I have a question. Why do younger women call their friends guys and older women call their friends girls?

Generation gap. Probably calling other women guys is a terminology that slowly crept into the cultural vocabulary and older women are not comfortable or prefer not to call other women guys. I recall that in the U.K. that women wouldn't call other women guys yet in the U.S. they did. Perhaps things have changed there too!

I say girls, seeing as the large percentage of my friends are mtf or girls I ain't about to call one guy lol.

"You guys" is in the vernacular....

We (Sally, Julie and I ) were at a restaurant and were obviously were not "guys!

Waiter called us that and it irked me,.....but, it's what happens...

Few reasons.

It's a misogynistic country/world. Everything is fireMAN and congressMAN, etc. Jello isn't always Jello brand and guys arent always male.

The younger you are the more casual you act. People in Congress were always the Distinguished Gentleman from X which isn't used as often. And not just cause they're all a lower class of politician.

I'm (relatively) young, and I often use "guys" when I am talking to a group of people, regardless of their gender. Granted, most my friends are cis-gendered males, but I've even heard my younger sister use it in reference to a group of only cis-gendered females.

In the South, we often say 'Y'all' instead of 'you guys' as was the custom when I lived in the North and Midwest...

It isn't just an age thing, it is a cultural and geographic thang, too....
