Some Thoughts on Dr. Brassard Before I Go Home

I stayed one night in the outpatient center then went to a hotel the next morning. I saw the doctor once a day for the next 3 days and then I went home. I live about an hour away from the doctor and because I'm close, he let me go. Usually the girls stay for seven days.

Recovering in the hotel was nice. My own room, bathroom, fridge, microwave, etc... I had the docs number on speed dial if I needed him, which I did not. I was allowed to rest and recover with minimal interuptions. No rules, no meals at certain times.

I had explosive diarrhea for 5 days post op so my recovery was really uncomfortable because I has to keep getting up to go. The sink of course was right there so I was able to wash up after each occurrence and head back to bed semi clean. I had help most of the time, but I did spend a bit of time alone.

I'm happy that someone agrees with my thought that the negative reviews on Dr. Brassard are from very specific people with bad experiences that are outside of his control. One specific one that caught my eye was someone that had freaked out the day before the operation because she didn't want to go through with it and wanted out... but she had a panick attack, was sedated and pushed through the surgery anyways. And then there was pain and discomfort which was most likely the same as everyone gets but multiplied by the realization that they had made the wrong choice.

For anyone coming up here in Montreal (I live here, I'm literally 20 minutes away from the clinic.), I hope you have the time to come early and enjoy the sights. There are a couple of interesting places to visit, such as the Olympic Stadium and Biodome, the Old Port, Mount Royal, etc... Hey, if you let me know in advance, perhaps I can show you around (before surgery, as it would be pretty uncomfortable to drive around after :P) and bring you to the best Poutine place in Montreal, La Banquise. It's a little ways from the clinic but it's worth it :D

My GT works with Dr Brassard on a regular basis, and mentioned that his clinic is the only private clinic in Canada approved for reimbursement by provincial healthcare plans. That would be a very good sign, from my perspective, as our public healthcare system is not generally willing to allow anything private to get in the way.

I came across that story too and I was extremely skeptical that this had happened the way she reported. From the reports I read (and she was very vocal all over the web) it sounded like she was literally being wheeled into surgery when she changed her mind. From what I remember of my own surgery day, the story seems all the more unlikely. Not only is the whole day pretty foggy but a person could easily mistake thoughts they were having as words they were actually saying. There are numerous reasons why the surgery might be stopped at the point she described. Since half of the money is unrefundable by that point, I can hardly believe someone is pushed through against their will (and all the legal ramifications of that) for the other half. The clinic makes quite a lot of money as it is.

The story sounds like an unbalanced patient rather than something on Dr. Brassard's end. While I was AT the clinic, one patient got into a really bad argument with one of the nurses and it escalated to the point where the police had to be called. One of the other staff mentioned that something like that happens about once every two months. At an average of 6-8 surgeries a week times about 9 weeks, that is about less than 2%, although still more common than I would've thought. A friend who had surgery a different time mentioned she'd witnessed a similar incident.

The sad fact is that some people get surgery when they're not ready and then try to blame the doctor afterwards.

Now I did come across some other bad stories about Dr. Brassard that seemed more legitimate and they were repeated enough times on different sites to make it seem like these things were very common. I don't believe they are, however, and besides, people are much more likely to report bad experiences than good. But if you want a good Brassard story, just ask me :) Things seem perfect so far!

Ashley,

I'm so glad you had a great experience as I did. Ultimately, it's the final product that matters most, but it's nice to be able to say you would recommend your surgeon to others. I have no hesitation recommending Dr. Brassard as none of the many people I spoke with prior to traveling there did. There is nothing like perfection in the world and there will always be those who are not happy or have problems. It happens and, frankly, I'm glad it did not happen to me. There were some folks who complained when I was there, but none too vocally and not about anything that the staff didn't do their best to handle. I, personally, hated the pillows they gave us. The worst pillows ever, really. But like I said, it really comes down to the operation and the results and everything down there seems to work properly and look good, even though it is still swollen. I can't wait to see the final results.

Keep resting and dilating! You're almost down to three times a day and the introduction of Mr. Green. He's a nice fellow, actually. I prefer him to Mr. Lavender. I get to stop sitz baths on Tuesday :D

xoxo

LOL! You're still a couple of months away from Mr. Orange. Right now, all I call him is the end of my midday dilation which means that I'm looking forward to calling him into service.

hi vidanjali !! i know exactly what you mean, i do have a few trans and otherwise queer friends nearby me but currently i present as 'cis' for obvious reasons so it's not all that easy for me to reach out and find that kind of community (though i do love my irls!!)   but yeah, i get this weird paranoia that if i come out to too many people it'll end up tracing back to my folks (not everyone knows my family is homophobic and being outed is a big fear of mine)   but im sooo happy to know that that feeling was just dysphoria !! i thought i was going crazy for a minute !!.   thanks so much for welcoming me, and you have a great day too !!

hi susan!! thats very much how i feel !! i have no issue explaining my gender or educating other people on transness but it feels like im talking to a brick wall of misinformation even if they are well-meaning and accepting people ! but thank you anyways for welcoming me here !!

This is a fairly long video by Philosophy Tube,  (Abigail Thorne)  Discussing some of Judith Buttler's work and related stuff.   I wasn't sure where to post it, so if there is a better place, move it.

I have a fantastic therapist. She is so caring she has helped me open up so much. Unfortunately, She is ending her internship. Do to a hiring freeze at the VA she isn't going just go right into a position there.  My Endo is out of the Denver VA hospital. I haven't talked with her in probably 2 yrs. I am  looking to transfer providers and get back to seeing a GYN at the Cheyenne VA.

Shopping at the mall today and helping out at Torrid I excused myself to the restroom. The manager told me the restroom at JC Penny was much closer (I normally use the family restroom in the food court).   Upon arrival I discovered that JC Penny doesn't have a family restroom, it's either or.   The men's room was occupied with customers, and me going in with large breasts, long hair, and makeup was going to cause a stir, so I opted for the woman's room instead. I was the only one in the woman's room.    Texas state law does state that your must use the restroom that matches your chromosomes, and it's a misdemeanor to not do so, but it seemed to be the best choice (I really needed to go!)

I had some guy grab my butt on the ship.  I don't know how "real" it was, but I did not enjoy that at all.  Also did not enjoy the hazing I saw other people going through.  One person can only do so much to stop that when there are 10 people doing it.

I pulled this out of a stack of old military mementos yesterday.  I guess I didn't realize how cool this one was because I did so much of this kind of thing back then.

This internet video thing is pretty amazing.  I'd call it Zoom, but there are other platforms out there.  I prefer Zoom over Teams because Zoom puts me and everyone else in the same picture.  I like seeing the whole group in one shot.  Teams of course is about having so many people that you can't get them in the shot, or is it?   Just saying that I have never met any of my counselors in person.  Doctors, of course I have and I am lucky there.  They are 3.5 miles from my house as is the main transgender surgery place in town.  I've been doing virtual visits with the medical doctors lately though.  It feels like once I became steady state, they don't need to interact with me physically that much.  I have enjoyed going into their office in my nice clothing.
