There was no no justifiable reason to keep transgender recruit from military service. When gays and lesbians were discharged it left a void because a number of high security positions. How were going to replace them. The military has to maintain quota of recruit new troops every month. In some cases people who were less qualified came in.

 

In many armies around the world trans soldiers can serve openly. They do not affect military readiness. It's ineffective leadership that affects readiness. I served in the army in 1971-74. I worked in the pharmacy. I was trans, though I didn't know it until years later. I served honorably and ably. No one can tell me I wasn't fit to serve.

The whole issue was not about the ability of trans to serve just like its not about the ability of immigrants to do good work. It is about Trump appeasing his base so that he can stay in power as long as possible so he can keep passing the things he really cares about and those are the things that make his money. It's a shame there are so many bigots in this country that is making it possible.

Gender or gender identity certainly has no bearing on capability in the military, just as it has no bearing on anyone's ability to perform a job in so much as they are left alone to do their job and not be harassed.  As a combat veteran, I am completely ashamed of the way the alleged commander in chief is treating our military, and also using it as a trigger point to sway people to his psychotic authoritarian b.s.

 

I do have some future legal fears especially when I inevitably change my name as far as my military service is concerned, but I hope we are in a different social mode in this country in 3 years when this baboon is ejected.

You can change the name on the documents, it takes a lot of time from what i have heard for those going through that process (about 6 months as I recall).
