What Is Your favorite Sci Fi Flick?

Guest Chrysee

The new movie "Looper" totally blew me away, and is definitely up there in my list of favorite sci-fi flicks. Otherwise, I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi films, but the Matrix and RoboCop have always been some of my favorites as a youth (a younger youth :P )

The Thing: I'm in the minority here, I like both versions equally.

Gattaca, deals with a theme of human condition very well.

Chad Vader Dayshift Manager (LOL), StarWars is not sci-fi. It's a fairy tale,

so what if it has lasers and spaceships in it? Chad Vader is more sci-fi than SW,

because it at least deals with a concept. That being Darth Vader being placed into

everyday life.

Also, I absolutely despise Brazil. The most overrated movie ever.

P.S.: really, there aren't that many good sci-fi films. If you want really good

sci-fi you should turn to literature. Stanislaw Lem and his The Cyberiad are

the best examples of the genre, imho.

The two different versions of The Thing show so well what Hollywood and the entire film industry is becoming.

In the first version the thing was never really seen except in quick glimpses and shadows pretty much until the end of the movie - suspense was generated and sustained without the need for any graphic blood baths - such atrocities being committed by the thing are only described and your imagination is engaged.

The second version, while much closer to the 1938 novella, 'Who Goes There?" by John W Campbell, does not rely on your imagination as it does a series of incredible special effects which I like to label as a special genre Technogore.

Everything is thrown at you - no imagination - even in Alien which had its share of Technogore, Scott relied on the old school for building suspense - the alien was seen only in glimpses until later in the film about when the suspense started to slip away and get into just fast paced and mostly Flashing light and steam dashing about.

I sort of miss the old days when your imagination played a larger role in watching a sci-fi movie than is required now.

Love ya,

Sally

Well, I've watched the "prequel" and the original

both in the same day. I must say that the original didn't

age well in terms of story. It just has too much nonsense

with plot holes being the size of the Sun.

Technically it's still a superior version, in the terms of suspense too.

However as the story goes the second one clearly wins out.

The ending is just brilliant, in my opinion.

Sure the CGI is cheesy and it goes a little too fast at times,

but who cares if it has a good story.

I do agree with you though, subtlety is no longer Hollywood's way.

Wow, I have been a huge sci-fi geek forever, so listing all of them would take way too long. I suppose I could list a few though.

Star Wars (All of them including the clone wars series)

Serenity (and firefly series)

TRON and TRON: Legacy

The Avengers (and the other movies tied to it)

Red VS. Blue

Like I said, there are several more that I love, but not enough time or space to list them all right now :P

What great Sci Fi movie is this quote from?

[Mr.Radar has just been "jammed" with raspberry.] There's only one man who would dare give me the raspberry: [pulls down helmet as camera zooms in on his face] Lone Starr! [camera slams into his face and knocks him out]

Hmm, a lot of similar thoughts up here-

Blade runner, The Wrath of Khan, Aliens, Alien, The Empire Strikes Back, why not a plug for District 9 too<-(which surely isn't concluded.)

Dr.Fronkonstein always counts.

I think you're mistaking Dr. Frankensteen with Count von Count. :D

Watching "Son Of Frankenstein" right now. Why don't people dress to the nines anymore? Else put their son to bed and she was wearing a beautiful fur coat and hat. Not that I'd wear a fur EVER but she sure looked beautiful. They don't make em like they used to, that's for sure.

I'm planning to buy myself a faux fur jacket after spending money on everyone else for the holidays. I shall try not to think about how many 'fauxs' had had to die to make it!

In the Blake Edwards movie 'Switch' (talk about a divine intervention sex change!) a character on the streets of New York in a fur coat is asked: "Do you know how many animals had to die to make that coat?" to which she replies--and I'm paraphrasing for proprieties sake:"Do you know how many animals I had to (become familiar with) to get it?"

I think we are tuned into different stations here Alex_Di.

Maybe I miss-read.

"Young Frankenstein" is a monochrome aka. Black & White Mel Brooks 1974 movie with Gene Wilder et al.

Having taken on the site, forums, and all of the bills, from Dev (May 2020) and because I also want to be fully transparent about the cost of running the site, I feel it's time to update this information. Sorry that it has taken me two years since I last gave an update, just life getting in the way.   If you'd like to donate, please do so via the green bar at the top of the forum pages.  The months of July through October are pretty heavy with annual and semi-annual expenses and every little bit helps.   Here's the breakdown as it stands now:   Chat is now free. (Stu now runs the Chat)   Regular Charges: There are occasional one off's as well. Forums:  $70.00 every six months (February and August, effectively billed in January and July). (Was $45 until 2022, support ticket system depreciated!) Resource Locator:  $53.00 yearly, this "widget" failed this year, so I have been able to find a (currently) free replacement. Resource Locator Mapping: Google maps, currently under the minimum monthly usage, so free. Email Delivery: $5.00 monthly currently free, changed to a service that offers a much larger monthly allowance. Server Rental:  $30.00 monthly. Greatfully sponsored by The Breast Form Store. Security Software:  Now included in the package we have. Domain Renewals: Approx $75 annual charges for Transgenderpulse.com, Lauras-playground.com and the server domain. Contact Us Form Software: $79 yearly (August).   Total Monthly Breakdown: $54.50 per month.  (Annual bills = $654) Updated May 2024 (Slightly down on previous years).   Now then.  I'm on a fixed income, which means I know what it's like not having a penny to spare.  If you're not in a position to donate, please don't feel guilty; I didn't take over here to turn a profit.  The lights will stay on.  Donations are very much appreciated, but they are not a requirement of membership.   An update to clarify a couple of points: Because you have to use your legal name with PayPal, emails confirming your donation from PayPal will be from a name with the initials "DS", not Petra Jane and the email used is tgp (at) uk-web***   Unfortunately, we can only accept payment through PayPal, and please ensure that you have permission to make any donation through a PayPal account, we have been stung by someone alledgedly using a PayPal account without the owner's permission and incurred an additional $20 chargeback to refund the donation!   We have recently seen a number of these of late so I am asking that genuine donators please add your forum username in the comment box so that I, and I alone, will know who has sent the donation and that it is genuine. Thank you. Also, this appears only to Members who are logged in on the forums, New Members need to have made a minimum of 10 posts.   Let me reassure you: Donations help towards ongoing costs related to keeping the site running, including hosting, bandwidth, etc. It also encourages us to commit regular updates, add features, and improve the service. Our promise to you is that this site and its use will always remain free of charge.     Petra Jane

This is the dress I'll be wearing this evening while we watch the Kentucky Derby. Not sure if I'll throw on heels or flats with it - probably flats but I haven't worn heels in a while and the Force is strong.
