D-Day - Hard Won American Rights

I just read a book called The Lacunda by Barbara Kingsolver (2009) . It's about a lot of things - sort of a Forrest Gump type of journey, but in the 1930's through the 1950s. It talks about America after the WWII experience and especially the McCarthy Communist Witch hunts (the protagonist gets sucked into all that and pretty much destroyed). But the point is it also paints a picture of how Americans thought about the USA after the war. It was a heady time - before the Red Menace thing took over (my childhood times)

What I am thinking about is how those men in the D-Day invasion were fighting for that ideal, the America without all the 'evils' that were inherent in the enemy's' version of how the world should be.

The Allies won. It was a heady time - and we still share that heritage.

But in my opinion? It's fading.

I think back on all that our fathers and grandfathers fought against, and how the current political situation of RIGHT NOW seemingly imitates so much if the cup cake and Fascist beliefs - people asking for the placing of LGBT in concentration camps until they die out, the deportation of alien peoples, the turning back of women's rights (especially the rights to women's heath care) the degradation of the working man by eliminating the 40 hour work week (and therefore all benefits), promotion of the ruling monied class over 99% of us, and especially one group (so called Fundamental Christians) trying to take control of the 'morality' of America - all that. ALL THAT!

I get frightened.

Be on guard, people - ALWAYS on guard, against those who would take back all that so many Americans have fought and died for.
