Looking for a therapist and I don't know where to start

I am looking for a therapist -- one of the first things we're told we need to look for when beginning this long process -- and I haven't had much luck so far.

 

years ago when I first began looking into transition, I found a good therapist, but she moved out of town and I dont think the therapist group she was part of even exists any longer. I tried a couple of the online app-centered therapists but their prices are too high (300 per month range) and the local online-only group I was referred to is based out of state and wanted to match me up with a man; I do not feel comfortable talking about this with a man, especially someone who's straight. 

 

I know I need to do something, but I honestly dont know who or where to go to next. It seems as if the world wants me to avoid this altogether.

One place to check is with local universities/colleges.  Some have on-campus health centers with gender-related services. Even if you're not a student, they may keep lists of experienced gender therapists in the area, and be willing to offer that information to you.

 

Good to see that you're actively trying to get going with this. I completely understand your preference for a woman; I had the same preference, not just for my gender therapist but for my PCP and other specialists.  Therapy was one of the most important and useful early steps I took after coming out.

I found a wonderful therapist by looking at Psychology Today. They list therapists in your area and what they specialize in. I found the only LGBTQ therapist within 60 miles and thankfully was only 5 minutes away. 

 

Elsewhere on this forum there is a listing of therapists. At the moment I'm not sure exactly where, but I'm sure one of the wonderful moderators will give you a link.
