The Orville Episode 3: About A Girl

This episode was very thought provoking. The context of it makes it a foregone conclusion that the future human society in the show:

1: uses the word "transgender" more or less correctly.

2: considers operations to alter the physical sex characteristics of an infant unethical

3: assumes that the alternative to 2 is for a child to figure out for themselves if how they are born fits who they are.

I don't want to give spoilers, but I quite enjoyed the episode and I think they handled the topic in an effective and realistic (within the show's context) way.

Yes, I watched it too, and it was very well done, IMO.  it covered the right bases, but wasn't in-your-face about it.  No spoilers from me, either.  Just watch if you can.

I happened to find it on a channel up here in Canada and watched it. I wonder who it was that came up with the idea to have an episode about the issue. I also wonder how the actor/writer/ executive producer, Seth MacFarlane, feels about transgender people and our troubles that we face about surgeries and other medical needs. I would love to have another member of my family jungle to be accepting of transgender individuals even if he is my 11th cousin.

It's been a while since I watched it, but I did think it was well done.  There were a lot of complaints about it but I felt it more or less accurately reflected the varying attitudes and levels of understanding people have in the world today.  It wasn't handled ideally throughout the episode, but I felt that added a sense of realism to it, to be honest.

That episode was more Star Trek than anything Star Trek ever did. It was well done and tackles multiple issues. The one that stood out to me was the Moclan government erasing Topa's true identity to conform with society. Massive parallel to Trump's desire to erase us.

I find this entire Orville series very thought provoking.  There have been more episodes focusing around gender roles, issues and questions than any other show I've watched.  It really does make one think.  It really only has a very subtle hint of comedy throughout...more situational than slap.  I thought with Seth MacFarlane at the helm, it was going to be more of a SpaceBalls type comedy show.  He seems to be pushing the envelope on bringing to theforefront these modern day societal issues instead.  I really enjoy the show overall.

I watched the episode and was quite pleased with the way they handled it.  The child character has grown quite a bit in the second season (a feature of that species' development) and seems to be quite happy as a boy.  I've enjoyed this show a lot, and McFarlane has a way of dealing with sensitive and weighty issues in novel, entertaining and sometimes humorous ways.
