Have you played WoW? (world of warcraft) After a free trial there is a small subscription as well as buying the game but they leave your account as it is just frozen in between if you decide not to pay to play it some months.

I'm addicted...especially since they're bringing out a new expansion soon with a new race that look like panda's. They also have several beautiful and several tough looking charactor choices in 2 factions (hoard and alliance) and you can choose whether to play PVP (where hoard and alliance players can attack each other) or PVE (where you are only fighting against the computer generated characters). And you can make certain style choices to your character like their hair style and colour as well as male or female.

You work your way up the levels both by doing quests and killing increasingly difficult things and earn game currency to buy in game items like better armour, pets, food and stuff like that. There are also dungeons you go in as groups with other players and work together to get rewards and in world events when you can get special items.

There are also 'guilds' which are like groups you can make or join (each character can be in one guild at any time and can leave and join different ones as they want) where people can work together and/or chat while playing.

There are hundreds I think of different realms (like parallel worlds that the characters can't travel or trade between) and you can have up to about 6 or 8 characters (I'm not sure without looking and I've actually never counted lol) on one realm but more if you spread them over different realms...but if you get bored of one and you're up to your limit you can delete and make new ones as many times as you like. Most people train up one or more to a high level and keep them just getting better and better stuff until you get to the point where everyone looks at you and knows you're an awesome player just by what you've got.

It's a pretty elaborate, well thought out game world with a lot of story background world history and stuff if you're into learning about it (although you don't have to in order to play) and they keep developing it so if you buy new expansions or making new characters you can play for a long time and not get bored.

Does that sound like your sort of thing?

I recently gave Tera a go on their 7 day free trial:

http://tera.enmasse.com/

The game is absolutely beautiful, however it comes with a few drawbacks. Graphics and such need a strong computer to run and it's sometimes difficult to find someone that speaks English. Actually, it's difficult to find anyone that speaks, period. Also your characters looks really don't change all that much with gear. Seems there's only a handful of art models that were made.

Still, it's a lot of fun and gorgeous environments. Classes are interesting, animations are great, and character customization is decent. Music is fantastic and I just can't say enough about how beautiful the world is.

Other than that, I enjoy a few other online RPG's. EvE, Wizard 101, FreeRealms, SWTOR, and Star Trek Online. Of course not all at once, I just switch from one to another now and then when one loses interest.
