Came out to my mother today

I pretty much had a feeling today's monthly visit I was going to have to finally tell my mom I am transitioning, and even had a bit of the visualizations before I made the trip this morning about worse-case scenarios.

So I told her I had some news, first I told her I finally quit smoking and then segued that into because I will be starting hormone therapy, and so on, and so on...

Without getting too much into the weeds of the possible science of it, I managed to wrap it into the simple reality that it is something I have to do and there's no going back.

Some of it was probably easy to digest based on the fact I had my grey whiskers poking out all over my face due to having electrolysis the day before to let it heal. And the only slightly "femme" thing about me was my new lavender hoodie, which she commented on earlier. So the reality of her son becoming a daughter was still a nebulous concept.

I did mention I had a photo on my phone of me en femme to show her, but I just decided to not push it, as the fact we were actually having an open adult heart to heart dialogue was more than I could ask for. She said she appreciated the fact that she would not have to be suprised and me show up as Stevie one day (which we seemed to agree on as far as name) unannounced.

So after we did our usual shopping, but this time at the thrift, I was able to openly shop for a few cute girl's pants and jacket with her.

Her general message was life is too short to be unhappy or not feel comfortable in your own skin. And as a parent, one has little if any control over how thier child will turn out. Many children and parents disown, and my mother and I had many years under the bridge where we were not in contact, so we are both just happy to have a relationship at all.

A part of me was in awe as I got to see the very essence of who she was as she spoke- one of wisdom, simplicity, optimism and resilience.

Today was yet another demonstration of what I have to believe is the truth of acceptance, joy and peace in this life if I only take the action in helping to create it.

It is lovely to hear of a successful and happy coming-out.  Congratulations to both you and your mother.  It sounds like you both handled it well.

Mom is a legend, I really don't know how I underestimated her. I also have a feeling that timing plays a part, too.

Thanks.

Congrats @stveee!

It is nice that both you and your mom learned and accepted something new about each other.

I still haven't come out to my mom and feel really apprehensive about doing that. More so than coming out to anyone else.

I can only hope it goes as well as it did for you.
