That is a horrific, hateful crime. Setting someone on fire as "a joke?" A very sick joke, indeed. Two lives ruined, over hate. This is what comes of all the evil being spewed in the media and in pulpits around the world.

He lit someone on fire as a joke? He didn't mean it? He did those actions deliberately. Nobody made him light that girl's dress on fire. He did that and he can suffer the consequences thereof.

What a sad and terrible crime. One misguided and ignorant child placed into a system that will distort his life while another is forced through the pain of what sound like terrible injuries. Both will have their lives damaged. Pity both, but obviously she is the victim of a non supportive society.

Hate and fear live on, it's learned, it's aquired thoughts from somewhere, you don't just come into the world hating like that and that's no joke....I hope the judge makes a big example in this case, how evil.

Amongst the supportive, some of the comments after the article are really sick, again this sort of thing can be a real trigger, it just futher illustrates the hate that exists in our world, sigh....

I agree Carolyn, I wonder how much influence on these attacks are because of the anti-trans hate groups are spewing so much hate and getting so much attention. I really think that this is the type of actions they hope to spur on.

Anyone that sets fire to another is almost beyond repair to me.

The victim is not a she. They are gender neutral at this point.

I don't think California is worse than elsewhere. I think it's because California reports. It's like the 60s in the city where I lived. There was a massive rise in the crime rate because of minority on minority crime. Bigots said the new freedom caused it-the truth was that it had always been there but until the Civil Rights movement the police refused to take reports of minority on minority crime-or investigate. I knew the people involved and know it for a fact.

California reports and recognizes. I suspect there's also a larger trans population who are out in California.

Johnny hit the mark on this one, in fact closer than he may know. The area this took place in was a route through an ethnic neighborhood where you prove "manhood" by being violent or encouraginging violence and a violent outlook on life. This crime would not have made the classified ads page 25 years ago, much less the news coverage we are seeing. The comment I made above in sarcasm would actually have been the way it was seen back even 6 years ago. This was an area where the certain police calls were investigated and logged as NHI reports. No Humans Involved!! Not an excuse for the suspect to have done what they did, but it is relevant, The victim could not suffer, because only humans can.

Yeah...I doubt there's anything in the water in California. It would be silly for me to prejudge the whole state. It would make much more sense to prejudge religious types when events like this are so rare, yet there are literally hundreds of millions of self-described Christians in this country who will never light anyone on fire.

Yea real funny. There is no way he did not know what the potential outcome would be for setting her skirt on fire.Unless he is metally challenged.I think the mother knows what kind of a kid he is and just doesn't want to go to prison for a chunk of his early adult life.they should throw the book at him and send a strong and clear message to the community as a whole especially the young that this behavior will not be tolerated.

I find the remarks at the end of the article very reassuring and sane. Almost all the haters are staying away from this one. It is simply too heinous.
