summer gender-neutral clothes

For those who don't know I'm a MTF trans-sexual who recently found out about myself. I'm going to try to go on HRT soon but not wearing female style clothes yet IN PUBLIC. I want to gently cross over the gender line as far as apperance goes and gender-neutral clothes is the best start. Right now my attaire of black pants and black rock/metal shirt gives off the wrong impression that I'm a punk kid when actually Im kind, sensitive, and silly and some even called me cute. So what would some good gender-neutral clothes for summer be? Maybe some tips from others with past experience would be great too :-)

If you look carefully in both departments, you will see that a lot of shorts for one gender will go over fine to the other. Many women's shorts simply have the zipper on the opposite side of the men's, so buy the girls style and dollars to donuts, no one will give a doggone. Go over to a sporting wear type of site such as REI or Sport Chalet and compare the clothing for women and men, often they show the two genders together, and the major variation for the girls is going to be the colors. Tops that are more pastel denote female, but not always. Leave the tails of your favorite guy sport shirt out and an extra button at the collar undone and boy becomes girl. That should give you a start at least.

I wore women's jeans and cross trainers long before i came out, nobody noticed and if they did they didn't say anything, i work for a major discount clothing chain in receiving, many women's tee's are pretty gender neutral as are some shorts and many women's flip flops, we started seeing what looked like women's Capri's for men, you just need to use your own judgement as to how gender neutral or feminine you want to look.

I have to agree Paula. Women's jeans and tees are kinda neutral so that should be a good start. I've been wearing girls v neck tees to work which are obviously women's and no one has said a word to me. Granted I chose ones that are more on the girl side. Flip flops are gender neutral along with converse chuck Taylor shoes. I'm a huge Nike fan and have a bunch of pairs of bright colorful ones for men but they look very similar to the women's ones.

I haven't worn a thread of men's clothes in a long time. (Ok not entirely true, I still have a few men's shirts but they are purpley colors and I like them)

I work in a pseudo-industrial environment so jeans and t-shirts are the dress of the day. Women's jeans look very similar to men's unless they have fancy embroidery. (And I think they fit better) Women's shirts are pretty much the same unless you get really lacy or frilly ones. They just are cut differently.

And many brands of shoes sell unisex sizes: Vans, Converse, etc. Just don't get the sparkly pink ones. (I would get them, but I'm no longer trying to be stealthy :D )

You could always try going Scottish or Irish. Kilts may be a mans item, but it still looks like a skirt to me!

No offence intended to the Irish or Scottish though.

Google Utilikilt I have one and its better than shorts for a lot of our hot summer activities here in So. Cal. At the Highland Games and Music Festival here, there are bands that wear the kilts, and both genders look great. I won't tell you to skip the underwear if you have them on, but ---

I like to get my clothes at thrift stores. I always find women's clothes that are pretty gender neutral. In my case, I think some people look more closely at what I wear, but only because I shave my arms and hands and wear a woman's watch (albeit a black and silver sporty style one).

I'm in the early stages of coming out myself, so I try to keep it subtle. I like to wear spaghetti string tops. I wear them out and about, but I wear short sleeve linen shirts over them. If I'm in an adventurous mood, I'll leave it unbuttoned, if not I'll button it up and leave a little showing at the top. The shirts are tan or pastel in color. Works for now! That way I can be out wearing mostly female clothing and hardly anyone will notice. From there you can start pushing the gender line more to the feminine.

I like Rowyn's idea of wearing a lady's watch. Will try that myself!

Most womens clothes these days are unisex and even the frilly seem to be losing favor with women. The big box stores call them Basics. About the only thing that will set some people off are men in skirts. Even kilts will draw strange looks.

Overall I think womens clothes look and fit better and are much lighter for summer wear. One of my favorite tricks is to take an oversize shirt and knot it around the waist. Looks very girly and helps hide the male upper body.

I have not heard about it here in California, but then again we have events of various sorts going on very often, and not just in the June Pride Month.  We have Trans Fashion Week going on at a hotel complex over in West Los Angeles for the next three nights featuring shows by Trans fashion designers and modeled by Trans and NB people on the runways there.  I missed a chance for some free tickets and while I know and love many of the participants I do not want to pay for the tickets which will be in the $50 to $75 range, and which at those prices are nearly sold out.  (Not to mention $25 valet parking each night at the venue complex.).  There will be actual high end fashion buyers there though and it is an area where we are gaining some good footing.  I also admit that NONE of the fashions are going to be anything at all that would fit my basic personal style but look fine if not crazy on my much younger Trans siblings who will model them. (Ok everyone else keep on @Mirrabooka's topic.)

Welcome to TransPulseForums @gizgizgizzie    I hope you find this place as helpful as I do. I’m also in a slow transition living in the androgynous world. I’m out to my grown children and my extended family with mixed support from them. Some have cut me out of their lives and others want me to be their flamboyant family member.    Best wishes, stay positive and motivated    Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Accidents happen.  So do heat-of-the-moment murders, without premeditation or trans-related hate.  It will take a trial to really figure it out.     One thing we can see from this is that it is people in our circles of acquaintances, friends, and partners who are the ones who usually hurt us.  Not someone random. We have to be careful who we trust.

Friday May 17th is IDAHOBIT (International Day Against HOmophobia, BIphobia and Transphobia).   Do you acknowledge or celebrate it? Do you do anything special for it, like taking part in any organized events or activities?   I'm not an activist and I prefer to fly under the radar, but I am slowly becoming aware of important dates. I have been aware of the date of IDAHOBIT for a few weeks now, but other important 'rainbow' dates have not been etched into my brain yet.    I will wear my favorite pride t-shirt as a token acknowledgement of the day, but it probably won't be seen; cool weather here will mean that it will be hidden under a sweater.

Happiness for me comes from being cognizant of the things that make me feel good.   Sunshine.   Pandering to my inner woman.   Knowing that some people in my life really 'know' me.   Vacations, and Eggs Benedict at an alfresco cafe.   My wife and I being telepathic.   Grandchildren.   Music.   Wine!
    • Ivy
True.  Every trans death is not a hate crime. There is so much hate expressed by some people, that we kinda get to expect it.

happiness to me is being ME. At all times, and it has yet to happen.

Hello & welcome, giz! Your post makes me remember how excited I was to join here too. I also had queer friends at the time I joined, but any of my trans friends lived a long distance away. So most local queer friends are gay & I felt uncomfortable coming out to them bc I couldn't assume they'd understand genderqueerness. So it was a thrill to join here and immediately have access to do many wonderful, genuine, kind & thoughtful friends-to-be.   Are you saying you're concerned that if you come out to your queer friends that somehow your parents will find out?     My love, I just want to affirm that that's not a weird dysphoria. It's just dysphoria. And we definitely get it. You're in good company here!     Look forward to seeing you around here & getting to know you. I shoot for androgynous appearance as well, leaning towards masculine.   Hope you're having a splendid day!

Listening to a YouTube mix for me and this song came up and I immediately fell in love again and just want to play music with like minded musicians playing OUR music and feel the joy and fulfillment even if no one else gets it. I love to fall into the music....
