time it takes to get SRS ?

A bit of prediction here. I have a feeling that there is going to be a general lowering of "quality" of SRS surgery no matter who the surgeon is.

The types of people having SRS, reasons and expectations have been changing. There seems to be higher expectations than ever hence my prediction is that the preceived quality will go down.

As I always say: One of the keys to a successful transition is realistic expectations.

I had my surgery with Dr. Mcginn, and though i did not get allot of depth due to me being diabetic and her not wanting to push the boundaries and physically my body could not get much more depth, i am satisfied with the results, i did not have high expectations going in, the end result is it is not a penis and looks good..

If you go in with high expectations, or don't follow the doctors orders for aftercare you may be disappointed, and thus the negative reviews, the doctors can only create so much depth depending on how much room and material there is to work with, it can take months for things to heal and the swelling to go down and start to look natural, if you expect that the doctor, any doctor is going to stop in every day and visit with you while you are in the hospital you will be disappointed, i saw Dr. Mcginn 4 times during my 5 day hospital stay once before surgery, once when i woke up from surgery and she said everything went fine, once when she removed the drains and once before i checked out, i did read some bad reviews but i doubt 3 out of 5 patients are not satisfied, all surgeons get bad reviews for one reason or another.

Dr. Mcginns told me many of her patients do not follow her orders, i assume the other surgeons have the same problem, the person who had her surgery the same day as me got out of bed against doctors orders and had a complication which required additional surgery because of bleeding, another she told me about was a younger woman who did not want to dilate, her mother called to see if Dr. Mcginn would call and talk to her.

My surgery date with Dr, Bowers is January 15, or 40 days from now. She does not completely use the Biber technique she was taught, but the ideas of what and how she will do seems that it will meet my MQ's (Minimum Qualities) for my life. At my age, the possibility of finding a partner able to use great depth, is not realistic, and as said before, its not sticking out any more is the big issue. Dr. B is a little abrasive, but was quick with a hug when I saw her for a brief consultation recently. So she is human. Dr. McGinn would have been fine, just a few more miles away than Dr. B. I also met and talked with her a year and a half ago, and it was a toss-up that the travel distance decided. I was turned down as a patient by Dr. Suporn because of my age and medical condition, plus, his scheduling assistant was a barking wonder to me who could not get his package of info to me. With Dr. Bower, I applied back in May 2012, and was originally scheduled for April 2013, but they called me a month ago and asked if I wanted the earlier date in January. I have had my finances in the bank for several months now as the result of an excellent credit rating and some real property ownership.

I am going to be satisfied because I do not expect to be a porn star or beauty pagent contestant, just an ordinary 65 year old woman. Being an SSC is not my real goal. (sexy senior citizen)

Suporn in Thailand has good and bad reports too. One patient of his, who had to have 2 revisions (first by Suporn and second by Bowers to finally get it right), said that when she went back for her first revision, she met more girls there for revisions than for initial SRS. What I've read about Suporn can be summed up in two essential ideas - first, he runs an SRS factory, just based on his surgery schedule alone, and second, if his work if good, it's very good, but if it's bad, it's horrible.

If you want to understand the differences in what Suporn does, Google "Chonburi Flap" and read the papers.

One woman elsewhere commented:

The plus side of suporn is that when it goes well it looks good and gives maximum depth.

The down side is that the recovery is a fair bit longer, there are about ten times more stitches involved, and when it goes wrong boy oh boy does it go wrong!

In essence it's like a high performance car. Fantastic when it works, but where as other surgeons go for reliability, suporn has gone for the absolute maximum possible performance, which means that you must be prepared for more discomfort in the healing phase and to be really careful to follow his postoperative care instructions to the letter.

A second aspect of Suporn's technique is his effort to reuse some of the corpora cavernosa tissue (male erectile tissue) to simulate the engorgement of the clitoris during arousal. Some women have serious issues with this when he uses too much, resulting in a clitoris that looks more like a stunted penis. But, as the woman I quoted above said, it's like a high performance sports car. Even knowing the potential downsides to Suporn's technique, based on so many other positive reviews, he remains on my list of surgeons to explore when my time comes.

I've also read negative comments about Meltzer, Brassard, Bowers, McGinn, and other well known surgeons. I can't believe that all of them totally suck at their work and I can't believe that all the positive reports are wrong too. Therefore I assume that, because this surgery is so very individual, and because some people do what their doctors tell them and some don't, and because even the surgeon's results will vary day to day, that it's simply part of the risk in choosing your surgeon. I suspect that 99 times out of 100 that if you are careful in selecting your surgeon, have realistic expectations, and stick to the regimen prescribed by your doctor for recovery after surgery that you will be fine.

I've also read that a significant number of "single stage" SRS patients still choose to have a labiaplasty later to make things look even better. Often, your surgeon will have prices for that to even encourage you to do so. I know that both Suporn and McGinn have reasonable prices for followup labiaplasty and I'd bet the others do too, when it's followup to their own work. Note that I already know that neither Suporn nor McGinn will discuss doing such a procedure until at least 3 months after initial SRS and preferable a bit more to allow time for healing.

Short answer - SRS has risks, SRS requires you to follow doctor's orders post-operatively, and you need to have realistic expectations.

I touched on this before relating to expectations being higher these days and as such perceptions of results will go downl The higher expections are obvious in how some talk about their upcomming surgery. It also seems to me that referrals for SRS are easier to come by with far less preparation and having dealt with issues in therapy.

Sometimes even with the best of preparations and intent, very often there can be expectations one doesn't realize they had.

That is only sensible. One should expect it could take up to 3 months for swelling to go down and revisions are best after everything has settled which can easily be 6 months.

If SRS is in my future i will probably go to Dr. McGinn. She is just 8 miles away from home and her office is supervising my HRT. The whole thing with surgery can be difficult. Unfortunately i had a lot of trouble when i had open heart surgery. I am a little gun-shy. I will also wait until i give HRT more time. I feel great as a woman and have about 6 months full time. The pink cloud is wearing off however and while i think i'm on the right path i want to move slowly now ad find out who i am as a woman and if i feel the need to be as complete as possible or can live in the half stage i'm in now. It does seem comfortable here and i'm content. Need more? i'm just not sure yet so i'll hang in. Its no longer fear or lies holding me back and that is great. I'm happy for Vicki moving up and having her surgery in a month. I may be there also but not for a bit. After all i waited 63 years to live as myself. What's the rush?

Hugs,

Charlie

4 years is outrageous. I am boiling just because I have to wait one year, haha. It is a very, very over-regulated surgery. Dr. Christine McGinn down in New Hope, Pennsylvania follows WPATH standards and only requires one year of both full-time and hormones, and 2 letters. :) I think I am going with her.

Very true but if you look at the reviews she has gotten on independent sites, her technique has caused plenty of problems but once you leave the clinic, instead of owning up to it the office turns everything back on you and refuses to offer any assistance. Oddly tho if you look at her site everything on there says that she is a freaking amazing surgeon....still not sure which is the best one to believe tho...just my .2 lol

That is very concerning. *)

Maybe.... Well, maybe her success rate is very good, but on rare occasions of a mishap, she doesn't own up to it? Could that be it?

Not from what i was reading...if I'm doing the math right its about 3 people saying this out of every 5 people. I was planning on going to see her until I read that because I live in Ohio, but now I'm debating between Meltzer and Supron....especially after seeing the results supron does....omg its like the Rolls or Lamborghini of srs surgery. He constantly provides depth of 7inches or more, full sensation, with rumors of even creating a G-spot, and results that are as close to identical as genetic as possible, hell to quote a friend "I can't even tell im looking at SRS results and I have had a vagina for 23 years" yeah he is that good lol.

Dr. Thawatchai at Yanhee is that good as well. That is where I went, after months and months of careful research and budgeting. I can't say there weren't hiccups along the way, because scheduling the surgery was confusing, but once I got past that and actually got there, it was just amazing.

Get yourselves to a TG convention as far as the U.S. folks go. The major U.S, Surgeons do go to the major ones and give infomercials and if there is time, personal consultations I met Chris McGinn, Sherman Leis and Marci Bowers at SCC conference and a friend matched up with them at Be All.

One of the biggest reasons for post surgery regret or angst is that the patient didn't go in with realistic expectations and did not follow the post care instructions the way they should have. Some of the post op personal care I have heard about that goes wrong, defies any stretch of imagination and often is the result of intoxication. Using adult toys instead of your medically issued dilation stents does ugly things down there, and it was not the doctors doing, so its fine that they deny a mistake on their part for a patient's lapse of good sense.

I will have a little rougher post healing time because of diabetes, but I know and accept that fact, and will work with it. I was turned down by Suporn because of the diabetes, since the healing issue would have compromised his artistry. I have not had scrotal sac electrolysis because the advantage of it is not on my radar. I will not be modeling my vagina to the medically correct art crowd, so a good job is better than a super perfect job that takes a full year to heal instead of the month the other jobs will take (in my case plus two weeks). A whole lot goes into planning it.

I waited 1 1/2 years. :|

I went to Doctor Pichet in Bangkok. Everything seems good so far a year and a half post-op, but then again I've only had one other friend go there.

hi vidanjali !! i know exactly what you mean, i do have a few trans and otherwise queer friends nearby me but currently i present as 'cis' for obvious reasons so it's not all that easy for me to reach out and find that kind of community (though i do love my irls!!)   but yeah, i get this weird paranoia that if i come out to too many people it'll end up tracing back to my folks (not everyone knows my family is homophobic and being outed is a big fear of mine)   but im sooo happy to know that that feeling was just dysphoria !! i thought i was going crazy for a minute !!.   thanks so much for welcoming me, and you have a great day too !!

hi susan!! thats very much how i feel !! i have no issue explaining my gender or educating other people on transness but it feels like im talking to a brick wall of misinformation even if they are well-meaning and accepting people ! but thank you anyways for welcoming me here !!

This is a fairly long video by Philosophy Tube,  (Abigail Thorne)  Discussing some of Judith Buttler's work and related stuff.   I wasn't sure where to post it, so if there is a better place, move it.

I have a fantastic therapist. She is so caring she has helped me open up so much. Unfortunately, She is ending her internship. Do to a hiring freeze at the VA she isn't going just go right into a position there.  My Endo is out of the Denver VA hospital. I haven't talked with her in probably 2 yrs. I am  looking to transfer providers and get back to seeing a GYN at the Cheyenne VA.

Shopping at the mall today and helping out at Torrid I excused myself to the restroom. The manager told me the restroom at JC Penny was much closer (I normally use the family restroom in the food court).   Upon arrival I discovered that JC Penny doesn't have a family restroom, it's either or.   The men's room was occupied with customers, and me going in with large breasts, long hair, and makeup was going to cause a stir, so I opted for the woman's room instead. I was the only one in the woman's room.    Texas state law does state that your must use the restroom that matches your chromosomes, and it's a misdemeanor to not do so, but it seemed to be the best choice (I really needed to go!)

I had some guy grab my butt on the ship.  I don't know how "real" it was, but I did not enjoy that at all.  Also did not enjoy the hazing I saw other people going through.  One person can only do so much to stop that when there are 10 people doing it.

This internet video thing is pretty amazing.  I'd call it Zoom, but there are other platforms out there.  I prefer Zoom over Teams because Zoom puts me and everyone else in the same picture.  I like seeing the whole group in one shot.  Teams of course is about having so many people that you can't get them in the shot, or is it?   Just saying that I have never met any of my counselors in person.  Doctors, of course I have and I am lucky there.  They are 3.5 miles from my house as is the main transgender surgery place in town.  I've been doing virtual visits with the medical doctors lately though.  It feels like once I became steady state, they don't need to interact with me physically that much.  I have enjoyed going into their office in my nice clothing.
