Secrets of Speaking with a Genuine Accent

http://www.omniglot.com/language/articles/accents.php

The author didn't intend for this to be male to female voice related but it can basically be reversed to male accents vs female accents.

I'm going to quote some of the parts I think are helpful:

Certain languages could be physically impossible for you to speak with a genuine accent due to some weak muscles of the mouth (which are never used to speak your mother tongue), but you can consciously develop certain muscles and breathing pattern to get very close to a native speaker.

Here is a quote that I took to heart because I used this last year when developing my own voice:

Observe how a native speaker speaks your own language. Chances are he/she will be speaking with an accent. This will leave you clues about how the native speaker uses his/her "vocal instruments", namely which part of the mouth he/she tends to use more, where he/she puts his tongue, how the air in his mouth is regulating, etc.

I think this is a key tip in understanding.

What hes saying is listen to the way females imitate the male voice. They sound muffled and as if they are eating something. This is how females talk but without the muffled effect. To me, it sounds like they are eating their words.

Example: (This a girl pretending to sound like a male who just got a sex change)

The way that 'Grace' is speaking in her male voice is the same way she speaks in her female voice. I had already come to the conclusion that women speak like this before seeing this video, but seeing it was confirmation that I was doing it right. Like I said in a previous post, it is hell trying to work out the muscles to produce speech like this. Even to sound like Graces unattractive male voice, that takes a while to accomplish. She does not sound like a convincing male because she has no clue how men breathe or how men produce sounds... so that was her best effort at producing a male voice using her female voice muscles.

I think the biggest downfall with a lot of people and their voice training is that they simply do not like their accents. Your accent as a male may have a huge impact on your accent as a female. Be honest with yourself.

If you have a New York male accent but do not want a New York female accent, then neutralize your male accent to sound clearer and enunciate your words more. The same applies to the stereotypical gay mans accent. Clarity and Enunciation compliments both the male and female voice, so its a win win. This is what I consider a neutral accent.
