Entering the Workforce...

I'm scared of getting my first job. I live in a place that isn't so accepting, and it's hard to find someone who will do so much as call you the right name. I'm in fear of being discriminated against or being turned away because of my identity. I don't know how to handle it. Advice?

Indiana isn't the best place to transition in the workplace, or to be a trans person in the workplace, but it isn't the worst place to do so by a long shot.  Quite a few counties have ordinances prohibiting workplace discrimination against trans people.  You can see the list and get more info Here. 

 

I don't recall if you have already transitioned or are just planning on it, but my advice either way is, just do it!  We all have to work (except those born with a silver spoon in their yap), so you're going to have to figure out the best approach and go for it.  There are lists on line of national and regional companies that have supportive policies, most state and local government agencies do, too.  It is best to have a legal name change before applying, unless you plan on transitioning once you get hired.  You want your documents, like driver's license and SS card, to match what's on your application.

 

I hope that helps.  There are no guarantees, and the workplace can be tricky, but if you need the cash, you've got to do it sometime.
