Law And Order Svu - Transitions

I have been watching the entire set of SVU episodes from season 1 on and just came across this one that I had never seen before. It is available on Hulu if anyone wants to see it. The thing that is different about this episode is that it is fully centered on an MtF teenager and her relationship with her mom and dad. The crime, her dad being beat up, is almost a side issue to what the story is really about. The writers have done a very good job of airing out many of the issues we face and those of our loved ones too. Definitely worth a watch. (It has a happy ending too)

Janice,

SVU is one of my favorite shows and of the entire Law and Order shows, it's my favorite. I don't think I have watched this one. Thanks for the hulu tip.

Was that the episode where it turned out the female principal was also a former transsexual?

The other SVU episode that handled some of the issues relatively well was the one with Kate Moennig (Shane from The L Word) as a pre-op who was charged in a matter that followed being outed. She then got mishandled by a grandstanding attorney who wanted to use her as a cause instead of taking a plea that was in the client's best interest.

I just finished watching this episode. I thought it was great. I also realized they used a story from another transgenders case with the nail clippers and trying to remove the downstairs mix up. Anyways I love how they show the issues we deal with, and actually somethings that happen to us. I feel like people need to see this to even get a glimpse of what trans go through. And in someway it has made me personally think about what I am going to go through for the next few years in my life with school because I am going full time for 10th grade +. Except I am not violent... Well great show anyone reading this might have to google svu episodes because most sites wanted you to have a membership to watch. Yeah if you havent watched it, watch it.

Law and Order SVU is the best show on tv. It has always handled tg issues very fairly, although if youre looking for something that paints us all as angels, who never do anything wrong, that's probably some kind of fantasty show. The episode youre talking about, Ann, is an absolute must see. It was a horrifying, but dead-on view of how people who are tg can be used by other people for their own agenda. Wish I could remember the name.

I was not happy to read that Mariska will not be around as much. Everytime they feel they need to add some new lead, it bombs. Stabler and Benson have that undeniable chemistry. They messed with the original L & O and look what happened.

Mariska is my babe! What is not to like about an intelliegent, strong, sexy and compassionate woman?

I also really like SVU and Mariska Hargitay, but I've watched enough tv over the years, that regardless of how endearing the lead is, and how enjoyable the show is, even the actors eventually get tired of it and want to take a break, or explore other options (David Caruso really lucked out there!). Just like a number of us do here - take a break, that is, tho we hope we'll luck out occasionally).

I thought Betty White as SueAnn Nivens was a very interesting character, but much as I hated MTM show being cancelled (it was probably time, tho to me it was probably the best traditional sit-com ever, think of where practically every single character wound up! like 6 of them? puts the Seinfield 3 to shame), it allowed her to go to Golden Girls where she really became the glue for that show. You just sit and watch and wait for some off the wall response.

So, yeah, I'll miss her, but life goes on. But what I'll really miss in that show is how they do a much better job of portraying people and issues more so than L&O ever did, where Jack McCoy was ALWAYS on the side of the angels. Olivia and Stabler certainly have their human frailities, don't they, they acted like real people in real situations. Makes for great drama.

Chloe,

While I agree with everything you wrote in your post, certain leads are irreplaceable and Mariska is one of them. I know actors move on and try new things. What I have a problem is when the creator of the show/producers decided to mess with what is working. There is only one Detective Benson and one Mariska.

When she was on maternity leave, the show was still good but it missed something. I rarely feel this strongly. David Duchovny irritates me as an actor and I certainly did not feel about him the way I do about Mariska but he was Mulder and when he left, X Files was not the same.

I do agree that Law and Order SVU uses their main cast to present all sides of a situation and thy have human sides that make them endearing and real. Also, they have done shows that focus on more than just the leads.

LOL John you made Cariad's day by talking about SVU AND xfiles in the same post!

I love SVU but I haven't seen that episode Janice. Thank you for telling us about that, I'm gonna go look it up to watch now. I saw the one with Kate Moennig in though which I think was done well and brought up some good issues.

You are one lucky man! Cariad has excellent taste in men and TV shows. And she cooks awesome meals. But she is not getting my Xena or Scully tshirts and Mariska is still mine! LOL

John, if the violinist serenading at your table seems a little dubious and keeps knocking things over and stuff you may want to check Cariad's not sneakily trying to steal your date there :P

Janice,

You should go surprise him. He is sitting over across the street at the diner drinking coffee alone now that Mariska is occupied.

P.S. Janice, if I don't get any work done tonight, guess what? You started the whole Mariska thing, then I started thinking about Scully, and Xena, and Seven of Nine! Anyone have a cold beer? I need it ;)

Oh dear, did you have to mention Seven of Nine? Now you've gone and done it. My mind is fixed on one of the best wardrobes on television. Excuse me, I'm going to visit with Elliot and get my mind off of Seven of Nine's clothes.

Yes, go visit with Elliot. I am taking Mariska for a carriage ride on cobblestone streets on a clear moonlit night.

happy trans birthday! I can't speak personally on the subject, but I hope hormones bring you the changes you're looking for <3

That’s super healthy, to see that something that becomes common has less effect on you and that you are able to decipher these feelings.   Sadly, this trend tends to only deaden good feelings as we tend not to let bad feelings attenuate the same way.   I have noticed less euphoria, but still feel the dysphorias that I have. Sometimes the good sneaks in and reminds me, but often time it’s just me seeing myself in the mirror and being comfortable about what I see when embracing my realized self. I may not get the same buzz I once did, but I don’t feel incongruous when looking at a more “drab” reflection.    Wishing you strength, you are amazing!

Congratulations! and Happy Trans Birthday @LittleSam! That is such a BIG milestone.  I can still remember walking out of my clinic with my first HRT presciption.  I was on Cloud-9.  Wishing you all the best in the start of your new Journey!

    • MaeBe
Meet him at the being good to others part of Christianity. At the heart of it, there are excellent tenets of the faith. Those that condemn are judging, Jesus would have us be selfless; stone casting and all that. Are you a good person? Are you putting good into the world? If your gender is an issue for God, let God judge. In the mortal realm, let your actions be heard.

Let’s stick to cite-able fact. Most of my posts have been directly in relation to LGBTQ+ rights as it pertains to P2025 and I have drawn direct links between people, their quotes, and their agenda. I have made reference to the cronyism that P2025 would entail as well, by gutting, not cutting, broad swathes of government and replacing it with “conservative warriors” (I can get you the direct quote, but rest assured it’s a quote). All this does is constantly force the cogs to be refitted, not their movement. To say that agencies have directly defied a President is a bit much, the EPA did what Trump told them to do at the direct harm to the environment, the department of agriculture did the same by enacting the administrations forced move to KC which decimated the USDA.      How about Betsy DeVoss for Education? Or Bannon for anything? What about the revolving Chief of Staff position that Trump couldn’t stay filled? Or the Postmaster General, who did much to make the USPS worse?   Let’s not mix politics with racism, sexism, or any other ism. Because Trump made mainly white, male, appointments—many of them not, arguably, people fit for service—or unwilling to commit to term. I can argue this because, again, he’s up for election and will do what he did before (and more of the same, his words).   Please delineate how the selected diversity appointments have negatively affected the US, other than being black, women, or queer? Representation matters and America benefits when its people are inspired and empowered.

When I first started figuring things out, I got a lot more euphoria. Every time a friend would use he/they pronouns for me, I'd get this bubbly feeling, and seeing myself look masculine made me really happy. Dysphoric state felt more normal, so I guess I noticed the pain it caused me less.   Now, it's more just that my pronouns and such things feel natural, and dysphoria is a lot stronger -- I know what's natural, so experiencing the opposite is more jarring than everything. The problem is, most of my natural experiences are from friends, and I rarely get properly gendered by strangers, much less by my family. I've found myself unable to bind in months due to aches, colds,, and not wanting to risk damage.    It partially makes me want to go back to the beginning of my journey, because at least then I got full euphoria. I'm pretty sure it'll be like this until I medically transition, or at the very least get top surgery (you know all those trans dudes online with tiny chests? Not me, unfortunately). It's a bit depressing, but at least I know that, eventually, there's a way out of this.

Major mood, right here ^^^    I've listened to Lumineers to a long time (a major portion of it by osmosis via my mom), so that is almost painfully relatable
    • RaineOnYourParade
As for getting a button-up/formal pants suit, you can try to talk to her more -- Cis women in tuxes have worn tuxes in recent years, after all, (for example, Zendaya) so it can still be a relatively safe topic. For jumpsuits, I'd recommend going with a simple one with a blazer, if you can -- this'll make it look overall more masculine. There's a lot of good brands, but going for one without a lot of extra glitz on it will make it look less feminine under a blazer. I don't know many specific brands though since I usually just get my stuff from chain stores, sorry :<   When it comes to your hair, if you can't cut it, you can look up tutorials on fluffing it up instead. If you can pull it off, it can look a lot shorter and more androgynous instead!
