Hello, Im Blue. ive been thinking about coming out as trans for over two years before i did 8 months ago. i get IDd as male half the time, but i was wondering if anyone had tips on how to look more male. im very short, under 5', and extremely thin, which makes it harder. But in general i have an androgynous face. if its okay with a mod id like to post a picture of my face or something to help?

thank you.

Hmm, being male for 21 years I could scrounge some tips. I don't know what you do or don't do.

Try relaxing your posture, slouch a little bit.

Wear baggier clothing, as in not form fitting.

Use more aggressive and direct mannerisms and speech.

Wear clothes that are neutral. White, Black, Gray, etc. Most colors should be apart of some kind of graphic on T-shirts. Other than that

you have blue jeans, really.

Don't change yourself. People tend to notice when you force an attitude or interest. Just be yourself. ^_^

These are just a few of the things I have experienced.

Hello Blue,

Welcome to Laura's Playground. :) Sure, it's ok to post a picture as long as it's within the forum guidelines.

I really have no idea any more as to how to present as male more often. I thought I came up with a whole massive list of tips but when I do those things I'm still seen as female so, I'm doubting if they work. lol

Hey Blue, I'm hoping I learn something from this thread too. I pretty much always get read as female but I'm just beginning to learn to just be comfortable in myself and I can't expect everyone else to see me as a guy until I can be comfortable in projecting that. I've realised that I've been so desperate to have the confirmation of someone saying 'he' about me and what I need to do is go out there knowing who I am whether other people know or not and that is more likely to get people to see me just by my confidence in myself coming through to them.

You look pretty male in your picture. Maybe the clothes aren't so male...the picture on the t-shirt would seem to be more a female style to me.

The thing we can't tell from a picture is how you move and talk and stuff.

KieranD~ haha you can share the tips anyways! i have some tips, but i guess they dont work either?

CariadsCarrot~ oooh yeah it takes some time to be ready for that XD Thank you for saying that i look male though, i really appreciate it. haha yeah i actually dont normally wear shirts like that unless im too lazy to get another one. I usually feel that my face is the thing that gives me away half the time XD i have a round face and big eyes and a small nose...bleh!

From what I see in the pic, I would gender you as female based on the tee, hoodie and earring. The face and hair-cut seems neutral to me, so the wearables tip the scale. Not sure what type of earring you are wearing in the pic, but maybe consider a simple ring in dark metal?

Well hey there! Nice to see a fellow FA member on here *fistbump*

Anyhow, the best thing you can do is clothing and posture/body language. I like guys clothes a lot, though I do have to pull myself away from the brighter-colored stuff a lot. Neutral colors look best, though my love of electric blue does win out sometimes lol. As far as body language goes, basically loosen up- but not enough to look like a slob. Lean back a bit when you sit, try not to cross your legs a lot, hands in the pockets instead of crossed or on your hips. Just little stuff like that can go towards the whole image. Watch how guys move and act, and try out things your own way that are comfortable for you.

Hope that helps, I ramble sometimes.

I look fairly masculine, but my voice usually gives me away. I've been working on it and I know I'm at least being read as "possibly not woman" because here in the South everyone still says "sir" or "ma'am" or "miss" and when I don't get *any* of those in a conversation I know it's because the person doesn't know which one to pick. Hey, it's better than nothing and definitely better than hearing "ma'am."

You have the advantage of youth on your side. When I was a teen-ager/early 20s it was easy to pass because both sexes are still a little androgynous at those stages. It's not uncommon to see teen boys/very young men with rounded faces or smallish stature. When you hit your 30s and 40s, it's different. Men my age have rougher skin so their wrinkles show and the aging process has made their bone structure more prominent. They don't have soft reddish lips, etc.

Things that get me read as male before I speak and destroy the illusion:

Male clothing that isn't overly baggy, but not skin tight either.

Taking up space when I sit, stand, and move.

Being deliberate in my actions instead of moving into situations gently like many women do.

Not walking around with a big smile on my face for everyone; men make eye contact, give nods of the head in acknowledgment, but they don't flash a big toothy grin at everyone they see.

As I've gotten older, steering away from trendy clothes and hair styles. Again, when you're younger, it's not uncommon for males and females to be more conscious of fashion; men my age tend not to deviate too much from standard off-the-rack clothing.

I forgot to add that my guy mode usually gets shattered to bits when one of my kids yells "Hey, Mom!" (Small children always correct my youngest and tell him "that's your Daddy." We shall both be therapy together.)

Hah, I don't go anywhere with my teenager until he stops using "mom". <.< He's slowly making a switch I think though, at least he'll now use my name when adressing me on facebook. That's something I guess. :P

A few months back I'd often hear strangers refer to me as she (i.e. at the store "She was before me"), but now I seem to be in the "can't tell"-phase myself, as noone seems to use gendered terms about me. Going in the right direction fer sure.

a few comments for you -

Like others have said, you're not bad off in terms of build or facial structure, so it's more a matter of things that are easier to change, like clothing and hair. Dressing a bit more traditionally/conservatively (like buttoned shirts) could help a fair amount, but I don't know if that's your style. Similarly, I'd lose the earring. One thing to keep in mind is that for someone of your height, how you wear your hair is going to have a big part in how someone reads your age - you might want to try a haircut that's more traditionally seen on older men. You definitely don't want to have any sort of fringe.

This is just my opinion though, everyone has their own style.

KieranD~ haha you can share the tips anyways! i have some tips, but i guess they dont work either?

Well there's general tips like layer clothing depending on body shape. If you have a chest, of course bind your chest then layer with an A-frame muscle shirt, t-shirt, button down shirt and open vest or blazer. Stuff like that tends to hide curves and falls a bit better (although you need to consider what works for your body and your environment). If you're stretching your ears and want to go bigger getting to around a 0g and using a flesh tunnel might look better than the pinchers you have in (at least it looks like a pincher). The hair could change but I know a lot of guys used to (don't know many who still do) spike up the back using gel and smooth down the front. The cut is the same or similar to what you have, but with the back spiked and the front straightened and flattened more.

You look like a young teen in this picture, and if that's your age or the kind of places that you hang out (meaning not bars or college campuses) then you should be read as male fairly easily. I think you look like a person who would wear jeans and a t-shirt, so if I were in your position I wouldn't go for something conservative or mature looking. Dress the age you look.

Hi Sally, okay I'll head on over to your post and check out your makeup techniques.

Hey all,   It's been a while, but I blogged a whole series on makeup.  It's an eight-part series where I talk about my techniques.   Here is the link to Part 1:       Hopefully the blog series is helpful.

Oh, I can relate to that one Vicky, leaving lipstick in hot weather  I've lost count how many times I had to purchase new purses.

Thanks for the replies, as an admin from my own group I understand the same rules, agreed.

I do spoken word acting, and give Trans 101 talks and other public speaking.  I wear make-up for those occasions.  Sephora is easy for me to get to, and has a foundation that does a good job for me and the sales folks there are Trans Friendly.  Their eye shadow pallets are also fun to use. Another source of my foundation is Ulta which carries Dermablend that does a consistent job of my lower face and chin.   I just use good old Revlon lipsticks because I ruin them by leaving my purse in the hot car too often.

I'm not interested in makeup, jewelry or nice clothes or girly stuff.  It's made me wonder at times.   It saves some money.  If I wore a skirt it would likely  be denim.  I thought about a woman's skirt suit but nah.   Neither of my sisters are into that stuff either.  One likes peasant chic (still a 60s flower girl)  and the other - the only time she has ever worn a dress was at her wedding.  Jeans at all other times.   Jeans and t shirt here.  Content being a girl.  Weirdo. Weirda? Never mind.

@Ladypcnj Before posting links to other group's websites, PM one of the Staff (preferably an Admin) and have them check that site out.   We have specific rules here regarding age appropriateness and would need to know that the other site is in line with those rules.  We do have members here between 13 and 18 and other sites need to be safe for that age range, legally and otherwise.  Also, we are not a dating or pick-up site, not do we allow people selling things to advertise here.  As I said clear the link with a moderator or admin before posting it.  Mod's and admins do check out posts and if we find problem links we will remove them and notify the OP of a rules violation.  Go to https://www.transgenderpulse.com/community-rules to understand where we are.

I raise my hand in the group, I have a question and a suggestion... is it allowed to share other new lgbtq+ website links here?
    • Ladypcnj
Yeah, ELF is a good brand, another brand is Revlon ColorStay last 24 hours.

I really don't think that's a good idea. The unity of the LGB and T community is historic and has been central for both groups rights. And the vast majority of people advocating for splitting the two are transphobic LGB's who are broadly condemned by the community anyway.
