this is speaking hypothetically, as i recently vented about problems i've been having on a non-trans discord forum and another user commented that it sounded a lot like a problem one of their relatives had. it's put a frightening bit of wonder in my head and i do not have the reading comprehension skills needed to pick out the answers i'm looking for from the internet's pseudo-medical garble. the info available is only made more confusing by the fact that this issue seems to involve a lot of cisgender hrt.

i have not seen a doctor in more than a decade, i am not diagnosed or diagnosing myself, and i am not asking for treatment advice. all i am asking is that maybe someone who does have it/or experience with it could translate the information into commonspeak. i don't want to spend the next however many months there are left until i can afford a checkup wondering. i want to know, one way or another, what would happen transition-wise if i were to test positive for this problem.

 

is the "hrt" used to treat hyperthyroidism based on estrogen or testosterone? if it depends on assigned gender, how likely would a doctor be to be open to dealing with it as they would with the opposite gender as what's assigned? and is whichever hormone they use to deal with this issue likely to either complicate an ftm's HRT effects later on, or prevent a doctor from allowing transition at all?
basically, are thyroid issues an instant door-shutter for ftm transition?

No they are not an automatic disqualifier.

I've actually looked into this a little bit since hypothyroidism runs in my family.  From the research I've done, the medications deal with hormones other than estrogen and testosterone so it doesn't look like it should affect transition, but it's definitely something to discuss with a doctor at some point.

thank you. i have a few known, less dramatic type things going on which are far more likely to be causing such things than any thyroid issue, but hearing what you've had to say makes the chance of someday having to deal with it seem a lot less ominous. folks in the medical field probably think we're nuts for prioritizing transitional effects of various ailments over however much of a pain in the butt they might be health-wise.

...i really need to learn how to speak plainly and not in circles. other people can do it and i'm jealous.
