Hobbies and Interests?

Morning all!

 

I'd like to give folks more reason to spend time here - more than just the gender issues we have in common, that is.  So I'd like to hear from everyone as to what your interests are outside of gender issues.

 

As an example, mine would be reading (specifically crime, fiction and nonfiction, and Holocaust-era nonfiction), learning programming languages, and writing.  I'm also a big fan of documentary-type shows on the big streaming services.

 

What fascinates you?

Quite recently I have been playing Farming Simulator 17 alot more. I grew up on a farm and studied agricultural technology in college for two years. When not on the computer I am either in the kitchen making a homemade soup or watching some television; particularly N.C.I.S. and the spin-offs and show similar. I am a fan of the crime scene style shows and movies plus some sci-fi movies.

I love to read books. I play lots of games on my Android devices. I like crime (reading about it, not committing it). I want to relearn basic Spanish sometime soon. I love tattoos. There's lots more things but if this thread keeps up, I'll add more and respond to others.

Oh!  I completely forgot!  I'm taking the Rosetta Stone Spanish course, @ZombieDracula! 

 

The trick once I finish learning it will be to find someone I can speak it with to stay fluent.

Me, too.

 

I love learning things from documentaries.  But my guilty pleasure is real-life crime shows such as "The First 48" and "Cold Justice" - ones that don't use reenactment.

 

I must have seen every "Lockup" episode in existence by now.  In the dark recesses of my mind, I've entertained the thought that I'd end up behind bars some day.  It's best to be prepared.

 

Of course, I'm a writer and have no  inclination, time or opportunity to commit a crime.  Unless I split an infinitive and they've made that a felony, I'm likely to be safe.

I'm working my way through the "Lockup" series now.  I don't know why, but the investigators on the "Cold Justice" series - both of them - annoy me too much to allow me to watch the show.

Where to start. In high school I did paint by numbers, woodworking and did this quite a bit over the years. I have pieced and quilted several quilts, done quite a bit of machine embordiery, and the last few years have done artwork made from metal with lots of horseshoe pieces.

Speaking of documentaries, I've seen most of the Ken Burns series but especially enjoyed his brother Ric's "New York" production.

 

And...I love mob stories.  I have all of "The Sopranos" episodes  on DVD and have watched them three times.  I also own DVDs of the Godfather series, "Goodfellas", ""Casino" and "Donnie Brasco".  Martin Scorsese is shooting a film called "The Irishman" with DeNiro, Pacino and Pesci, based upon the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa.

Me - I can be a bit nerdy really with much research and practice in electronics, both historical and modern(ish)  (just checked - my database is over 34GByte with nearly 25000 files, many books ). It can get a bit deep as some technical data is written in other languages so, although generally easier in a defined setting, navigating some websites can be hard work.

 

Otherwise I do have my art, both drawing and painting and I do get out and have a life LOL,  meeting with our art group every couple of weeks or so. In the summertime I love growing things in the garden and greenhouse.

 

I do some sewing as well when I get chance. It usually happens when my partner needs clothes altering

 

I read fiction, mainly detective stories, and some romance.

 

Sometime back I used to play simulator games on the PC. Starting with Flight Simulator, but then got into submarines. They fascinate me. Nowadays I just don't find the time.

Is farming a hobby?  I'm not sure as there are rare occasions when we end up making money at the end of a year.  It does keep me busy.  Goats, and maple syrup every year and on occasion i'll run the sawmill and sell or use lumber.  I love building things.  I do my artwork on occasion and am currently reading a book called a "Confederate in the Attic".  6 nights a week i attend an AA meeting which keeps me social and of course i cruise around here on occasion.

I enjoy a lot of different things but I'd say  my main hobbies are cooking, woodworking, shooting, hiking/hunting/camping/fishing and reading.  While I do enjoy TV and movies, especially Si-Fi - you know..."to go boldly where no man (or woman!!!) has gone before" Kenna.  ;-)    I also like crime drama; fictional and real-life.   I just don't have enough time to spend on either.

Dev, Did you find it helpful?  I took Spanish in HS and college and was good enough to get by, but I want to improve.  I was going to take a community college conversational course but meeting just once a week, I think it may be too slow of a pace.  Or would I risk getting arrested if I said, "wishing I was more fluent, the pace may be too slow."  Or something like that.  LOL

I'm finding Rosetta Stone very helpful so far.  I'm still in the very beginning stages, but being able to access it frequently definitely helps with retention.  I took a Berlitz course in Spanish at the local school here ages upon ages ago and had a terrible time with conjugating verbs then, but with Rosetta Stone I seem to be doing much better on that front.  I highly recommend it.

 

And if you keep an eye on it for a while, it's bound to go on sale.  I got my copy as a gift during a random half-off sale.

Some years ago I was a serious outdoor scenic photographer. During a summer evenings I loved nothing more than to load up one of my camera's in my car and head for Lake Michigan for a sunset photo. I found great serenity in that.

Around this time of year I bought up as much Fuji Velvia film as I could and spent every spare minute out photographing the autumn colors. New England is most famous for autumn foliage, but many photographers consider western Michigan a close second. The autumn colors can be absolutely breathtaking here!

Then everything went digital and my camera's all went obsolete.

 

I like movies, especially horor movies. I'm watching a horor movie every night at work until Halloween. I like the old "Law and Order" shows and the original Star Trek and early X Files shows. I like listening to music, anything from new age, classic country, classic rock, heavy metal and '80s pop rock.

 

I like burning candles.

I like the forest, cutting and splitting firewood, and bowhunting. Unfortunately, I'm unable to do the woodsy things anymore due to where I live now.

 

And maybe I might add puting people to sleep with long lists of things I like doing LOL.

Can I play too? Still officiating roller derby. Wrapping up the season for most of the leagues. Still doing regular AA meetings, my six year medallion in January. Trying to get moved to Tucson, hopefully that is my Christmas present to myself. I joined Hand Maids, I participated in my first protest at the state capitol last Saturday. Donating many furnishings to a local children's home thrift store. Trying to condense my life again. I am not sure if these qualify as hobbies, just busy work maybe?

 

Oh, and on Oct 20 I have my first appointment with my new trans knowledgable doctor in Tucson. Oct 31 I get my preapproved eyelid surgery here in the valley. I hope I get pretty new girl eyes. Well, that is the buzz in JodyWorld.

I like gaming, board games, rpg games, table top miniature games, and computer games. I also like going to concerts and getting together with friends for a nice night of conversation. Watching anime, movies and such also happens. I rarely have time to read any more though. I love science fiction, fantasy and history.

My list seems boring compared it the rest of you ladies, I love to go out and take pictures so much so that I backed up my picture file yesterday and found their was over 44,000 pictures. I'm now sure if you can call this a hobby but I love to go shopping.

Oh, how could I have failed to mention another thing that was so huge in my life. During the early and mid '90s I did Luge! Luge is a sport, (the fastest sport in the olympics. Even faster than bobsled or the skiing downhill) where you slide down an ice track on your back on a small sled. While I'm very shy and hated interviews, I loved sliding in front of spectators and camera's! I even won some races, though I never competed nationally or internationally.

You wana talk about fast? When you wipe out on a luge sled, as you're sliding down the ice off your sled, you can smell the smoke from your clothing burning from the friction! Though I've seen some serious injuries, I've only been injured once. I did have one crash where I narrowly avoided paralysis or death. But it was a thrill, and it was my life!

If it has wires and electricity in it, its one of my hobbies. 

 

Ham Radio, I have 8 Transcievers and a whole trailer load of antenna material for emergency communications use.  (Approximate value $30K). Other stuff ready if I have to set up a field base when The Big One comes. Generators & other gear.

 

I use my own gear for road shows of the Trans* Chorus of Los Angeles which uses two large speakers, about 600' of various cables, mixers, power amplifiers six or eight other sizes of speakers. 24 lighting fixtures and specialty cases I have made myself. Oh and throw in any of 3 computers for sound and recording.

As far as interests, I used to be knee deep into my work which I loved.   But I'm retired from that and I seem to be losing the finer points of it.  Fair enough.  I always loved putting things together, whether it was building a home or sewing a shirt.  It's just construction.  I still love these things.  I just redid my laundry room and recently made a cute nightshirt using an old one as a pattern.  From my avatar descriptive you can see I am into cars.  I used to race with a car dedicated to the cause that needs to be transported on a trailer as it isn't "street legal" in any manner.  It isn't a hobby or interest, more of an obsession.  I do tend to be a little OCD.  I need to sell the racer as it's a "been there, done that" thing now.  I still love it but physically I am wiped out at the end of a track day as my health isn't what it used to be.  I've sold a bit of my collection and I'm down to a reasonable (to me) number at this point.   Oh and I love music, with a capital "L".  

 

We're just "living in the material world" (thank you, George Harrison!)
