RuPaul's Drag Race UK Gets U.S. Release Date

When i see this advertised my first reaction was OHHHHHH NOOOOOO

 

Maybe im wrong? Perhaps im a minority that actually finds this kind of television just tacky and of no value. It just reminds me of pantomine dames.

 

So i have to admit. I have watched about 10 minutes of it once and drew a conclusion from that small window into it.

 

Should i be very afraid or should i give it a chance? Is it just me?

Well my partner hates this type of thing and with this show I have to agree with her. It is really a fine line, I think, as I used to love 'Little Britain' with it's take on transexuality etc. She also hates pantomine dames, and I do see the connection. I suppose it could be seen as a bit close to home for me it identifies the type of person I hope I would not be seen as.

Ru Paul is a funny gay character.  His productions are in the tradition of drag.  While the performers dress in "female" attire they are way over the top.  Some may think they mock female beauty but at best are not hateful.

Not my taste but i've laughed at times.

I to have a strong dislike for Little brittian. I feel David Walliams made his money on the back of ridicule for at the time an in the shadows minority. Its not like now and im sure it would not be allowed. Matt Lucas, Well he is just as bad but not in the same league as walliams.

 

Even now he still does the gay act for a cheap laugh. But it isnt really funny. Its just quite sad. I will say. From what i read he is a great writer. But he should leave comedy to those that do not base there whole act on a camp gay man or a very sad bearded tranvestite in an old dress Doing lady things. Anyway thats my little brittan rant over.

Panto dames. Im neither here or there just as i am with drag queens. They dont bother me one bit. Dames Its a tradition really going back to the times of shakesphere. Then Women were not allowed to act in theartre therefore men had to play those parts. In fact i went panto with a pal and her little boy a year back. There was dames. I was also shouting back "Hes behind you" and "Ohh no he isnt" Along with everyone else.  It was very amusing. Hense we know what to expect and what is required from a panto dame its many years old

 

I think really it boils down to how comftable you are with yourself.  It was never always the case. But now i do not feel associated to men playing women. So i have no anomosity for them. Good luck if thats how they make there money. Christopher Biggins made  pratically a whole career from it.  No one calls him a -transgender- or any other such derogatery term. Its just an act.

I watch about 10 minutes of it once. I find it very droll. I would like to say it will not catch on here. We do not hold it in the same light. But when i see some of the rubbish hauled out on television. I believe they will just keep on until you have no choice. I do recall they refused to show the american version here a few years ago. However it did creep onto cable tv and such like. But the mainstream wouldnt touch it.  We have a show here. Called strictly come dancing. Its our version of Dancing with the stars. Which i do really enjoy. This year one of the drag race judges are a supposed  celebrity. Michelle Visage . I had to look up who she was. I will assume they are just trying to prepare the british public for drag race uk appearing. As she keeps saying it. We brits like to be eased in to things slowly. Blitzcreig a show rarely works over here.  I will say this regardless. I quite like her tenacity in getting on with it. She is actually a very good dancer. So far.

 

Im sure Drag Race UK may have funny moments. But ill be honest with you i will not be watching it.  Not because i find it rubbish telly. which it is. (My opnion) because. I dont watch that sort of stuff. Unless its a decent documentary on some poor trans girl that has stuggled or such like. However im sure someone will take offence to it in the climate we now live in.  Im surprised Drag Queens still exist. To me it wasnt danny La rue. Then it was just a cheap seedy club act. I do recall there was a big outcry when they tried to bring drag queens in to Childrens story times at primary age and such like

I do believe it is an American idea. That did not go down to well in certain quarters in the UK. As I said You cant just Blitzcreig things here. We Brits like to be introduced slowly to change.

I must admit that I am not very keen on drag queens.  I find them a bit creepy, rather like clowns.

 

They always seem to be very popular at LGBT events though.  Why do gay people like them so much?

Drag Queens have been associated with Gay culture because the best know and most (in)Famous have been gay men and it has become an Icon of Gay culture since the 1920's and 30's.  It is this association that erroneously makes the conservative straight culture equate them to sexual perversion and as potential child molesters.  Some Drag performance is good theater, but most to me is obligatory exaggeration of something not worth seeing.  

 

The film / musical  Cabaret which takes place in emerging Nazi Germany is an insight into the Gay culture back in the 1930's.
