Long hair woes

Now don't get me wrong, I really do love my hair.

But, it's more of a love-hate relationship, and I'm not talking styling it, I'm referring to living with it. Once again let me state that I really do love my hair, however, it gets annoying at times and I was wondering if maybe there were some tips or tricks in dealing with it.

Once again, I really do love my hair most days. However I have found myself getting annoyed with it while wearing it down. If I'm not careful it will get in my food, on windy days it loves to blow across my face while I'm walking. Headbands sometimes help. Pulling half of it back to keep it mostly behind me and secured with a barette sometimes help. Other times I get annoyed by it and just pull it up in a messy bun. I've been doing that more frequently now. I used to opt for the pony tail but now I seem to be going for the more chic (versus sporty) messy bun.

Any tips or tricks on how to deal with wearing your hair down in every day life?

Thanks, ladies. :)

I have the same issues and my hair is just a bit longer than shoulder length. I don't usually wear my hair down Lizzie, but when I do I carry a tie around my wrist so if Im about to eat or something I can put it up quickly. That is really what I hate the most about having hair, if I'm not real careful I end up with it in my mouth!

Ahh, nothing like putting on lipstick only to have the wind blow your mouth full of hair. And then where does that lipstick go when you pull the hair out of your mouth?

Mine is too short to put in a bun, or a pony tail, just mouth length. But what it lacks in length, it makes up for in frizzy flyaway that is in my face a lot.

Ever since I saw Lana Wachowski with her pink dreadlocks at the HRC awards, I've been dreaming of dreadlocks. My poor stylist nearly had heart failure! But, a few beads would hold them right in place. Great idea, eh?

Good luck, Lizzie!

Love, Megan

My hair is long and thick similar to yours and it has its wild moments . I find having my hair layered helps keep things in better control . Is your hair layered ?

Ah, windy western states, and hair... Learn to self braid? I know you've stated you're not particularly femme, so not sure about the various bun styles might work for you. My sister totally went through a bun phase for years.

I carry a pony tail band on the handle of my in-purse hairbrush, and a spring clip on the handle of the purse. My hair is so fine that even clippped back, I find that I missed just enough of it, that it still ends up in my mouth. Some cute clip-in bows just above my temples do hold it just enough back to miss going IN my mouth, but tickle my cheeks.

psh coming from the windy city, this is a constant issue (daily) if you want it down and have wind resistance, aqua net. Lol!!! that will hold any style of hair.

Braiding will solve most of those problems. My hair is down to the middle my back and I usually go with a pony tail or a braid. There are plenty of youtube videos to help learn the fancier ones.

I know you've stated you're not particularly femme,

Only because I don't wear skirts and/or heels all the time, or makeup everyday, but other than that..I'm rather femme. In fact, I'm more femme than many of my cis friends who are truck drivers. I do sport a messy bun most days because I think it's cuter and more chic than a ponytail but there are times when I want to wear my hair down, like today for example.

However even with a headband I still had one moment where my hair was almost in my Fettuccine Alfredo. What I ended up doing was flipping my hair over to my left side and propped my left elbow on the table and hold my hair back out of my face that way while I ate. Not the most glamorous ways of eating but it did prevent Alfredo a la Lizzie. I also had to lean forward to prevent Fettuccine on Lizzie...

The perils of long hair and boobs. This wasn't covered in the girl manual....

Mine is long enough now to move to one shoulder and that helps when eating. I spend most of my days with a braid. Working out doors in Oregon I have to have it tamed somehow. I have also tried a scarf when driving and that helps a lot. Like every one so far I keep ties on my bag, in my bag, on my shifter, and usually one on my key fob too.

I like a messy bun too. Mine just seem to fall out all the time.

I'm actually thinking about bangs or layering next hair cut, would like to leave it down more often.

I'm thinking about doing the same thing actually when I make my first visit to a salon for my hair. It would look so much more feminine with bangs or layering! lol

Lizzie,

You and I have very different hair problems, while mine is slightly more than halfway down m back it is very, very, very fine.

I remember your hair as being so thick and full - must be easier to style having a bit of body, all of my friends who have curly hair ask me how I get mine so straight - no body what so ever, it just lies there waiting to attack me at the slightest hint of a breeze.

I just brush it back when outdoors - there is no way to face any direction and have the wind blow it out of your face, only into your face.

It is long enough now that when I eat I just pull it back behind my shoulders and even as I lean forward to avoid the attack of any foods that I might be trying to eat it stays behind me - unless dinning alfresco in which case the hair in your face rule applies (even with ponytails on a day like yesterday)

Love ya,

Sally

It shouldn't be a big problem while eating as long as you do not have two bowls of soup one on each side of your plate.

I've got curls, 50CM of them. They are impossible to handle. Better have straight hair. I have to wash it every day, otherwise it looks like an afro. One gush of wind and it's totally ruined. Cannot comb it, the comb will get stuck in the curls. Cannot wear hats because it ruins the curls, touch it and it's a mess instantly, can't run my fingers through it. It's always brittle and dry, hay-dry. Well, I guess it's different for everyone. But I agree it's a nuissance and takes much work.

Most annoying thing I have found with long hair is getting it sucked out the window in the car as im rolling it up

I.do have an assortment of ponytail holders hair clips and bobby pins. In the car I will make the ponytail come.off to the side so it works better with the head rest

That's almost what I do with my hair for bed time, so I don't wake up with a giant mass of tangles with my hair in the morning!

Well, I'll mention a few generalities from web-land that are not necessarily specific to this forum.   Here's some things that can possibly happen:  Disagree with somebody's policy and you just get silenced and eventually disappeared.  Stuff you write vanishes into thin air (and it ain't AI). Threads get shut down for not being "on topic" (a catch-all for when no other rule can be quoted and somebody with power just doesn't agree with you.)  Or if you have a disagreement with somebody (or a few somebodies), they get to mostly say whatever they want, but you get censored.  When it happens over and over again, it has the effect of eventually turning forums into echo chambers.  Some really good forums on the web have withered and vanished over the years because of this.  I have also noticed that the American portion of the internet is increasingly bifurcated, as each partisan side attempts greater control of their own turf.   Given that we're all humans, nobody will have the "absolute" answer to this stuff.  Only more questions, and plenty of philosophy.  I think that one way to measure the health of a forum is to see how acceptable it is to ask questions about policies and their enforcement.  Publicly.  And regarding specific instances as they occur, rather than generalities with specifics kept in the shadows.

Hi @Madelyn Rain - nice to meet you and Welcome!   To answer your question, when I first talked to my Dr about HRT I was in 'boy-mode" - partly because I was not socially out to anybody yet and was not dressing publicly. But my Dr was very accepting and understanding.  He knew I had been in gender therapy for a couple of years and this was likely the next step.  He noted my preferred name, and my gender pronouns (she/her).  He updated my records to indicate this and referred to me as she/her in my medical records. My experience was very positive and I hope yours is also.  Congratulations on your decision to start HRT. Deep breaths .. One step at a time

That's a truly inspirational story ... I love the focus of Zaya's mission - "The question was presented to her as, 'If you have one thing that you want to see change in this community, what would it be?'" Wade recalled. "And for her, it goes right to parents. It goes right to the adults. It goes right to us. It's not the kids. It's us."

I have two bags, both UNIQLO bags just different colors. I’ve become a bit of a shoe girl, though. My willpower and my tenuous employment situation has kept me from buying more though.

I try to avoid shopping until I drop, but my weaknesses are purses, I would have to be dragged out of the stores while still clinging onto the purse rack lol

I could not agree more or be more appreciative of this. As one who has come out to only a few people, here I can truly be myself with little fear of inadvertent exposure. Having that ability has helped me to find myself and to gain confidence in expressing my true self. It has helped me to love myself, something I could never do before.

I appreciate this so much and it's one of the reasons why this community feels like home - a rare treasure among the world wide web.

As far as things being lost on the Web, accidents happen, Just here alone, I have 20,825 posts showing in my number count, but probably only 19K of them are still actually here to view.  There was a change to a new server a number of years ago, and a segment of the data base they were in became locked and could not be transferred to the new drive in the servers we use now.  Why or how that segment of the data base became locked has not been figured out in the time since but at least we know what happened and it was not intentional or aimed at a single element of behavior here.  Data accidents happen with not one single person really responsible for them or for that matter even the computer itself.  Frustrating as all get out when it happens, but it does happen.  Some other electronics I work on as a hobby had their similar problems here a couple days ago because of the Solar Flares, and power outages or dips in voltage can make electronic life miserable.

This is very true, Jani.  The original owner of this site, Laura, and her chief assistants, developed our community rules more than 15 years ago.  They have been modified many times, to take into account changing tastes, mores, technical issues and legal issues.  Sites such as TikTok and X didn't exist then.  Our naughty word filter, as just one example, has been modified many, many times.   On this site, as on most private sites, in order to become a member one must agree to the T's & C's and abide by, in our case, the "Community Rules."  If you seriously violate those rules your membership can be terminated.  So, yes, freedom of speech here is restricted.  Some sites are lax about enforcement, but that has never been the case here.  We guard the safety of members, and your emotional comfort, zealously.  We aren't perfect and sometimes let things get out of hand, or we go too far with restrictions, but those instances are uncommon (IMO).   Every site has different standards.  Luckily, for every interest there are numerous sites and it's usually easy to find one that fits your needs and temperament.  When it comes to the Internet, one size does not fit all.   Thanks for your question, @Ladypcnj.   Carolyn Marie
