Transgender = Bicentennial Man

Tonight, i was watching the film "Bicentennial Man".

well when i watching the film, it suddenly dawned on me, (don't know if it is just me), that it is kinda like being transgender on it. That the character "Andrew", (played by Robin Williams), wants to be human.

Andrew startes off as a Robot, (like we start of as male or female), and eventually during the film andrew desparately wants to become human, (as we want to become the opposite gender). Andrew starts by making modifications and upgrades, (like us with HRT and SRS).

Personally i can relate to the film, in a way that i know how he feels as he is percieved as a robot, (me bring male), and during the film still being percieved as a robot even when the changes are being made, then at the end he eventually gets the wish of becoming and excepted as a human.

I cried through the film. I was happy for andrew with the path he had choosen and was estatic that he eventually got excepted as the person that he say himself as.

(apologies if you dont understand, my heads up the left and i am crap at explaining things, but if yo have seen the film and remember it, try to put the film and Andrew in the context of yourself, with the changes and all.).

Natascha, I not only understand, I agree with you 100 percent. This movie and its connection to us has been brought up before, but its nice to see it talked about again.

The movie is beautifully made and acted, and is, in my view, one of Robin Williams' greatest performances. He gives great depth, empathy and compassion to the role. I doubt anyone could fail to be moved. The ending brings me to tears, too.

While I never realy thought about this movie this way. It has been a favorite of mine since I first seen it. Most people I know hate this movie and I just can not figure out why. The acting was very good and storyline was nice.

I like Robin Williams and I liked the movie, but the written story affected me even more. All Andrew wants is to actually be what he feels he is inside. And eventually, he succeeds both privately and societally, becoming fully accepted legally as his long held desire. He could have easily remained a very human appearing android 'living' almost indefinitely. But he wanted to actually live so badly that he willingly embraced death.

As I grow older and start facing my own mortality, I'm asking myself, what am I and what do I want to be at my death. What is the real me?
