Paula Young is where I buy too. I've noticed that if I wait long enough, the wigs I want usually go on sale. Your mileage may vary. But they do have a return policy if you don't remove the tags, so if you don't like it, just return it. So far, I've bought 3 and have been satisfied with all of them.

About 5 years ago, when I was buying wigs (good ones, finally), I just went into a wig shop and told the lady what I wanted, something to frame my face and to extend abut 6" below my shoulders. I asked for something to match my hair color. I said I wanted to send about $50.

She suddenly got interested in making the sale, knowing I was going to buy. She helped me select a good one, to put it on, and even taught me how to properly wear and store it.

I went in the middle of a week day, no customers were in the shop. She even asked me to come back anytime.

ATTITUDE!

GRIN - I hope this helps. It's best when you can try things on.

Chanelle, the advice regarding on-line stores is spot on. I don't have experience with them myself, but I've heard of others here getting good quality merchandise, and a wide selection.

But since you live in So. Calif., if you have a little courage and want to try a brick and mortar store, I highly recommend Hollywood Wigs,

at 6530 Hollywood Blvd, near Schrader Blvd. I've gotten two wigs there, and was very satisfied with both. The young proprietor (try to

talk to her as opposed to the middle aged owner) is wonderful, totally non-judgmental, helpful and professional. I went the first time in

male mode, and she treated me with total respect and care, and helped me pick just the right wig for my face and coloration.

The older woman is OK, but her English skills are not that great and she can seem a little brusque, but she is actually quite nice, too.

I don't usually give recommendations like this, but I really do like this store. :)

Good luck.

Buying wigs online could turn out to be hit and miss. A wig could look great in a photo online but when framed with your face not be a good match. In my city I ended up contacting a lady who sells brand name wigs and styles for people going chemotherapy. She also has another business outside the cancer clinic. I called her up, explained I had gender identity issues I was dealing with and the wig was for me. I explained the style and colors I was interested in too. When I went to the appointment I was able to try 12 to 15 wigs. The wig that I thought would look great didn't. If I had bought that on the web I would have been stuck with it. I also had the added advantage of buying wig shampoo and conditioner and a sheet for info on caring for the wig. For me the one on one and hands on trying before buying worked best for me. I hope this helps you.

My hair is way longer than the $50 wig I was writing about, and coincidentally, I tried it on a week or two ago. I was able to get it looking good - and you can work around getting your real hair put up - with a liberal use of bobby pins. I would not worry about that unless you have extremely heavy hair, in which case why would you need a wig?

A short hair wig: Dee Jay can help you with that. Her natural hippy length hair fits under her medium length wig.

I spent about $60 for the first one, Chanelle. It was very good quality, but not great. The second (the one in my avatar) cost around $120, and even though it's synthetic, it feels and looks like real hair, even with strands of different colors, like highlights. It is well worth the extra money, and I'm complimented on it often.

Chanelle,

Just call ahead, explain that you're transgender and wonder if they'll help you get a wig that flatters you. Tell them your budget and ask them if that's enough to get a wig.

Most of these places will try them on you for no charge. I'd never buy one online (done it before) because the wigs all look totally different on your head. Finding the right one is easy this way. You'll know it when you see it.

Most wig shop owners and operators have worked with trans people before and are not at all shocked by it. You're a customer with money and trans people need wigs. This isn't that hard to figure out. :)

Using a phone first, you don't expose yourself to possible ridicule and it allows you to set an appointment with someone that you know will help you. I've done a lot of "calling ahead" in the past and always tell them I want them to be comfortable and if they're not, I'll go quietly to the next business.

Best of luck, this can be a very exciting experience.

Great advice on going in person instead of buying online, you can try before you buy and they can give you advise as to if the wig is the right style and color for you. I bought a couple wigs online, one is a human hair wig that i paid quite a bit of money for, when it arrived it was lighter and longer than the online picture showed, it was not the right look for my age and thus did not wear it but around the house, my own hair is long enough now so i do not really need it, i recently took it to the woman that does my hair and she colored it and cut it into a style that looks good on me, so now i have another look when i feel like it, bobby pins will hold the wig in place as long as you have some hair to pin it to.

Om my gosh, no, they didn't charge extra. I tried on 5-6 at least, and they didn't mind at all. It seemed important to them to get me the right one. She helped comb each one after I put it on, and gave me good advice as to color and length and shape. They have many longer styles, and can also special order from a catalog. It really is a nice shop, Chanelle. It wouldn't hurt to call ahead, like Becky suggested,

but I don't think its necessary. If you want their full attention, I suggest to go early in the day.

Good advice. I would have wigs when I was dressing - way before my transitioning. but I wasn't wearing them out in public so I never bought expensive ones. I did finally buy a nice wig - and at the time it was $50 (ten or fifteen years ago). I really liked it.

So the amount you spend should be at LEAST that much, I was suggesting.

I can't comment on wigs for full-time because I - whatever reason - have thick and full female-type hair - like that of a 35 or 40 year old woman. Genetics I guess, no balding or thinning. kinda rare for someone age 63. And the HRT isn't hurting as my widows peak came back.

BUT - having a good wig showed me what I wanted when my hair grew out. The photos now, and earlier with the wig - are very similar. FUN - lucky I guess.

First off, you can't regret being honest. You may not be changing the relationship, but it sounds like it still exists!   As for meeting people, what about through the volunteering you're doing? Maybe you can do more of that and meet people. Let some relationships grow and if they blossom into something more than friendship, great! If not, you've got more friends!

Hi Giz, welcome. There's so many different ways to be trans and you're so welcome here. I wish you luck in achieving your goal of being more androgynous. There's forums in here that might suit you and your goals. I look forward to hearing more from you. I go by he/they pronouns at the mo.

Hello @JenniferB!  Was kind of in the same boat with this.  I spent massive amounts of energy over several decades to try to control my drinking and drug use.  Because I'm highly disciplined, I was ultimately successful.  I felt I could have gone on with controlled drinking for the rest of my life without problems, but it got to the point where I realized that it wasn't worth all the energy I was putting into it.  At that point I found surrender.  I got a sponsor, attended almost daily meetings for a year, worked the steps to the best of my ability, tried my best to socialize with people even though I am an introvert, I made a mess for myself at the meetings and felt a little rejected.  And then I continued on doing a little service work.   After a few months away from it, I'm in a good spot.  I accidentally ate one of my roommates edibles a couple months ago.  I have only smoked a half ounce of weed in the last 20 years.  After it kicked in, I realized that it was a marijuana high.  Then I noticed something miraculous.  I just told myself that there is nothing I can do about it and then got on with the business of the evening like I normally would.  It was like the high just ended right then and there.   Controlled drinking like I was doing was just very risky behavior and not worth the effort for me.  In any case, I'm very happy that I spent my life fighting it all instead of just giving into it.  I think that whatever you put into something, you eventually get back out.   Meetings are cool.  People generally get equal time to share.  Seeing people who are struggling reminds me of the way I was and why I want to remain sober.  And by being there, I have the potential of helping someone else.  The stuff I don't identify with I just do my best to not let bother me.  And if it gets bad there, I don't have to go back.  I can find another meeting or even just read the literature.  The literature helped me a lot.

Good afternoon everyone,   I often wondered why @April Marie and @Willowgot up so early in spite of being retired. Now that I have my own puppy as a house pet I get it. We haven't had dogs since before my oldest granddaughter was born 22 years ago this September. I've always had working hunting dogs, and it was important they became acclimated to the current weather conditions. While the kennels had large outdoor runways, they also had pet passes into the somewhat temperature controlled garage. Yes, they were allowed in the house but only for short periods of time. Fast forward to present time, and I'm potty training a puppy as well as crate training. The first night Parker Von Schwinegruber, slept from 10:30 until 05:30. Last night we went to bed and 10:30 and he started making noise at 05:00. Since I don't want to test his ability to hold his business, we got up and went outside. He took care of business and we went back to sleep. This time he had a dental chew bar and I filled his water bowl. We cat napped until 08:00 and then got up for the day taking him immediately outside. He took care of business, and we played fetch and tug of war with his now favorite puffball. We came in and I put him back in the crate positioned so he could see me cook breakfast. Did he NO HE WENT TO SLEEP! We ate breakfast, did the dishes, and finished off the pot of coffee I brewed at 08:00. Once he woke up we stared at one another for about 20 minutes, because he seemed content to be in the crate. I got up and we worked on some obedience training as well as getting into and out of the crate with permission. We don't want him to crash the gate or any doors we will be going through.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I have not heard about it here in California, but then again we have events of various sorts going on very often, and not just in the June Pride Month.  We have Trans Fashion Week going on at a hotel complex over in West Los Angeles for the next three nights featuring shows by Trans fashion designers and modeled by Trans and NB people on the runways there.  I missed a chance for some free tickets and while I know and love many of the participants I do not want to pay for the tickets which will be in the $50 to $75 range, and which at those prices are nearly sold out.  (Not to mention $25 valet parking each night at the venue complex.).  There will be actual high end fashion buyers there though and it is an area where we are gaining some good footing.  I also admit that NONE of the fashions are going to be anything at all that would fit my basic personal style but look fine if not crazy on my much younger Trans siblings who will model them. (Ok everyone else keep on @Mirrabooka's topic.)

Welcome to TransPulseForums @gizgizgizzie    I hope you find this place as helpful as I do. I’m also in a slow transition living in the androgynous world. I’m out to my grown children and my extended family with mixed support from them. Some have cut me out of their lives and others want me to be their flamboyant family member.    Best wishes, stay positive and motivated    Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Accidents happen.  So do heat-of-the-moment murders, without premeditation or trans-related hate.  It will take a trial to really figure it out.     One thing we can see from this is that it is people in our circles of acquaintances, friends, and partners who are the ones who usually hurt us.  Not someone random. We have to be careful who we trust.
