Alley Cat

A tattered mane and open scars

Though small and sickly, fearsome still

With eyes not dead but not alive

An undead gaze with envy filled.

Your alley runs between two homes

One unsightly, worn, and old.

Its iron fence you helped construct:

You fled its masters, dull and cold.

The other seems a paradise,

Its ivory walls not firmly set,

Its Cerberus an ancient hound

With forgotten purpose standing yet.

Each outstretched hand's a scalding flame.

A cage, at times, would seem as free.

With pride preserving loneliness,

Choked yowls mourn what will never be.
