A lost friend

I am unfortunately going to have another chance to wear my dark suit tomorrow evening. The best friend of my youngest son (who died 19 years ago) just passed. He lost his battle with addiction.

I remember visiting him in the hospital during detox years ago when i was still an active alcoholic. Here i am sober while a young man of 32 has passed. I can unfortunately understand what his mother is feeling now.

Addiction has taken too many of those i know.

Please reach out if you have a problem. Many of us here know that sobriety is possible but so often we can't do it without help.

May he rest now in that place where there is no pain or grief, but only the love he could not find in life.

Charlize, I am so sorry for your loss. Life is difficult. May he find peace and rest now.

Oh Charlize, that is so sad. I can't begin to imagine how his mom must feel. As parents we all know and feel that you should never have to bury one of your children. Addiction, regardless of the substance/activity is so very powerful. Most people can never understand it. Take care and keep your spirits up and perhaps take solace that in your own sobriety and that you can offer comfort to his mom.

I remember a bout in Alanon some years back. The terrifying fear that so many moms had that if they didn't "help" by enabling, that their child might die... Love with detachment meant having to face that fear head on and require group support and the strength of a higher power. The pain of addiction is certainly a family pain.

Blessings to you and the young mans family

When i was at the viewing i saw again the pain our addictions can cause others including myself. Somehow on the drive home up

I 95 i remembered the same drive after loosing my son 19 years ago. The pain and beauty of humanity struck me. Sober i somehow see both as i have not before. I think the promises of AA are so real.

Hugs,

Charlize

I'm very sorry to hear that, Charlize. My heart goes out to you. Another reminder of how precious life is, and how fleeting.
