The response from some select NC people does not surprise me.

'MURICA!

These guys are really headstrong in their beliefs or really want to make it into history books as "people who tried to oppress equality"

The response does not surprise me either but at least it does fire a warning shot if anyone were to try to implement similar rules here.

With the issues of the UK leaving the EU I think the federal government will have extra reason for sorting this as quickly as possible as th US will want to show alignment with Europe whatever is felt behind closed doors.

I think North Carolina has done a service to the trans* folks of Europe. Any country likely to discriminate will think twice. Unfortunately the government of NC is unable to think once.

This article says that the NC law "bars residents from suing for discrimination in state court". This is beyond belief. You can't prohibit citizens from seeking relief in the courts. That's part of the basic US system of government. It sounds like something the cup cakes would do, not a US state. It really sounds like the people who created this law know that it will be struck down in federal challenges, but they're trying to create publicity and make prejudiced people everywhere know that here is another bigoted cause for them to jump on.

All of these people supporting HB2 are part of the U.N. is a conspiracy to take over the U.S. anyway. They would never listen to anything the U.N. or any other nation said.

The UN isn't dictating to the US yet but I fear the New World Order isn't too far off.

State court is the key phrase there. It would require them to take it to Federal Court which is more costly and time-consuming.

Where this puts the US in a bind is that we have asked the UN to intervene in civil rights violations internationally and been a dominant voice in the UN since it's inception. Now we are the ones who are in violation as far as the EU sees it. Not that they have the right to dictate to us but that they do have a right to complain if we are breaking the same treaty they have signed.

You also have the economic implications if they decide to sanction us as we have sanctioned others who we felt were not in compliance with UN treaties.

It could get ugly. But I think at this point the Obama administration can point to the lawsuit already brought as an expression of good faith with the treaty.

The other thing this does is send a message that it is not just the American liberals who are supporting transgender rights but Europe as well. They can no longer say this is something just the Democrats or Obama administration is pushing.

The practical implications of any declaration that U.S. law violates a U.N. treaty is pretty much just bad press for the U.S. Even in cases where the U.S. has been found to be in violation by an international ruling body connected with a treaty, there aren't any teeth to the possible penalties. International censure, that's about it.

It abolished the previously existing tort in the state's antidiscrimination law. A state can do that.

It doesn't bar suing under Federal law in Federal court. I'm not sure how it affects suing under Federal law in state court.

A friend of mine who is an attorney in NC has told me that the intent here was to totally remove jurisdiction from the state courts to consider discrimination claims without regard to basis of the law, either state or federal. Her friends who are bench officers are looking for ways to allow existing suits to continue. None of them like it a bit.

Not really sure why anyone thinks that anyone is going to be quaking in their boots over what the UN might think. China violates human and civil rights under UN law all the time and no one barely gives a crap the UN certainly doesnt lift a finger to intervene. When a Country has UN Security Council veto authority, the UN rarely does anything to intervene or sanction those countries. I honestly see nothing coming from this. The people who support this bill will only dig in further because they will see it as further encroachment on states rights.

We are the main supporters of the UN so as far as international diplomacy it hurts us. And hampers us when we start complaining about violations. Though we have been in violation over other things.

More significant would be economic sanctions by the EU which I doubt they are going to actually take.

The most significant thing is the message that Europe supports our rights and it isn't just liberal democrats out to destroy religion in the US.

Of course, it also has implications in Europe, particularly for former Eastern Bloc countries for whom issues like this are a sticking point with nationalists who see it as encroaching on their culture and have an inclination to follow Russia's mindset, and which creates a barrier to them joining the EU.

I have a friend in Serbia who has explained the situation for LGBT folks there and it's not good. Joining the EU would help, because they would have to come in line with EU policies.

So, when the EU comes out and makes such a declaration about the U.S., it is also sending a message to their closer neighbors.

Same here.  My mind is a jumbled mess.  I'm no great philosopher, nor particularly educated.  Don't open my brain's closet, as all the junk might come tumbling out.

Its been a long day.  I had a good trip with my husband, kind of sorry I had to come home.  I mean, I love my partners, but I feel overwhelmed by the chaos at times.  It was nice being able to just drive and talk for two days, and not feel rushed at meals.  Stopped at a buffet off I-40 in Oklahoma, and I was able to nibble comfortably for two hours!  And taking a shower in a place where I don't have to bother hanging up the towels for later   Its all about the little things....

Hi @AmandaJoy Welcome, and nice to meet you! Congratulations on your Self-Affirmation!  As you've already discovered you're in great company here on this Forum.  It took me 60+ years also.   I understand your thrill and desire to proceed full-steam-ahead but that you've already realized to meter your Journey.  So, I will just end with what I tell most new Members when they arrive ... Hey @KayC I need another tutorial session on this place with you.  Maybe we can talk on Discord or the phone and I can share my screen and do a few messages while Asking you some questions about how this place is organized. How are you doing in the real world?? ... "real world" ???  What is this "real world" of which you speak?

@VickySGV Ha!  Finally figured THAT out!  Though I hate to confess just how long it took me to figure out WHERE to begin typing that "@" sign.  (So I just won't confess it!  ... giggles) I am not sure how private this message to you is ... for example I was going to make a guess about your location (you say near a major earthquake fault) and while there are many places in CA which fit that description, I live near one as well. But I am not sure if being asked that in a public forum is something you want, and I don't know if I am talking publicly or privately right now.  (So, obviously, till I learn what is what, I treat EVERYTHING as public). I think Kay might have already told me about the "@" sign but I forgot ... Guess I have blonde roots ... (I'm actually a Brunette ... Grey but the box keeps me a brunette ... still the number of mistakes I make and how slow I am with learning things constantly reminds me that I must be blonde on the inside!!  ... giggles)

@KymmieL do they have you on anti depressants?  Are they certain they are the right ones for you?  Has a psychiatrist been involved?  My physician first put me on an anti depressant and when things got worse for me he added one that was the initial cause of my cancer.  My therapist recommended I had a different need changed things. My psychiatrist agreed with the particular underlying condition and the choice of medications.   everyone is different but if one medication isn’t working there are many different types and different underlying conditions that require different treatments.  No meds mentioned because what didn’t work and what did all depends on your case, not mine.   Willow

To me loving myself means having the courage to live the way I want and to be me.     I hardly ever really like how I look but I feel good knowing I am trying to be the best version of myself that I can be. It is definitely a struggle sometimes though.  💗Cynthia

I had a five hour road trip today.  I’m trying to grow my hair out so I just pushed it back with a pink hair band, lipstick and gloss, no makeup.    White spaghetti strap top, short black skirt, white sandals with pink toenails!  A couple of rings and bracelets, necklace and hoop earrings.   I felt like a hot mess but it’s my favorite way to travel!

Glad you had a good day, @Willow Mine on the other hand sucked. I have been screwing up again, I even got written up. I may have to educate them on major depression and disability. not that it will work.    OH, well. May be another job I lost because of me. Yes, my depression is about down at the magma level   Kym

This bag is really working out for me.  I had worn out the back on my yin-yang bag so I picked this one up.  It wasn't long before I cut off the flap on it and braided a hemp strap for it.  The zipper is the best feature.  I can spin the bag around and I'm not afraid of losing anything.  I've taught myself to keep all the essential things in it and nothing more.  Here is what made the cut:   Notepad Sharpie Ballpoint Pen Teaspoon Glasses Phone (most of the time) Wired Headphones and/or Bluetooth Carmex and/or Lipstick Flash Drive Current Braiding Project Wallet Hair Clip   And on my keys I have my one inch Swiss Army Knife with scissors and a bottle opener that I like using with mason jar lids.   I don't miss pockets at all now.  The bag is fun and practical.  I can set it on the ground to get everything off my body.  If I need something, I'm looking for a fairly large object.  I always have something to work on with the braiding project.
