A Funny Question

Yesterday I came out to a member of my staff, a first line supervisor. We were talking today about my situation and she related a conversation she had with her husband the night before.

She had in the past told him that I was a good boss, who had good traits, that she enjoyed working with me, and felt comfortable around me. They talked over my big announcement, and when she was finished telling her husband about me becoming a woman, he asked her this question:

"So after he becomes a woman, is she going to be a (insert pejorative term for female dog)?"

:lol::lol:

After we laughed for about two solid minutes, I told her to assure her husband that I didn't anticipate turning into a shrew. I was changing genders, not personalities. :D

I'm going to get serious here for just a moment without changing this thread. I do contract work, and that has meant going into a lot of different situations and working with and for different people, and to date, I have had managers in my career all over the spectrum, and I can tell you, in shear numbers, I have seen in 40 years no difference between the sexes. People are what they are, how they've lived, the experiences they've had.

I worked for a great woman manager, her immediate mgmt team were women, and I was the only male, and we had a great relationship. The trick as an employee is actually listening and then giving well thought out opinions and suggestions - when asked. Be polite and deferential to the position, and most of all, do your job. If the manager is still either an offspring of a dog, or a female dog, it's not because of the gender.

btw, absolute best manager I worked for was a male, and the worst manager I worked for was a male. (oh, and that worst manager was directly responsible for me getting to work for the best one, even though he tried his worst to keep that from happening)

Life lesson #23.

I had the misfortune to work for three really bad managers during my career.

All bull headed males who would take my ideas or accomplishments and take full

credit for my work. And at the same time I was told by more than one of my employee's

that I was the best manager they ever worked for.I was caring, compassionate, put the

family before the job,and was willing to listen if one of them had an idea that was

a better way to get a job done more efficeintly, and was willing to give credit where

credit was due.Years later one of my therapists told me that was the female mind that

made it so that I could be so open, expressive, and willing to listen.Huh,who knew.

Uh, what's a "shrew"?

1. A scolding woman; nag :o

2. A small, mouselike mammal with a long, sharp snout. :P

You choose, DJ.

Carolyn,

Too bad your staff member couldn't quip back, "No she isn't going to turn into (a female dog)because Honey, she works with me, not you."

I would have put on a big smile and said "Yep!"

Then we'd all share a laugh knowing I was kidding.

...or was I? lol
