Very upset about newspaper article

Hi everyone,

I've had a great weekend, until this morning. Before getting ready for Church I read the Sunday paper. An insert is a magazine about all the great places in our city. One neighborhood in particular is very beautiful and generally accepting, in fact that is where my church is located. Anyway, the article that described that neighborhood had the following sentence: "sure you'll run into the occasional transvestite or panhandler, but that's a small price to pay..".

Beside using a very offensive term for TG people, it puts us in a class with panhandlers and considers our presence to be "a small price to pay".

It hurts, a lot. I really thought that times were changing and now I'm not so sure.

Thankfully times are changing for the better, albeit slowly, some places a little slower than others. Sounds like the author of the article was a bit on the slow side themselves. A letter to the publisher of the paper may not do any good in the short run, but especially since this appears to be an advertising piece, remind them that Transgendered folks do SPEND MONEY too.

The writer of that article was insensitive and ignorant. I hope the newspaper publisher will address it with the writer. They have to be brought up to the 21st century. Although different areas evolve at different paces, in some places that comment is considered discriminatory and illegal.

Is there a online edition to complain to. not relate to this but i have been telling guys to grow up about the miss canada pagent online. the more we get volcal the more they will start thinking its wrong to act that way.

Its a pity that the visitors to your beautiful city will run into panhandlers and the occasional bigot. Unfortunately they exist in every town. I doubt we will ever cure either the poverty of the body or the mind. Hopefully it's still a beautiful City where you can be beautiful and for the most part undisturbed.

It wasn't an advertising insert, it was a city magazine. The article was written by a newspaper staff writer.

He's got an editor and a publisher that need to be clued in with some mail!! How else is he gonna learn about his obnoxious behavior other than being on the street doing the panhandling? (IE fired) Only problem I see is that his editor let it slide, so the editor needs to join him on the unemployment line. We can dream.

You do make it sound like its a "chamber of commerce" piece which is not news to the residents. I get those things here, and a friend in the real estate business gets them by the gross as give aways for sales clients. None the less, the goof needs to be made aware of his errors.
