Successful Trip Home

So, I got back from my week-long trip to see my family and extended family a couple of days ago. I'm really exhausted from it and a little sick, but otherwise no worse for the wear. Mostly, they decided to just not engage me on the subject of my transition. It was kinda weird because they let me participate in the male sphere of the family, but they still called me "she". They mostly used my initials to talk to me rather than using my name or the dreaded birthname. I really didn't like being called by my initials... it just didn't suit me. I didn't want to start huge arguments about it, though, so I mostly just sucked it up and gritted my teeth a lot. I tried to focus on the fact that they were at least trying a little bit to accept my transition and to be grateful for that much. Hopefully, with each successive trip, they will become more comfortable with me as male. The next time I will see them is in July for my sister's wedding.

Congratulations Mike!

Not on the feeling sick part!

But on the baby steps with the family - they are coming along and they did avoid the birth name!

In JUly they may be around to using he and maybe, keep your fingers crossed your 'real name'!

I have been waitin to hear how it went. I'm glad you're back and fine. And I gotta tell you , all things considered I think they did good. There was the "shock" aspect, cuz they hadn't seen you in 8months (wasn't it?) and that whole "Christmas sock thing" but however much stunnedness there was there was acceptatance that "you're a guy" cuz they put ya in the other group. Baby steps for the the family, they are a-workin'. They're tryin to catch up to you. Plus they're still "feeling" and finding their place in relationship. Good work :) Sounds like it went well.

:P Keep up your sense of humor on this sweetheart. LAUGH about it all - they didn't shun ya t'all, really - takes folks awhile to get the pronouns right sometimes. At least calling you by your initials is a step. As you get a bit older and seem mature to them, they will WANT your respect, and will probably do better by you.

'sides - their problem not yours - you DEFINATELY know who you are - right???

Congrats on a semi-sucessful trip - and how'd you get sick? Not contageous over the computer is it??? Gosh, wonder if I need to dip this keyboa..... zizzzzzzit

hee hee

I'm so glad everything went well (sorta)! I've been wondering how it went. Not too talkative the past week or so, but I just wanted to say that. :)

Ditto to what everyone said.

I've got to hand it to you. My Christmas sounded very similar to yours, but I only had to suck it up for a day, not a whole week. I look at it this way. Every small step they do for you is probably a really big step for them.

congrats Mike! them not calling you your birth name is a pretty big thing....most of my family still does.

i'm sorry you got sick though, sucks to be sick over the holidays...i can attest to that.

Glad to hear your visit went okay. Family is always difficult. My family is still being "weird". They don't know I've had top surgery yet (with the exception of my sister). Using the right pronouns is FAR beyond my family right now. I spend most of my time with family gritting my teeth and trying not to start fights.

You are right though. It think they'll get more comfortable with you as male with each successive visit.

About your sister's wedding, will that be your first major family event since you started transition? My sister's getting married in August. That'll be my first family event since I started transitioning. I'm a bit anxious.

Hey guys.

thanks for the responses. I don't have internet access at home anymore, so I'm feeling a little cut off from the world.

Evan- I actually hadn't seen my family in 18 months, and then only for 4 days and I saw them for a week the year before that. I actually think that transitioning will make me fit better into my family in the long run, so that will be really interesting to see.

Ainsley- since my extended family is like 50 people and they all get together for Christmas, Christmas in and of itself is a "major family event" every year. My sister's wedding will be the first super formal family event where there are very clearly defined and inflexible gender roles that I will attend as a male, though, so that will be interesting. It helps that my physical transition has been really good - Pretty much as soon as I started T, there was absolutely no confusion as to the fact that I am male AND I don't have any visible scars from surgery, so I look very naturally male at that. I think physical part helps the family psychologically switch gears. I'm not super concerned about the wedding because I was pretty physically aggressive over the Christmas holiday and pretty much attached myself to my teenaged brothers, so I think that pretty much guarantees my slot in the male faction of the family for big events like that - even if they can't get pronouns straight.

Yeah, the insurance companies are like a minefield. They have many exclusions. Read the fine print. Although they will pay 60% out of network, that means they will only pay 60% of what the insurance company deems as the average cost they usually pay, not what you will pay the surgeon. Yeah, I know they claim that in those fancy looking benefit sheets when you sign up for the plan, but they have an awful record of paying. Some insurance companies like Kaiser Permanente have a lot of coverage for transgender individuals, and some do not.    I ran into the same thing you did, with my facial surgeries. I wound up not getting any reimbursement. It was a hard miserable event. It is not true that most of the good surgeons for trans surgeries do not submit to insurance. We are somewhat vulnerable in that a fair number of us have thought about this surgery for a long time. There was a time when no insurance companies paid a dime. They claimed all of this is cosmetic. Yes, there is a cottage industry based on us. We are vulnerable. I know a fair number of women on here have willingly paid the a lot of money for all types of procedures. That is how serious we are about this surgery. I have friends who have paid out of pocket to a variety of surgeons. I myself paid out of pocket for facial surgery. However, there are some really good surgeons out there associated with university hospitals who can do every bit as good as the surgeons in private practice.    The good news is that United Healthcare is accepted at several big centers with some really good surgeons. Rush University Hospital in Chicago has a wonderful surgeon, and an incredible gender affirming program. They have one of the best integrated programs in the country. Rush makes sure you have wall-to-wall care. Rush meets every one of the WPATH criteria for comprehensive transgender care. There are several other university hospitals with comprehensive programs. I failed to do my research and paid a fortune for my facial surgeries. I could have also had many of the procedures covered in network had I known about Rush, University of Colorado, or Mayo Clinic. Think it through. While there are a number of surgeons offering this surgery with what looks like less hoops, shorter waiting times, but you will pay out of pocket. Good luck with whatever you decide.

I completely understand the feeling. It’s much like watch a kettle come to boil. Looking back the changes were much like that boiling kettle…the less anticipation, the faster the results seem to have come or became noticeable to me. I do have to say that there was sort of an immediate placebo effect in just the fact that I knew I was finally making it real and that the process had begun. I was immediately at peace with my decision which up until that point I kept second guessing all the negative possibilities it might create. Almost 6 years in, I wouldn’t change my path in any way.   And a big congratulations for being able to make that leap toward authenticity. That is a huge milestone!   Best of luck on your journey, Susan R🌷

I'm not sure that's quite true.  If it was done by private entities?  Like most landfills here are privately owned, as are power plants.  I can't see a reason they couldn't be combined.    Right now, garbage companies in my area harvest the methane produced by the landfill to run their trucks.  The put all sorts of pipes in among the layers of the landfill to collect it.  Compressed natural gas (CNG) can be used with only minor modifications to existing engines, and many truck stops are adding CNG pumps as some fleets transition to it.    A fuel's usefulness is often measured in BTU's per gallon.  CNG has approximately the same BTUs as diesel or gasoline (138,000 or so.)  Pure ethanol and E85 have much less - like 76,000 BTUs.

Well, after a week on HRT, as many would probably have predicted, I've noticed exactly zero mental or physical changes. Patience appears to be the key here as hard as that will be after finally getting my transition moving. Guess I just need to sit back and enjoy the ride. Hope that my first blood tests after two months will show hormone levels moved acceptively.

A therapist appt is a great place to dress femme, If you want to!   It also sounds like a great safe venue to speak softer and more feminine, if that’s where you want to go.     Not sure the rules now.  But if you’re seeking HRT you might have to show them something to convince the money system that your case is medically necessary.  Obvious feminine clothes and mannerisms displayed by a human assigned male at birth (perhaps this is you?)  could be check marks towards them pushing your case through.     Please be whatever brings you love for who you are.   I have pursued this all the way through obstacles, mistakes, humiliation, and pain. And I  am so so so grateful  Hugs 😊 🌈🌈

Puzzled.  My United Healthcare Medical Advantage DOES cover gender affirming surgeries.  The HARD part is finding a surgeon that's in-network.  If the surgeon is out of network, the coverage is 40%/60% (they pay 60%).    Sadly, the surgeon I'd like to have, Dr Russell Sassani, in south Florida, is out-of-network and requires full payment prior to surgery.  I'm certain that there have been insurance issues for him and others, in the past.  Most GOOD surgeons for trans surgeries don't submit insurance, though they WILL help you with the codes, etc.  Actually, he does accept some regular insurance and original Medicare.     Anyway, I hope you were able to get your surgery or at least closer to being able to do so.

Welcome Madelyn, glad you are here and best wishes on your journey!!   I started HRT about two months ago... Had my initial appointment in December... Other than a bra underneath my clothes, I likely didn't look feminine at all ... I was nervous as heck but the doc put me at ease...   Just be yourself... do what feels comfortable for you ... The pace is up to you... Remember, you are one of a kind and have inestimable worth...    EasyE

I have been creating a space to be expressive. It's def not completed yet, I have loads of ideas still. Thinking about re-painting, maybe a light pastel purple or light pink, with a satin gloss. Honestly I'm hung on which would look best. Leave a comment if you think it would look better pink or purple. This area is a combination Man-Cave / She Shack. This is my sacred space, I think it's coming out well so far. I love this room, it inspires my creativity. Tho, I think there's not much man left in the cave lol.

Then there is how FDR is revered, and the ridiculous reluctance of the left to ever say anything negative about Biden.  It destroys their credibility.  Obsessed with Trump, they ignore how much worse Biden is.

The title of this thread is highly offensive.

Oh…. Now I get what the transgender agenda is.  I missed it.   I just didn't realize he was running again.   Silly me.   I'm going to quit now.  I've already been an ass
