Laverne Cox Will Star In New CBS Legal Drama 'Doubt'

Breakout "Orange Is the New Black" star Laverne Cox will co-star in the upcoming CBS legal drama, "Doubt." According to The Hollywood Reporter, Cox will play Cameron Wirth, an Ivy League-educated trans woman whose experience with injustice fuels her work as an attorney.

Cool. The premise makes my eyes roll, though. Laverne's character is set up to look like the more ethical and intelligent sidekick/foil for an idiot who ignores the most basic ethical rules for an attorney.

Not thrilled with the premise of the show, can you tell?

I think the real test of the acceptance of trans actors within Hollywood is when they get chosen to play characters who aren't trans. This is a step in the right direction, but its still a pigeonhole, IMO.

Speaking of pigeonholes, I'm still waiting for Peter Dinklage to be cast as James Bond.

Now that would be cool. Peter Dinklage is a great actor, I loved his work in Game of Thrones! I have always been a 007 fan by the way. It even influenced me some in my previous career choices. Back on topic, yeah, I was hoping she would get a role as just a woman character, with no mention of trans anything. Still, if she is does well in this series, maybe the next one will be what we are looking for.

I think casting her as an attorney is a good move. There are several real life trans lawyers and they are excellent role models. I think she can add a lot of her personal battles to the role. Hopefully, she'll also get to defend some trans clients along the way.

It's going to be intereting how she leaves her other show as she was a major player in it.

I’m okay with trans actors being cast as cis characters, or even characters where whether they are cis or trans is never mentioned, but then it’s so important that we are starting to have more openly trans characters. And even more importantly, that we’re having real trans people portraying these characters, too. That’s visibility on two different levels and it has the potential to make a huge difference for so many transgender people out there.

So yeah I'm thrilled that she will be playing a transwoman here & will definitely be checking this show out.

Also for Bond, I’m holding out for Lucy Liu to be cast as the next Bond omg.
