Metamorphosis II

It seems like almost a lifetime ago when I wrote a poem to a dear friend

But in reality it was just over three years and that friendship did not end

When Lizzy had started her HRT and I was still struggling against my fears

I saw her going forward leaving me behind afraid and alone with my tears

As I fought my inner demons trying for approval from all those who would not understand

The greatest gift that anyone could give waiting for me the warmth of an outstretched hand

When I found myself with my first pill in my hand sitting so all alone

I had the good fortune of a timely call from Miss Lizzy on my phone

My true friend had not flown away she had but moved ahead

Circling above not abandoning but rather guiding me instead

This episode has been repeated from time to time as we might be discouraged

Whether Lizzy or myself helping each other when what we needed was courage

And now with Donna Jean we get to help to the power of three

When the fates threaten together we can withstand and be free

The New Orleans Belles facing the world together and never alone

So what could possibly threaten to change this lovely happy home

Three tiny little letters SRS that into my very soul seem to burn

It lies ahead for my friends and something for which I still yearn

The fear that somehow things will change between we three

This time I have to realize not to underestimate them or me

Our friendship has lasted through our leapfrogging transitions

As each has taken a step ahead or stalled reversing positions

The love and caring shared by we three makes this change less scary

When they return from the surgery all we share will keep us merry

Sisters still with friendships beyond all bounds

Living in the home that only love surrounds
