Coming Out at work

Hello All:

Wanted to get some advise with coming out at work.  Cause I have let my HR team know and a few others know at work and they all say that they support me and they are there for me and providing me the EEO for work.  But I have noticed since I have come out at work that they recently switched my shift to a 3rd shift where there is less work and no one around with now ex-communicating with me and no one talks to me any more.  I feel like that since I came out at work that now they are throwing me in the deepest darkest part just to keep me hidden now and so the company will not experience a lawsuit since they are afraid of me on coming out.

Any helpful suggestions?

Thanks

Amy

Have you asked why the shift change?  Have they said anything about it being temporary?   I would certainly ask your HR representative to explain what is going on.

I agree that asking them why your shift was changed would be the first step.  Take notes!  If the situation somehow becomes intolerable what they say may be important should you be forced to leave the company.  How do your coworkers feel or have you been unable to talk to them?  Hopefully it will all work out and there will be an explanation that doesn't have to due with your transition but it does sound odd at best.

It does seem strange, but, especially if they have no previous experience, both the company and other workers may be at a loss at how to deal with things. That along with your quite probably heightened sensitivity to their influence may well be having a detrimental effect on relationships.

I agree with the taking notes etc, but also suggest being as friendly and confident as you can. Talk to HR about your future and the way they see it. The thing to avoid is for the situation to become a confrontation. At that point it is hard to resolve and invariably the company would likely take the easy way out.

Just guess work, but it could be that there is a gap between theory and practice.  In theory the company's wants to be open and inclusive or perhaps more accurately wants to portray itself as being open and inclusive, but in practice concerns about someone being off-putting to customers and co-workers may have the upper hand.  Every situation is different, but my best guess is that you will find it difficult to a get straight answer to your queries.

Hello All:

Thank you very much for your help.  In answers to some of the questions.

1. I asked about the shift change to my boss and he stated "He had to get rid of an inexperience employee and he needs to remove that employee due to, too many mishaps and he needs to invoke a 3rd shift rotation starting with me."  That was like 8 weeks ago.

2.  I am asking my HR team as well, but keeping it very professional.

3.  I have been now staying quite, to myself, not sharing anything.  Keeping it very professional with work mates and when I leave my shift, I make sure to be courteous and let the next person coming on shift know about any issues, any hot items, customer complaints so they can be prepared and know how to pritorize the task for the morning and finish up.

The big thing that I have been doing, it staying quite and being professional and only talking and answering when asked.

Thanks

Amy
