Gender Therapist

Hi everyone!

I had my first gender therapist appointment on Thursday. He is a nationally-renowned guy who's written a bunch of books and papers on FtMs and transexuals. Thing is, he told me to come back in 3 months 'cos i've been having panic attacks ('cos of gender issues) and that i should work that stuff out. He also told me to keep seeing my regular shrink (a freudian 70-year old guy who didn't believe i was a lesbian until i brought my girlfriend in and made out with her in front of him).

So, i'm confused and don't know what to do or where to go. I mean, the regular shrink is good for non-gender stuff, but if i have to see him for gender issues, i probably will never get anywhere.

Help?

Cheers,

Kasey

You need to get rid of BOTH. My counselor is great - they are out there - Hopefully someone who is from Conn will have some names of counselors to try - Otherwise, check the links here for counseling services and try another one. You are the consumer - if you don't click - try again. You NEVER EVER should be placed into a position of having to make out in front of the counselor to prove a point - You might even want to consider reporting that little event. Hang in there - lots of support here.

That made me laugh hard. He doesn't sound like a good therapist if he won't even believe something so simple that you tell him at face value. Drop him like a sack of rocks. I've had my fair share of bad therapists in my teen years.

No doubt. I can only second every thing thats been said here . Get rid of BOTH. Start over.Your regular shrink should be someone who after you talk to them you feel "better", motivated even. And when I saw my gender one earlier in the week heck I felt so good afterwards I dang near wanted to start a thread just to say so :P These are people who are supposed to be a serious "plus" in your world.

Eek. I don't think I'd be keen to talk to a freudian psychologist about my gender issues... didn't Freud consider crossdressing and transgender feelings to be nothing more than a denial of homosexuality? o.O

get rid of both shrinks! they sound kinda out of it. panic attacks are no reason to postpone dealing with gender issues, i've had panic attacks since i was 13 and actually dealing with things seems to help.

I can't agree more with what everyone else has said - get rid of them BOTH. Its hard enough to go through this when you have support - the last thing you need is a therapist (or 2) that don't support you. Go with your gut, you are right when you say you won't get anywhere - dump them and move on.

I agree with everybody, they both sound pretty rubbish. Even if your shrink is generally good, if he can't understand something that's a big part of you..then he's signifcantly limited in how he can help you overall.
