The *other* changes

So we all know about the physical changes that we go through during our transition, as well as some emotional changes caused by the new hormones.

There are some other changes that, while not directly caused by treatment are easy to understand, like being more outgoing, smiling more, or having a better outlook of life.

But then, sometimes there are other changes that make it look like we really are a different person.

For me, one of the things I noticed is that, the handful of foods I didn't like, I'm now perfectly fine eating them. No HRT yet to cause any biological changes in my body that could somehow affect my taste buds.

What's more interesting is that one of these things were olives. They have such a strong peculiar taste that it you don't like them you hate them. They're one of those things that you can taste in a mouthful of food even if there isn't any piece of it actually in your mouth, and if you happen to accidentally bite a piece and you don't like it... you just need to spit it out. But since I transitioned I can eat them whole (minus the stone) and actually enjoy it!

I had some serious changes in my taste buds too. A lot of foods I didn't care for or outright disliked are now foods I love. Pineapple being the biggest surprise. I used to hate pineapple, but pineapple juice is now one of my favorite drinks. I used to drink carbonated seltzer water regularly too, but since HRT it has this nasty salty/bitter flavor that I dislike. Coffee is a lot harder to drink and frequently unpleasantly bitter even when I don't make it very strong. Salt tastes much stronger than it ever did before. I used to arguably put too much salt on much of my food, yet now I'm repulsed by the slightest over indulgence. There are a lot of subtle flavors in various foods and drinks that I never noticed before. It's made trying out foods that I never thought I'd eat a pleasant adventure.

I haven't been able to bring myself to try olives again, yet. Before HRT, olives were seriously the most disgusting thing I'd ever tried to eat. Maybe one of these days I'll give them another shot. When I'm feeling particularly brave. :P

All my life I'd thought that I was allergic to onions. As much as a threw up as a kid when ever I even tasted an onion, it's no wonder really. I discovered a few years ago that I wasn't allergic, just a very strong dislike for them raw. Tonight I actually bought an onion to add to a vegetable lasagna that I plan on making for the women's potluck at our local gay and lesbian community center, tomorrow night. That is some change, for me to actually buy an onion, so that I can cook a dish, that I plan on eating. Wow. That shocks even me.

I`v had a few changes food wise since starting HRT, one of the stranger ones is Chocolate, I never really liked milk choc and only had the 70% stuff, but now the 70% stuff is too sweet for me and now I only eat the 90% stuff and that tastes just perfect for me, but before it was way too bitter/strong.

And although I thought it was a Sugar thing at first, I eat strawberry bon bons and peppermints like they`re going out of fashion (I never ate candy before).

same with alcohol, my tollerance now is So low it`s hardly even worth opening a simple can of beer now unless I`m going to take half a day drinking it or share it with someone.

but the Really freaky change (so much so that my wife even took a picture of me doing it!) is washing dishes! I will actually do washing up now!

ok, it`s only pans and things I`v used to prepare food with and I still can`t bring myself to even Look at used dishes or cuttlery nevermind wash them uo, but Me getting my hands wet and washing up as I went along (without even Thinking about it I might add!) was nothing short of monumental :)

Very interesting. But I still don't think I will try liver! lol Don't like coffee any more? This puts me in a panic. Please don't take my coffee away from me, I love my coffee. But wait, I know lots of women who love coffee! Whew, still a chance! lol again

Maybe I might start trying a few of my lesser liked foods. Might help me eat healthier.

Lots of love,

I also love my morning coffee.  I'll even drink the instant garbage if i have to and this morning in our motel i have to.  Maybe as we go out i'll get a decent cuppa.  Chocolate Mmmmmmm give me the 70 or 80% dark.  One piece is enough but absolutely lovely.

Only i have grown to love shopping even for groceries.  I have a great deal of fun interacting with others as i fill my cart with the weeks needs.  As a man i felt out of place but now it's just a pleasure.

Hugs,

Charlize

I didn't like olives or mushrooms before and I still don't. However, I can tolerate a pickle every now and then, except the kind they put on a hamburger.

I used to hate clothes shopping. Guess what, I think it was just because I was in the wrong department..... :D

Me too!  It was a painful chore to buy any clothes and I never saw anything I liked because I was in the men's department.  Now I love it.

I also have expanded my culinary tastes adding things like asparagus to my food list.

Oh, I am too. I also am eating a lot healthier, but I do still have my occasional guilty pleasures (like a cheese burger).

Age will also change your taste. Your taste buds are replaced every seven years or so and you could start to hate something you loved and like what you've hated for years. But I have started liking other things since starting HRT.

Hmmm...my tastes didn't change.  But then, there's very little that I don't like.  Yeah, I like anchovies on my pizza and I like liver, bacon and onions once in a while too.  :-)  Give me coffee, chocolate, and everything else you're not supposed have.  Yum!  That's why every day is a food battle for me and I run 5-10 K a day.  LOL
