Trach Shave in the Midwest US. Anyone know good place to go?

I'm ready to schedule this. I'm also wondering if this will count as 'surgery' required to change my birth certificate in Illinois.

Just wondering if anyone has had this done in Illinois, or one of its neighboring states? And has anyone from Illinois used this surgery alone to successfully change their Illinois birth certificate.

Hi Jamie,

I don't have any data on Illinois surgeons but good luck in your search. Aside from a cosmetic surgery specialist, I saw that a number of ENT's do this type of work as well.

I think a trachea shave or even facial surgery would be quite a reach to count as gender affirming surgery. You might check with your Department of Motor Vehicles, or Registry for what changes they allow beyond a name change. In NH they do allow the gender marker on your license to be changed. The form needs to be filled out and signed by a "qualified healthcare provider" and there is no requirement for surgery. They affirm that "in my professional opinion, the applicant’s gender identity is (please check one): Male Female and can reasonably be expected to continue as such in the foreseeable future." It's that simple for us.

Gender Change

This office does not require a court order to prove a change of gender. However, such a court order shall be considered as best evidence to process the gender change. A customer who requests a change in file information to reflect a gender change must provide at least one of the following:

• Medical Report Form;
• Psychiatric Report Form;
• Physician’s statement or;
• Other acceptable documentation to indicate that a change has taken place or the customer is in the process of undergoing the gender change.

I didn't see any specific form although I didn't look too hard.

Thanks Jani, I have my drivers license complete and SSA. In Illinois the requirement is "after undergoing an operation(s) having the effect of reflecting, enhancing, changing, reassigning or otherwise affecting gender. Genital reconstructive surgery is not required".

So not sure how this is interpreted. Since I know I want a tracheal shave, it would be nice if this would serve the purpose regarding my birth certificate.
