Looking to Start HRT -- Seek Advice

Hi. Keira here. I am seeking recommendations for endocrinologists in the south eastern Ohio region. Does anyone have any suggestions, advice, tips to locate one, etc? Also, if anyone has any clarifying questions for me, I would be more than happy to answer them. I saw my general practitioner today and he says I'm in great health. He however, does not handle HRT and recommended I seek info on a good endo. Once I find one, he said he's more than willing to make a referral. In the meantime, I will be reading up on various medications, etc. Thanks for reading this poorly worded plea for assistance.

I wish I could help you find one but I’m not in that area. I’m almost 5 months in and the best advice I can give is patience and the biggest changes are mental.

Hi Keira: The advice I can offer  is to check your health care provider (if you have one) for local doctors. Some are Trans friendly, some not so much. They are supposed to be neutral and provide the same services to all, but sometimes not, depending where in the world you are....

My mistake was going to a Tele-Doc a girlfriend recommended at the start of the Pandemic, when no doctor would see new patients. He recommended the standard Estrogen and Spirolactone to start. I got some on line, and jumped in, months later my labs came back all screwed up because of the Spiro, and I noticed I had to use the bathroom every 30 minutes, because it is a diruretic, and didn't work with my hypertension meds. Long story short, hook up with someone who can monitor you and do regular blood work to be sure there are no conflicts. I'm OK now, but had a scare...

Hugs, Wanda

Hi, @CallMeKeira!  If you've not yet located an endo doctor who's experienced with trans patients, try checking with local university-affiliated heath care facilities and/or hospitals.  They often keep track of such things, so that even if they can't treat you directly because you're not enrolled in their university, they can assist with recommendations.

Best of luck, and best wishes,

Astrid

Hi Keira! I got some very wise advice about health care providers (HCPs) early on in my own story that has proven very sound over the years, so I hope this helps. There are basically three things you are looking for:

  • Find HCPs you are comfortable talking to about your most intimate issues, physical or mental. They should also be receptive to answering all your questions (multiple times on occasion), listening to your needs, and be very realistic when presenting you with choices and their consequential trade-offs.
  • Look for HCPs that are experienced with transgender care (as in they have other patients in your same boat) rather than just being "familiar" with it. Definitely do not become someone's first transgender patient!
  • Build your own "team" of HCPs that can and will talk with each other when needed, especially when starting HRT or considering surgeries. Your core team should have three people to start - your PCP, therapist, and endocrinologist - and they all need to be able to communicate with each other to give you the best possible care.

So with that advice in mind, I would start your search for an endocrinologist with your PCP and therapist first; see who they recommend and work well with. Hormones are going to throw your blood tests off so your PCP will need to know, and once they kick in, your therapist is going to have a hot mess to deal with for a while. If all four of you are communicating well, things should go off with minimal hitches. Good luck and have fun with this next step in your journey!

I was always told that one should see an endocrinologist for HRT. After contacting one that notes transgender issues as a specialty, I found it was going to take quite a bit of hassle to get an appointment and it wasn't certain I'd be approved to even SEE them plus many months wait. My therapist though, noted that some people get HRT through their primary care doctor, so I am starting there for the moment and at the very least, I'd need the referral from her to be able to see an endocrinologist.

Kathy, your advice sounds very wise indeed. "Hot mess" also sounds about right...I am emotional enough now, so OMG what's it going to be like when puberty #2 hits...

Not sure.  The perp is a minor.  The problem here is NOT transgender, the problem here is incompetent and criminal administration.  See https://www.nbcwashington.com/news/local/family-of-loudoun-co-student-sexually-assaulted-ineptitude-of-all-involved-is-staggering/3231725/ It is more than annoying that people think the problem here is TG and that other people think the solution is some stupid statewide law.  Like an appendectomy to deal with an ingrown toe nail.    Since Loudon, I recall a boy was asked not to use the girl's restroom at a high school by one of the girls.  He, overwhelming her with height and weight,  assaulted her, claiming he had a right to be there.   Later I think eight girls beat him severely in another girl's restroom.  Again the problem is not transgender, the problem is assaults in restrooms and common courtesy.  TG is used as a smokescreen and it seems to paralyze thought among administrators who do not want to do anything to provoke controversy.

Time to get with your Primary Care doctor and be referred to a neurologist or an orthopedist.  It could be many things, too many for any of us here to guess at.

Other than the Boy Scout motto, oath, and law. I use two:   When asked how I'm doing? In all honesty I reply. I would have to make something up to complain. If asked to explain further: I reply. I know someone is having a tougher time than I am, and I pray God blesses them.   I also recite this quote that I have tagged in my signature: Courage, doesn't always roar. Sometimes it's the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, "I will try again tomorrow."-Unknown    Saying these things daily keep me motivated.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

If this goes on, I am conceding the real possibility of being stopped in WM or somewhere by a concerned citizen who tells me, "Lady, God made you female.  I don't think you should be trying to look like a man. You need to return to your true gender and be comfortable living your life out as a woman."   Begin odd and awkward conversation.  I have been thinking about this this morning.

There are many MAGA GOP types who are not transphobes, of course. Some MAGA GOP types are transgender.

I'm hoping to read the next section today.  Many of the reforms they are calling for are good, such as expediting the military procurement process, and have nothing to do with transgender issues.

Good afternoon,    I have a young friend who is vegetarian and married to a full on meat eater. They have two areas of their grill clearly designated for their different cooking requirements. When she’s cooking she uses tongs or chopsticks to handle any meats. When he’s cooking he respects her request not to cook her meals on the side where meat has been. They get along fine and respect each other.    When she attends our house, she usually brings her own food, but knows I will clean my grill to meet her requirements. We love and respect her commitment to be vegetarian. I love that she trusts me to make her comfortable when visiting us. There are ways to make it work.    Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I was going to call it Numbness, then I realised well.. it isn't. basically, yeah, it isn't.   this only happens to me sometimes. I'll be lying down and my legs will.. well, I guess lock?   If I straighten them out, they will unlock- when I roll over again, they will lock again. this lasts for around 10/ 15 minutes I guess   it's not pins and needles either

so, a close friend wants to cook for me   the issue is, she is a vegitarian and won't handle meat- I, on the other hand, won't handle vegetables- hate the things   every time she goes out to the shop, she comes back with something.. a cake, a fruit smoothie, a coffee, I won't eat any of it. please help me think of something that she could make for me that I'll actually eat   disclaimer: you are talking to the most pickiest eater in the world. good luck
