HRT and possible side-effect concerns

Hello I am a MTF trans-sexual and am about to start HRT possibly in two months. I was reading up on hormone side-effects online and two particulars caught my eye. The first one says sterilitity is possible. I never heard of that happening to a male before; is that actually possible? I don't plan to have kids anytime soon but thats a little weird. The next one wasn't mention on the list of side-effects but I heard of it happening before is incontinence. That one does scare me. It isn't vey common is it? They said it was caused by the hormone they were taking.

Hi Natalie,

Before starting HRT your Endocrinologist will explain some of the effects.

Most Endo's, if not all, will also have you sign an "Informed Consent Form" stating that they explained the possible results from HRT.

Some effects are reversible if you stop, but many are not.

Being sterile and also not being able to get an erection are some effects from HRT.

In addition, penile shrinkage and testes shrinkage are also effects of MtF HRT.

If for some reason that you think you may want children in the future, you may look into having your sperm saved for the future.

If you have more concerns, I strongly feel you should discuss it with your Endo before starting HRT.

Hugs,

Carla

Hi Natalie;

I hadn't heard of hormones causing incontinence so I can't help you there. All the research that I've read thus far doesn't mention that condition as a side effect. However, with respect to sterility, yes, that is one of the possible side effects that comes from being on HRT. Over time with consistent intake of the HRT you will most likely become sterile. Each person is different in how long exactly it takes before taking hormones over a long period of time is irrevocable as far as sterility is concerned. Even if some how after being on HRT could result in you being able to make babies, it would be prudent, if you are concerned about being able to father children later, to have your sperm put in storage. In this way you will not have gambled with such a significant issue, you'll be able to have the peace of mind that should you desire to have children later your chances will be more than a crap shoot.

Sterility, at least starting sometime after being on hormones and while taking them, but also it can be permanent.

Don't know about the latter. Certainly spiro can make one have to pee more frequently.

Best to ask the doctor.

I've never heard of incontinence as a side effect. Impotence? Yes that can happen. Sterility most definitely though I wouldn't rely on HRT as birth control.

Other side effects are more pleasant, like men opening doors for you and calling you ma'am and such.

OMG some of the side effects are awful ..like softer skin, less body hair, breasts , felling at peace with ones self, felling better in ones skin and last but not least being seen as your true gender.. The horror of it all. Run for you life's...hehe...

Seriously in most people there is little to no side effects if taken correctly and you keep up with you blood checks. Possible side effects from spiro are having to pee alot and lowering of blood pressure. Estrogen can cause you to be come sterile and loose ability to have erections and worst but very rare side effect is the possibility of a blood clot and or deep vein thrombosis. For most people Hrt under doctors/endocrinologist care is perfectly safe.

Lol, yeah I am looking forward to the more pleasant side-effects.

For about a day after surgery I was hoping my HRT or ANYTHING would loosen up my lower digestive tract!! No luck until day 4. If your friend had incontinence, she should not have been washing her meds down with prune juice!! There is a chance though that she was allergic to an inert part of the specific medication she was taking, in which case you get the pharmacist to get the medication from another manufacturer.

For fatherhood potential, banking your sperm for future use early in the HRT game is the best insurance that your genetic children can be born.

Ger typing on the phone... Anyhow the atrophy of the prostate is profound in TS women taking ht long term. That's is the control muscle, though anecdotally post ops seem to have a higher rate of incontinence than pre-op.

Agree on the Sterility.. It use to be called Chemical Castration caused by the estrogen over time.

The Incontinence.. For me yes.. I still have bladder control but I do have the Occasional "Drip" It's not much but enough sometimes that it could be embarrassing.

Not sure if its from the Hormones or the Spiro or just from things shrinking so much.

I just wear a Panty Liner or a few sheets of TP padding (In an emergency). as a precaution so I am not embarrassed at the most in opportune times.

Make sure your Endo/Doc also does regular Exams on your Testes to make sure no mystery Lumps develop. I can't say mine was caused from the HRT but you don't want it to develop into Cancer and having to go trough this at the same time you're transitioning.. Makes for some interesting Conversations when you have to walk into your local Testes Specialist office full of men for a Biopsy.

I need to be my nest, but its freezing in here!  And GF is all curled up...she's gonna have to un-curl herself, because I'm gonna shiver to death without snuggles

"A whip for the horse, a bridle for the donkey, and a rod for the fool's back.  Do not answer a fool according to his folly, lest you be like him."    Proverbs 26:4-5.....  possibly the first advice about spending time online

Not of people usually, but places have a "color sense" to me.  Not exactly visual, but like a feeling.  Almost a taste or sometimes tactile.    My home, and the temple of my faith community both have a strong feeling of "silver."  A tasteable, nearly tactile radiance...it means safety, and I seek it out.  It kind of transfers to people associated with those places, like my husband.  I knew he was good the moment I met him.  Some places have a color sense like fire, a combination of red and orange.  As you might expect, it is an exciting or dangerous feeling.  Attractive in a way.  Part of me is drawn toward it, another part of me is skittish of it.  Other places have a blue/green color sense, which can be iridescent toward purple-ish.  Its peaceful and calm.    What I really don't like is a sickly, greenish-gray color.  I can't even describe it fully.  The sense is slimy, slick, cold and revolting.  To me, it is a feeling of intense danger about a place or a person.  I'm usually more oblivious to the other color senses, but this one grabs my attention.  To me, it is associated with pure evil.    One of my strongest impressions of the evil color it happened at a natural spring in a state park near where I live.  I was walking around with a friend and I felt it, and she thought I was totally crazy.  I wanted to leave so bad, just terrified.  Thankfully she followed me out.  I only found out later that a murderer had escaped from prison and was recaptured there...he had been living near the spring, and we were maybe within 200 yards of him.  My color sense probably saved our lives.

Not exactly.  Me alone - I'm helpless and can hardly do anything.  But with my partners I'm protected and supported, and a lot more things are possible for me.    My husband teaches a lesson to his kids when they fight, I've seen him do this a couple of times.  He'll hand them a bundle of sticks tied together, and tell the kids to try to break it.  Of course, it doesn't work.  Then he takes the bundle apart, and tells them to break the sticks one by one.  One person alone is easily overwhelmed or broken.  Two or more people together can stand firm against adversity.

When I joined it was purely a play on Maybe. Mae happens to have a couple letters in common with my given name and I started using it when introducing myself to strangers. Since then, actually yesterday, when I caught up with an old friend and told her about my transition she thought she heard "Maeve" when I said "Mae". I could still use Mae as a nickname, it works well with my mother's name as a middle name (she died in 2019 and I love the idea of connecting with her memory more), and my initials wouldn't change if I change my name. So, Maeve it will likely be unless something better comes along. ;)

I've not had a lot of involuntary action in that department and I'm 6mo in. After 3mo. my T was under 30. My doc wanted labs mid-cycle (3-4 days after my shot) oddly, but I am going to insist on getting trough numbers to determine if T is pushing back when serum E is low. I almost felt like I was going to have MW yesterday morning when I woke up (day of my shot), so I get where your thoughts are on the subject. It would be good to know how long that suppression lasts, not that T&E levels are complete indicators--my doctor doesn't seem to have any plans to check for the broader spectrum of metrics I see a lot on forums like SHBG, etc.

Take two   blood letting is complete it took two of them pesky little mosquitoes.   our dog came to us mostly potty trained. She had a few “I can’t wait” moments but for the most part she was good.  She learned to ask th be let out. We had a bell on the door and taught her to ring the bell.  Then she learned how to open the door herself.  As long as it wasn’t locked out she’d go.  We had her trained to a hidden fence and collar she would go to the limit and sit and wait for us to tell her it was ok. She has always responded to verbal commands or my whistles.   Oh and there are obvious negatives about a dog knowing how to open doors.  She would disappear and we’d suddenly see her out the window.  Or we’ would let her out and suddenly realize she was sitting with us.  She never learned to close the doors, only open then.
