Boy In A Scramble Suit

[Flint]

She walks, she talks

She sees, she tells

She lives, she breathes

But it’s just a scramble suit

With a boy within

A boy with his own childhood

Never seen

Identity unknown

Little boy inside all alone

He sees out but never is heard

He breathes, he writhes

He lives, he cries

He blinks, he knows

He reaches out

But with her hand

So they hold his/her hand

Smile and tell how beautiful they are

But they’re talking to the girl

Not the boy inside the scramble suit

And the boy inside screams a muffled scream

“I’m me. Can’t you see? I’m just a boy! A boy who wants to be seen

Hello? Can anyone hear me?”

But he talks through the girl’s mouth

The scramble suit starts to change

Boy inside also begins to change

His mind don’t match his scramble suit

His scramble suit goes one way, he goes the other

His mind going through all a teenage boy does

His body going through all a teenage girls does

And inside he loses all sense of identity

Loses his mind and depressions seeks

Out the best of him

Still unheard, still unseen

He feels himself die but doesn’t want to go

Without being reached

He must remain alive to be revealed

So he goes on trying to find a way

To be himself, to grow into the man

He was always meant to be

What’s so wrong about making his outside

Match what he feels inside?

The suits a man wears to set an example and image

The earrings someone wears, tattoos that symbolise something about their identity

The way you style your hair, the glasses you wear

The books you buy and the ones you put out on display with pride

Showing your intellect

All example of showing a sense of identity from the inside out

Let the boy in the scramble suit free. Lets bring him to life.

I haven't read the book A Scanner Darkly but saw the movie, and I think the scramble suit is a good metaphor for your gender not matching your body. I've been feeling strongly this way (not aligned, masculine individual with a woman's facade, scrambled) for the past six months, and your poem just hit this feeling exactly.

The book is great. The move is great. But I prefer the book.
