What does woman hood mean to you?

Today is International Women's Day. I regularly consider what it means to be a woman, how I related to that and how others relate it to me.

Teen Vogue has been quite amazing over the last few years in their political awareness and open affirmation of trans, enby and gender non conforming people. They published a piece today asking a number of primarily young women about what womanhood means to them. I was not surprised, but still pleased to find that they'd included a trans woman among their fairly diverse group of women.

So, I thought I'd share and see what people have to say about their own relationship to "woman" and about your thoughts on what the women in the article had to say.

Hi Julie,

I think one thing special about being a woman is being able to communicate and engage other women as one. For example this older woman slowed down and rolled down her window today when I was out on my walk, and engaged me in such a pleasant conversation, somebody  I had just met, yet was being so friendly and open toward me, I must be approachable, I smile a lot. Last week it was a 30 something black girl that started up a nice conversation with me impromptu, and giving me such positive girl vibes, and high fives as we parted ways. I thought to myself how special to be able to relate to other women in a way that was not possible in that previous life. So participating in the simple aspect of a sisterhood, is perhaps one of the most meaningful to me as a woman, and feeling that inclusiveness. My relationships with other close females to me have changed and strengthened. Being inter connected with others is quite meaningful to me as a woman. Womanhood allows me the freedoms outwardly to express things I've felt inside of me.

Happy Women's day

I totally agree, Cyndee. That's what means the most to me: being affirmed as part of a sisterhood.

Just yesterday I was in Whole Foods wearing a new coat that I got on clearance at Macy's. It's a little more adventurous than I normally go for...camel color with some beautiful faux fur making up the collar, but it makes me feel good.

Anyway, the gal in front of me touched the collar and complimented the coat. I explained that my friends had to convince me to get it because even though it looks super retro cool on me I hadn't been sure. What was lovely was her comment: "Your friends were right. Don't deny yourself something you can afford that makes you feel great about yourself. You deserve it!"

Those random interactions always feel special, and the relationships I've developed with my cis women friends are more meaningful to me than I can express.

I really couldn’t tell you what it means to be a woman because I don’t really know. That was a great article, and they all have such powerful things to say. But I think most of what they say can be said about any combination of gender you identify as. It seemed to me that most of the girls explained what it meant for them to be themselves rather than be a woman. So maybe that’s what it is. To simply be yourself and to be proud of that person!

I guess if I had to have a response, what being a woman means to me is that I don’t have to pretend and lie anymore. I can be proud of how I look, and how I act rather than scared to be truthful and honest. Very simply,  being a woman means freedom to me. ❤️❤️

Kirsten, you're so right. That's one of the things I loved about the article ...how it is experienced uniquely by everyone.

I couldn't agree with you more to Kirsten. Just feeling and being yourself is one of the most important things in life. I feel so great about myself and that I can finally be happy with my life. Hugs all!!!

Yeah I agree Julie. It was very interesting to see so many different points of view from so many very different women. It was very validating for me. Thank you for sharing. ❤️

Quite true.  The amusing thing about opposites is how similar they can be.   My family left Greece because of the conflict between the communists and the militarists/fascists.

This wouldn't even be a problem if they would just leave us alone.  It is a no-brainer.

OMG.  I'm glad it wasn't worse, and you were able to get on it quickly.  Lots of blood can be scary.

Like I said, I'm no tankie, but I do see a world of difference between Joseph Stalin and Bernie Sanders.   If the point is not wanting 'government control' the Right is pretty good at that themselves - as they've been demonstrating lately. This stuff gets complicated.

So, I am curious. Is the Governor going to mandate vaginal or penile recognition photos before one enters the restroom? Considering the Governor has no balls to do the right thing, will he have to pee against a tree outside? Inquiring minds would like to know. I love it when the job recruiters contact me about the wonderful jobs available in Oklahoma. It is so much fun telling them there is no way I will ever go to Oklahoma. When there are no workers, then they can shutter the place.

Ngl, probably Sonic the Hedgehog, the Beatles, or the Monkees. Those are the three subjects I know the most about so I could drop hours of info on them.

Thank you! I'm out of coffee so I have been drinking hot tea instead. Looking forward to the 1st. It's crazy that we are almost in May. This year has flown by really quick! Good to hear that y'all got to sleep in. Hope you have a good weekend too!

It's nice to care about others but you need to live your life as you please. No one be your only source of happiness. Love yourself and don't look back. I lost over 40 family members it hurts but apparently, they didn't truly love me. True love will always be there through the thick and thin. I can honestly say that HRT has made me think in ways that I never thought I would. I get myself some shoes or clothes every month because retail therapy not only helps but it is a reward to myself to show love. I have over 100 dresses. I have a whole walk-in-closet full of clothes and 67 pairs of shoes. I love who I am. I was born in 84 so not all people in the 80's think that way. As far as the name just take your time and be happy with it. I knew I loved the name Ashley. Take care and welcome!

Congratulations Sam,   The common saying her once someone starts HRT is: “Enjoy the ride.”   Best wishes, stay positive and motivated    Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

WOW @Ashley0616 it’s good that you have skills to treat traumatic injuries, as well as the ability to remain calm while managing others needs to get yourself and the boys ready to go to the hospital. Proud mama bear skills. I’m glad that he’s doing well.    Meanwhile back at the ranch, we slept in and I’m just now finishing my 3rd cup of coffee.    Hope everyone has a wonderful weekend.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Well yesterday was not fun. I was getting ready to make dinner and I hear screaming and crying. I look over and my son put his foot through glass. He gashed near his Achilles tendon. Thankfully that is intact. I didn't freeze for a second. All of my military training came into play. I doctored him up and got Jett ready and myself and we headed to the ER. He is doing ok today. He says he is in pain but doesn't need Tylenol. He is a tough cookie!

Hi,   It's seems today is my trans birthday.  I'm beyond excited. Just picked up my testogel from the pharmacy. Although I naturally have doubts as I'm sure do we all, they are rapidly disappearing. Yesterday I was so nervous I kept claiming I'm not trans, despite grinning like a fool knowing I can pick up my prescription the next day. I'm shaking and on the verge of happy tears. I will put on my first sachet this eve. Thanks so much to this forum and kind words from people. This is the first forum I found when I began seriously questioning.
