Help?

So, I need a bit of advice. I've been using Nutra Nail 5 to 7 Day Growth Formula to help strengthen my nails. However, they still seem to chip and/or break just when I have them almost where I want. I don't do much manual labor other than yard work once in a while and always wear gloves. My hands do spend 6-8 hours a day in water though. Maybe that's why? I can't wear a polish that people can detect, unfortunately.

Anyway, GRRRRR!!! It is SO frustrating. :(

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Hugs, :)

Wanda

From what I understand, calcium supplements may help. It wouldn't hurt to check with your doctor or pharmacist for advice on what strength or what form to take it. I've tried nail hardeners, too, and found them to be worthless.

I know you said you can't do a polish that people can detect, but have you ever tried to see if a salon has a clear gel? Gel polish can strengthen your nails so they don't chip and break under normal wear and tear. I had the same problem with my nails and started doing gel polish instead of just nail strengthener and I rarely crack a nail and much less actually break them off.

God bless

I have nails that resist any attempt to strengthen them. Sally Hansen's probably had many a fine vacation thanks to the money I've spent on her products, and there have been many others whose well-intentioned formulations met their match at the tips of my fingers.

There was a cream made for horses hooves that was reputed to work wonders, but sadly I developed a propensity to graze that got in the way of other things I needed to accomplish.

While I haven't really tried to much , but plan on working on them in the future, my nails cut and chip something fierce. I plan on getting my toes and hands done next weekend, I do want to see if they can apply something for strength as well. Let us now what you find!

I have a clear gel put on mine as well. They don't really stand out if you give them a light sanding and you can grow them to the length you like. Ay first I worried about what others thought, at work and such, now I dion't really care at all and everyone seems to be used to it.

Thanks, girls for all the help. Maybe I'll try the horse hoof cure. Sure would save time mowing the lawn.

I like the clear gel idea. I have some time later this week and I'll go to a salon to see if they an help.

I'll give you girls an update when I try it.

Hugs to All, :)

Some of the issues people have with nails can be due to poor diet!

I used to have a lot of problems when I used cleaning solvents. These tend to dry out the natural oils. I try to keep use to a minimum.

Initially I used nail varnish (polish). A clear undercoat followed by a skin tinted (light pink)layer as I love colour but in my job nail varnish is a definite no no. Finally to disguise things I used to use clear matt varnish overcoat (not common but can be bought).

These days I do not use at all because of the hassle in using (partner not happy with it or the fumes as she is asthmatic).

I have found that if I rub hand / nail cream well in a couple of times a day most problems are sorted as my nails seem less brittle.

Six to Eight hours with wet hands? Thats a lot. Women wear rubber gloves doing such work not only to protect the fingernails but also to to keep the skin soft and not cracking and such. They also use a lot of hand lotion. Much of how men look is self inflicted. Women who are into fashion wear makeup and sunblock, hats, gloves when spending a lot of time in the hot sun. That or they tan the whole body to match which after a while becomes self inflicted early ageing.

I'm having a dumb moment right now (its been happening a lot lately, I apologize) and cannot remember the name of it - but there is something specific in pre-natal vitamins that makes your hair and nails grow rapidly. I've heard vitamin - e on your nails overnight can also do wonders.

A lot of hand lotions these days contain vitamin E. These are what I use.

Actually my whole body is in the water most of the day, Clair. I wear gloves but my hands don't stay dry. My skin isn't a problem. I use lots of lotion and stay out of the sun. Just the nails and I'm not even sure water's the problem. It was just a thought. I plan on using the suggestions here and we'll see what happens. Thanks girls!

This is something I have heard about in the past. All a person has to do is eat more gelatin which will strengthen the nails.

I'll add my penny's worth: try magnesium and calcium dietary supplements. Both are good for this sort of thing.

I am gender fluid, leaning heavily towards trans masc. My eldest is male and despite all the "stuff" we deal with with him (autism, speech delay, etc) I found him to be easy to raise. When my middle kid (female) was born, literally the first words out of my mouth were "I don't know how to raise a girl!" And I really felt I didn't know. She showed me. She's still showing me how to exist as comfortable and completely secure in her gender expression. It is entirely awe inspiring to see all three of them feel so settled in their bodies in ways that I never, ever felt or feel to this day.

That sounded like an awesome opportunity to dress as your actual self. I have to say I'm a little jealous lol. I never got compliments from people and definitely haven't been kissed. I can imagine that part was still really nice and boosted your confidence.

I've been absent so much lately I feel as if I'll never catch up. Too much going on in our lives that's kept me away from the keyboard. and limited my time as "me."   I am so looking forward to your post on how you arrange your life. I know that I won't ever be able to fully transition so finding some happy balance is crucial for me.

Mae, you are so sweet for making this comment.   Desert Fox, you are so right.  I always knew that even though I was part-time, my motivation was way more complicated than a simple desire to wear women's clothes.   Your question is a timely one because in my next post, I am going to talk about how compartmentalized my life is, and the short answer is yes.  I have friends who only know Sally, friends who only my male persona, and a rare few that know both.

@EasyE With my background in Behavioral Sciences I do go to actual conferences for the medical and psychological professionals that deal with Trans Youth, and in those conferences, the ethics of "too fast" versus "too slow and restrictive" are a heavy concern.  There is very thoughtful sharing among the participants for making professional judgments that the therapist is comfortable with without being afraid of what is "too soon" or "not soon enough" to advance to medical prescription therapies. The ethics of what constitute reasonable caution or unreasonable delay are deeply at play in those situations, with the idea to prevent harm while alleviating the patient's stress and other issues.  This type of conference fulfills Continuing Education license requirements that most states and other areas have.  From them the therapist may seem to "speed up" their evaluation process, but it is based on the accumulated experience of colleagues, just as is true in other professions and yes, even trades.

That's wonderful news!! I took our pup in for her Vet check today - perfect. She slept 7 hours last evening and is coming along really well with her house breaking and crate training.   I know you'll have some excitement with a new Boxer!!

Surgeries are drastic, and indeed should be a last resort for minors.  As indeed they are.  It is very rare for anyone under 18 to get gender-affirming surgery.  It is typically only done if the person would be suicidal without it.   Puberty blockers are a way to avoid the "drastic measure" of forcing the person to undergo the wrong puberty.  They should not be prescribed lightly, and I don't think they are.  They are a way to go slow until the person can truly make an informed decision.

My Endo keeps track of several trace chemicals in my blood system that can be affected by our slightly different hormone balance, keeping in mind we have had both hormones all our life, just in different balance.  I did have to change one diuretic I was taking that was crashing out one chemical that does affect energy levels, and it turned out that Spiro was the alternative to that one for the way it works there.  I was never on Spiro for the hormone issues per se.  Let your doctor know about the fatigue sometime today or whenever you read this.

Hmmm .  .  . if I only had a ten-word description that completely described my identity. That would be great, but one doesn't exist. "I'm a girl—and a boy. And neither—and both?" There. Now you know, right? Maybe not. —Davie

I think you should discuss it with your doctor.  I know you are 'asking around' but experience probably varies.
