Fashion Questions

How do I present more masculine? I usually just wear exercise shorts and crew necks everywhere, and a big thing I don't want to do is draw attention to my breasts. And I want to be seen as more masculine, but I still like wearing dresses and whenever I think about it I wonder if I'm faking.

My friend (I love her so much) suggested things like flannel and I've been considering cargo shorts (I need some more shorts anyway). I'm also heavily considering a haircut (specifically shaving the sides and back and leaving the top long. I have curly hair and I've tried to short but it's easier and looks better long).

Any other things I can try?

I think cargo shorts might be better, as well as looser clothing.  Jeans that don't emphasize your shape.  An unbuttoned shirt over the T-shirt might help the breasts be less noticeable (depending on the breasts)

When I was living as a guy I didn't put a lot of thought into my clothes, pretty much the same thing all the time, conforming to the weather of course.  Maybe avoid bright colors, IDK.

To be honest, I wasn't much of a fashion icon.

I'm not really one either! :D

Most of the stuff I own is crew necks and graphic tees and exercise shorts. Boot cut jeans seem to be the way to go, and I can definitely try the unbuttoned shirt trick!

Thank you!

@Sol  I think this may be the first time we’ve had an exchange. It’s nice to meet you. One of the best things you can do, is be who you want to be on any given day. Masculine one day and Dressy fem the next. I have a cousin who is as Butch/Lesbian as the name Vic can be. She’s a Master Black Belt in Taekwondo and was an alternant for the USA Olympic Team. She worked as a lineman for the power company and nobody questioned her projected masculinity. Her physical strength or toughness. Then she would show up at a company function looking as girlie and feminine as can be. When we would talk about her clothing options, she would smile and say; “Never let them think they have you figured out.” It’s the best of both worlds. Fortunately women seem to be able to pull this off and not be in jeopardy, plus she could defend herself. Vic and Nancy have been together for 44 years and Married five years ago. Today’s fashion choices for you run the spectrum, if you see something you like, try it.

Best wishes, stay positive, and safe,

@Mmindy, I think I'll try that out!

When I'm dressing in more feminine clothing, it's usually more subtle. No makeup, just some nice shoes and maybe a dress or skirt depending on how I'm feeling. I might even style my hair. Otherwise, I'm more androgynous or masculine.

I could start taking self defense classes, which could be helpful in the long run.

Thank you!

You’re welcome and worth it.

The self defense classes are always worth it too. It a great workout, individual confidence building, and a safe social group. There are also clever ways to minimize your breast, with binders when you want to present more masculine.

You be you,

I know I'm a touch late to the game here but have you considered masculinising makeup?

Link to comment

I have not! Mostly because makeup feels weird and heavy on me and I don't particularly enjoy it. I like to think I have a more masculine face shape, and a more square jaw. But I might try something to define my cheekbones more, see if that'll help any. And I can get my sister to do it, because makeup is a foreign art to me. Thank you for the suggestion, @Ticket For Epic!

I've seen some pretty subtle but strategic usage produce impressive results.   Check around for tutorials perhaps something will appeal.   Good luck!

Leg hair.  Shaving it was a surprisingly big decision.  (Not as big as the beard tho)  After I did it a few times, it's never really grown back.  Haven't shaved them in a couple of years and you'd never know it.  A daughter living with me doesn't shave hers, and she is much furrier than I ever was.     I don't exactly hate my living as a guy in the past.  TBH, I was never quite there anyway.  But I just dropped it.  I live full time fem, and it would bother me a lot to go back to being a guy.  But I don't have to appease family or an employer.

@Loreleiit always sucks getting a ticket for passing a slower vehicle. I'm guessing the police officer was some distance behind you until you performed your passing maneuver. My most costly ticket was from a similar situation, however we were heading out of town and the last straight stretch of road to pass the two slower vehicles ahead of me was still in a 35mph zone. I didn't see the officer behind me and as soon as I pulled out to pass he turned on his lights and siren. Since I was in the process of passing, I figured the next safe place to pull over was at the upcoming roadside park. He didn't accept that and wrote me up for passing two gaps, speed in excess of 15mph over, and failure to stop. He did not care to hear about any fellowship in public safety, and no professional curiosities would be honored.  I did go to court plead my case and the judge, and he did see my point of continuing to pass with the intentions of pulling over safely at the roadside park. He was very familiar with the location. This allowed him to drop the failure to stop charges, but I did have to pay the full 15mph over speeding ticket. So my lesson learned was to never pass when entering or leaving a small town or village.   Hugs, and good luck in court.   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

Marriage complicates things.  We think we know someone… but then we don't. My ex supports me, but we're certainly not married.  She actually took me out for dinner a couple days ago. But if I said I didn't miss her it would be a lie.  That part is still hard. The hard truth is I had to get away from her, to have the freedom to find myself. Maybe it won't be that way for y'all.

Thanks April Marie & Timi for the warm welcome.

Kymmie, it's hard to think of her as an ally when she's still re-posting anti-trans information. On the flip side my wife is supportive of everyone else in the LGBTQIA community, and reluctantly supporting me.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

I'm sorry you and so many others in the military, were assaulted and bullied, just for being who you are. I'm glad that you've seen your old therapist and seem to be better since 2001.   Hugs,   Mindy🌈🐛🏳️‍⚧️🦋

@Sally Stone This is a great thread and resonates with me as well. Please keep it going!   +1 on leg hair. Mine basically stopped growing on its own in my early 30s (cause unknown), but I prefer the look. Was never comfortable with body hair.
