Wig Buying

QuoraQ

Recommended Posts

Has anybody else had terrible luck buying wigs online? I've bought 6 now and none of them were super expensive. Average $40-$60... Somehow there has been something wrong with all of them. Shedding, frizzing, too shiny, fake looking part, etc. I understand that quality doesn't come cheap and I'm looking at spending closer to $200 for anything that could pass as a real head of hair so... Have any of you bought such a wig? If so, where'd u get it?

Yeah, the cheaper ones don't last super long. What they don't tell you though is that you can prolong the wig life and improve appearance with wig products. I alternate a silicone spray and detangler once or twice a week on the advice of my friendly neighborhood wig store and comb it out every morning and every evening. I've also got a spray for sheen that I use sparingly when I start to look a little dull.

For a more expensive wig, I'd insist on a fitting. There's a place in my town that does that as a boutique service. I haven't been yet but... my profile picture? That's my latest. I've got it pinned out of my face with a french-style barrette, but that was $50 from the wig and beauty store I can walk to. I strongly recommend the wig and beauty store experience if you've got one handy. It's hard to gauge what will look good on you unless you see it on your head. I've got an awful wig in my collection to prove it. Everything after the first two I bought in person.

Hugs!

Unless you are extremely lucky, cheap wigs are going to look like that.  $200 to $400 is the range for the better looking / behaving synthetic wigs.  Brands that I have had good luck with are Noriko, Jon Renau, Henry Margu, Revlon, Louie Ferre, Rene of Paris and Raquel Welch.  The trick with all of these was to have a wig stylist standing by who could cut the wig to my face and could show me how to care for it.  Even better is to bite the bullet and go into an actual wig store and have them help you find a good one that they will back up.  Many sites carry the brands I have had success with so I suggest you look for a company near you that carries one of the brands and they will have a few more as well.  Nice hair does not come cheap.  Others will disagree with me I know and may have stories of beautiful hair in the cheaper range, but the ones I liked the best were the brands shown above.

I spent a good deal trying to find a wig and style that felt and looked good on me.  Oddly when i found a style that works it was not very expensive.  I got it through Beauty Trends and now i get backups when they have a sale going.  The average cost is around $70.  I usually have two that i use.  I try not to wash my best one and wear it only when i'm going out.  When it gets tired or needs a wash it becomes a secondary wig.  Despite following the directions on shampoo and conditioner mine seem to loose something.  In the course of a year i probably use 3 or 4.  The cost of that is less than a hairdresser.

By quite a bit I assure you.

The other day I was shopping for a trench coat on QVC, and later the Joan Rivers show, they had an hour of all kind of wigs. Even though I was not interested of wigs, I watched that show.

Any how my lovelies, this is the trench coat I ordered:a373958_100_102.jpeg.3035b167dff6d811f5f3fb9393b762e9.jpeg

I like that coat.  I have a yellow one that is similar.    Good taste!

In these days of Covid wig buying is more complicated.  Even where wig salons are open (and I'm not sure that's the case in L.A. County), the supply chain is screwed up, so you still may have to wait unless you're lucky and the salon has what you want in stock.

I recently got a new wig online and was very lucky, in that it looks and fits fine and I didn't have to modify it at all. It's from Gabor.  I paid $135 which I think is a good price.  It seems to be of very good quality.  We shall see.  My wigs have averaged around $120-150 and most last about three years.  But I always have two on hand so I'm not constantly re-washing the same one and I keep them on a Styrofoam head at night to maintain the shape.

I'm checking this one out. Looks promising! I kinda live in the boonies so theres nowhere within a reasonable distance for me to go for a wig fitting. Gotta drive to Minneapolis for counseling at some point in the near future so maybe I'll hit up a wig salon then and there... I found and selected a counselor with this site so I wanna take this opportunity to say thank you! Going to do that will definitely the first real mile stone on the road to medical transition so I'll probably be bawling my eyes out the whole day. If my counselor is smart he'll get his chance to milk out the insurance money by perpetuating the amount of time I spend crying.

Any who, B4 I start crying...

Wigs! Gotta love em! Make u look like *female celebrity name here* while cutting off the circulation in your scalp. Whatever silicone spray Jackie was talking about, I'm getting some. Ha! I'm done talking now.

Thanks, Jackie! Thinking I'll always have some sort of combo between synthetic and real hair so this will be some good stuff to pick up.

Buying wigs online can be a real test in frustration.  However, I did actually find my go to style online, quite lucky I have to admit.  I was so happy with it when I received it, I bought several more in different colors.

If I was a little younger, I'd buy this one.  It would be awesome for special occasions.

Society is preserved by passing on proper roles for people, which works for the 90+ percent that it works for.   We were all taught from an early age that breaking out of the classification was a shameful thing, even when, actually, it is not.

I'm probably showing my age.  I haven't looked at a guest count in a long time.  Doing FB and staying off forums for a while.  Previous forum use had fewer bots if any and guests were actual people, mostly, unlike today.    Any AIs or bots struggling with GD are welcome.  I would love to read your introduction.

I've seen this on a lot of forums tbh. That's how a lot of content ends up on internet archives. You've got loads of bots scanning the site at all times and archiving it. Forums are actually nice (in comparison to social media) in that the guest count gives you a pretty good idea of how actively the site's content is being archived. Basically just don't post anything you don't want archived.

Kids are resiliant with therapy and strong support ;-)    They were all elementary age when their dad died and are teens now, and how they've grown and developed as young people, already, takes my breath away.   I'm working on communicating changes clearly and without shame, which is difficult basically all the time because of feeling guilty over doing gender "wrong" for so long. Working on that myself! <3

Allow me to add that people should think twice about posting pictures of themselves, with the facial recognition software that is out there.  Those in stealth or who are not fully out may discover they are suddenly and unwillingly fully out in ways they wish had not happened.

Funny how when i read the topic name i thought you were asking about the study of plants and animals.  I'm a bit into that as a farmer at va time when a cell phone makes plant  for insect identification easier than it has ever been.    Now on to your topic.  I don't farm in the nude.  I have wondered at whether i would skinny dip as i did as a kid without thought of how my body might affect others.  The effects of hormones makes me different from the average person and perhaps i'm "neither fish nor fowl".  I would certainly depend on who my fellow passengers on that cruise would be.   Hugs,   Charlize

This is also a relatively small forum and it can take a long time, seemingly, for someone to get around to replying to a post.

I am also pretty sure that several of them are folks who are "trans curious".  Sometimes folks who are trying to find their own identity, are attracted to trans folks or who are simply interested in the trans community.   There may also be some who wish to do us harm which is why ......... I've just learned to smile figuring "i'm on candid camera".   I'm sure many of our younger members never experienced that show so my age is showing.   Hugs,   Charlize

Most of those "guests" are web bots from China, Indonesia, France etc. looking us over. They are mostly benign.  All they can see or gain access to are the general forums.  Members should be careful not to post anything that could readily identify themselves such as real names, addresses, phone numbers, etc. They do not have access to our gallery, blogs or private messenger. They seem to haunt all forums. Not just us. I should add that they can make us known across the internet. That's how prospective members find us. Google would be a good example.

Heck I didn't even know they could go up that high! I just have a four burner and one to keep stuff warm. What kind of pies did you make?

I'm sure you'd rock it, girl!

That's all the matters.   Well me and the wife rode to Perkins for breakfast. As we were waiting for our food. Being it is Sunday There are a few gentleman in suits, my guess from church. I think to myself. I hope I never have to wear one of those monkey suits ever again. Now a nice dress maybe.   Hugs,   Kymmie

From time to time I've looked at 'Who Is Online" and I have consistently noticed that members are ALWAYS outnumbered by Guests by a wide margin, sometimes, like a minute ago, by more than a 10:1 margin.  I have never seen that before on an internet forum.  It can be explained partly by the nature of what this is, that it draws the curious and they are certainly welcome to read here, and to join, but it leaves me with a feeling of being in a fishbowl.  I wonder who ARE these people?  Donald Trump, is that you? Biden? Sinwar? Putin?  We can only guess.
