So I've been thinking, I listen to a lot of rock music...and then some other random stuff here and there, and, other than that, I listen to a lot of i guess what you can stereotypically call "girly music", and if im honest, when i look through my music, most if not all of the female singers i have in my music are because of sex appeal, or like im majorly celeb.crushing on them. (examples - katy perry, anna nalick, gwen stefani, halestorm, the donnas, shania twain...) so im wondering if anyone else does this? and if it's a common guy thing or if it's just a weird me thing? lol.

Hmmmm I guess I like some 'girly' music (if by girly you mean pop?) like TATU or Tata Young.

I don't think music should have a gender, though; it's about what you like or what appeals to you, has a good theme or voice/pitch et cetera. c:

I have mostly Japanese, German and Russian music but I'm an American. Music doesn't make you who you are, it's just what you like (like April said).

OMG XD I'm listening to Tata Young right now. :D

Anyways, I like some female artists but like Michael says I have mostly Japanese, German, and other types of music that I listen to, even though I am American. xD I mostly listen to male singers though.

Anddd It's not an odd thing, everyone is different.

There was an old publication from the 70s that I used to read, called Stereo Review, they reviewed equipment and new recordings.

One time the record (that's right actual vinyl) reviewer gave his list of all time favorites and two of his favorites were Cher's Album Covers - but not the albums and Carly Simon's legs - he didn't like her music either so no My Gen, you are far from alone.

Hmmm.... I think I listen to mostly mid-nineties grunge. I have no idea what's considered manly these days. Those names you mention, My_Gen...I only recognize a few. If that's what you like, then that's what you like.

Is Katy Perry that "I kissed a girl" lady? I heard that song on the radio last summer. My first thought was "hey, that's kind of catchy". My second thought was "I'd better not let anyone catch me listening to that". As an aside, that's a kinda racy song. I didn't like that my little sister (13 at the time) knew all the words.

I'm not going to gender your music, but I'd probably file Katy Perry under "guilty pleasures". ;)

Personally, I go for metal and all the 'cores but that's just me. It is definitely not unusual for guys to listen to music because they think the vocalist is hot. Don't worry about it. :) Even if it was unusual for a guy, everyone has both some masculine and some feminine traits in them.

yeah im big on grunge music as well.

hmm, if by "guilty pleasures" you mean i listen to her stuff because shes a total hottie and that also includes her voice :D

by "girly" music mainly i meant sappy songs and love songs, that ill listen to just because the people who sing them are attractive. and stuff like katy perry by "girly" i just meant, more broadly, things that girls are likely to listen to but guys arent. so like dance/techno etc. in addition to the sappy love songs. lol i just think its funny i listen to music just because they're attractive. like what sally said..although generally if it's someone whose music i dont like i wont even listen to it, but things i would normally be apathetic or indifferent about i end up liking for the wrong reasons :D

Dude, you don't have to justify why you listen to certain types of music. Yeah, a large amount of entertainment is based off sex appeal, and it's likely that you're responding to it, but that really doesn't mean anything other than that you're human. Everyone does this, male, female, androgynous, neutrois (sorry if I'm forgetting people) whatever. Why do you think marketing campaigns are so built around attractive people and/or sex? It's kind of an accepted fact that attraction drives almost everything to an unprecedented degree. So just listen to whatever music that you want. We're all used to the degree of bad taste that hot girls/guys can provoke ;)

I listen to a very wide variety of music. Hard rock, classical, metal, pop, country, New Age, techno, and others. Included in this list are groups that tend to have more gals than guys listening to them - N'Sync, for example. For me, music is not about gender.

No way, man. Music has got to be something that's personal for you. What music you like shouldn't be determined by what your friends like. I'll admit freely that I'm a music geek. I mostly listen to jazz and classical, but I also listen to a lot of flamenco, R&B, and indie, plus the other random stuff. My music collection is kind of eclectic, I guess, but my music tastes are kind of eclectic. One of my best mates loves hip-hop and rap, and I can't for the life of me find a way to enjoy that music very much. He's a great guy, but his taste in music is terrible. My point is that your music a) shouldn't be a gendered thing and B) has to be what you like.

That said, there are tendencies. I don't think there's anything wrong with listening to someone because you think they're hot, for the reasons that Cody said. I also don't think that these tendencies should override your own taste. If you like ...*checks for artist name*... Katy Perry, and you're secure in your masculinity, more power to you, mate.

I must say, I think it's perfectly justifiable to listen to Katy Perry because she's attractive. (Because, MAN, is she attractive!) :P

I have a rather androgynous music selection. Chock full of hard and classic rock but with Broadway and Disney musicals, too. And then there's like, random classical and indian music I like, too. It's kind of typical of me in general. All my female friends say, "Ew, why do you listen to Nirvana?" but I'm sure most any guy would be like, "Why do you have Enchanted on your iPod? [and know all of the words, too!]"

AGREED.

Music has no gender. I listen to mostly male singers, broadway musicals (RENT, Wicked, Avenue Q FOR THE WIN), and quite a lot of international music. I don't give into the drama of knowing which band musicians belong to which bands; as long as the music is good, I don't care. Music has no gender or race or religion. It simply exists. It's my default topic when I have NOTHING in common with someone, because everyone loves music.

and Pól what i meant by the guy friends thing was, i wouldnt mind having a group of guy friends i caould just hang out with and be like "do you ever listen to someones music just cuz theyre hot?" or if they started criticizing me for it i would bring up the topic...rather than bringing it over here. lol. ive got internet groupies instead i guess :D

you know, i do the same thing with movies. like ill watch a lot of chick flick/romantic comedy type movies because of the girls that are in them. i really dont enjoy them very much if they arent rated PG-13 or R though :P

The Russian TATU? I heard that there's two bands with that name. If it's the same one I'm thinking of, I listen to them too, sometimes. ^^

I agree :)

Music has no gender.

A.W.E.S.O.M.E quote LOL

I listen to mainly rock/metal etc. but I sometimes listen to other bands/singers outside those.

My favourite band is Axxis, and they're described as power metal/80s pop rock LOL

Disney has some great songs - Big Bad Voodoo Dady's covered one from the Jungle Book.

The Little Mermaid had a couple of greeat ones - my favorite is Under the Sea.

The tradition goes all the way back to his first full length animated feature - Snow White - Hi Ho!

Disney himself realized that music was a major motivational tool and used it well in his films, that tradition at least has survived him.

That's not an identity indicator (bein a guy) thats a orientation indicator :P You dig chicks. Which (and I actually thought of it on another thead you responded in but its more relative here) I can't help but wonder if your friends/peeps in the dorm know that? I only ask cuz it seems as if if they did, and you could be more "relaxed" about groovin on the women, you could eliminate at least a percentage of your frustration/uptightness issues.

It'll happen man. You can't force it, but you've to get out there. If you're confident in yourself and friendly, it'll just kind of happen. But I know what you mean about the group of guy friends. Personally, I don't think I'd do it like that. My M.O. would be more like to just kind of play the music in a group setting and then when someone asks the obvious question of "why the hell are you listening to this," I'd just say something like "Dude....[Katy Perry]'s hot." And then probably kind of laugh. But if you get a more philosophically minded crowd, it might be better to raise the issue in a more cultured way :P

But there's nothing wrong with internet groupies...:D

this is the only way i've made it through chick flicks...it's practically a time-honoured tradition i think.

Under the Sea is quite possibly one of the best songs ever - I have the sheet music and I use it as a warm up (when I don't have time to warm up properly).

Some of the best songs, I think, are from Hunchback of Notre Dame and The Lion King. The ones from Hunchback are somewhat dark (it's a pretty dark movie for Disney though), but they're catchy and interesting. I like Heaven's Light/ Hellfire and Court of Miracles. Then Lion King has all of the african, and WHO DOESN'T LIKE FURRY ANIMALS SINGING AND PLOTTING TO RULE OVER HYENAS? Ahem, got slightly carried away there. But it's still a good movie. The opening song - Circle of Life is just one of the best songs ever. So is Can You Feel the Love Tonight.

I'm sorry, I think I just got gobs of dork all over this thread.

My music library has to be one of the most diverse in existence, but I can get "girly music" with the best of 'em, you better believe it.

I'll put it this way, imagine yourself on your way to a construction site in a crewcab with 3-4 other guys when a great love song comes on the radio and one of 'em says, "Man turn that ****!"

It was then I most always thought to myself, "**** it!"

When I was a kid growing up, I was considered the baby sibling of the family. I was often the last to know of everything, and since I wasn't old enough just yet to stay home by myself, I had to tagged along with my family members who drove their cars, this included going to church. I never knew other religions existed; all I knew was about the teachings of Christianity. It's easy to join a church, but what if things aren't what it appears to be than what is preached? Strange things began going on at the church in which group leaders didn't want the news media to know about it, such as an almost drowning during a baptizing among other things. The preacher/minister began to sense I wanted out of the cult. Followers that was nice to me in the beginning, was now talking behind my back, not encouraging me to find another church that I would feel more spiritually connected to.

An option to opt out is one thing, but removing the content entirely (for everyone) is something different.  I don't think it's beneficial to isolate one's kids from the broader culture since they are going to have to live in it eventually.  If something about it bothers you, you need to explain why.  Pretending it doesn't exist is a disservice to them.   In my (and my ex's) more conservative past, we considered homeschooling.  But we also realized our kids had to live in the broader culture and needed the socialization. Two of my adult children do homeschool now.  I have mixed feelings about that. Another of them is a public school teacher.   I personally would prefer that scarce resources not be diverted from public education.  The current move against public education bothers me.  For many kids it's all they have.

Perhaps a bit of light might exist if i look at this as a further verification that simply disliking the existence of a school's policy is not a reason to sue.  The rights of these parents or their children are not harmed.  They simply cannot dictate policy because of dubious beliefs.   Hugs,   Charlize

Life has its twist, and who knows what the future holds. She may only want to know your family and medical history’s long term chronic health history. Then again she may become your biggest supporter in your current life situation.   I am an optimist. Managing a support group takes a great deal of work.  When i found this site there were ,to my knowledge, only 2 sites that supported anyone whose gender was out of the "norm".  I had searched before and only found porn.  i'd almost given up. I hope that you are finding what you need here.   Hugs,   Charlize

This also isn't necessarily trans-positive in itself. They're just saying the case doesn't have strong enough ground to sue because the plaintiff didn't bring enough evidence to court. Basically, that could mean that, rather than not wanting to do the case, they feel that there is insufficient information given to do so. By leaving the suit be, it also leaves no precedent for future cases to be built off of. This just leaves holes for court to get messier in the future. Precedent is essential in all types of cases. Giving a ruling, one way or another, would be pretty essential to building cases of the same nature in the future. By letting this go, they aren't really supporting trans people -- they're just dismissing the issue all together, which, in reality, doesn't help either side of it.
    • RaineOnYourParade
I don't personally agree with people opting out of LGBT education, but I suppose it would depend on the context it was taught in. Parents do have the right to opt their children out of sex ed and such for various reasons, so if it was taught in line with sex ed (which would make sense, as those classes also cover puberty as well as sometimes relationship health, so it would be about in-line with how heterosexual students are taught about their own types of relationships), I would understand them then being able to opt out. Similarly, parents often have options to opt their child out of reading books with "disturbing" content, so if the novels chosen for LGBT discussion have a large focus on homophobia/etc., an opt-out option might be made available due to the intensity of the content rather than the content itself. I've seen these for books like To Kill a Mockingbird and All-American Boys that discuss racism in-depth, as some parents might not be comfortable with their child/teenager reading intense content. I disagree with the choices to opt-out of reading these books since I think they're important, but I do understand why they're provided.   So, I think whether an opt-out option would be provided for these topics would depend on the way that they were presented. I didn't see anything in the article saying where the topics were being presented (though correct me if I'm wrong). Are they being talked about in sex ed or in content that may be considered disturbing? In that case, it wouldn't necessarily be LGBT-phobic legislation, per se -- It's about in line with what is in line for dozens of topics.

G'morning! Green tea for my morning beverage. My mom made me eat breakfast so I could take a pill... and now I feel sick, thanks to my weird stomach .-.   Stomach issues aside, I signed up for a story gift exchange a little while ago and just got in the story with four minutes to spare! Liiiiittle close for comfort, but, hey, it's in!   We're at that point in the school year where we aren't doing much. AP testing is done for my history class, so we're watching a WWII film rn (Dunkirk). My college course is already over as well (the semester ends earlier), so I've really only got two classes to worry about, and one of those is an art class. Lowest stress I've had all year.
