Isn't it funny with all of the intellectuals here that no one has even mentioned one of the earliest novelist - Homer!

Oh well, we've all skipped Chaucer in our list too.

Sorry, I'm the child of an English major.

I forgot to list two of my favorites William Sydney Porter and Samuel Langhorne Clemens (O. Henry and Mark Twain)

And George Bernard Shaw.

Love ya,

Sally

I have to say that my favorite all around author is JK. Rowling. She just wrote such an amazing story that so touched so many people that it's hard to not say her.

Jodi Piccoult is my favorite writer though. Her storytelling ends up being mediocre after you find out that all of her books have the same plot, but with different characters - but just the way she writes is figging incredible. Her words just draw you in and leave you wanting to hear them forever.

Terry Goodkind has the best plotline in his series The Sword of Truth. It's just so complex, and just when you think you have everything figured out - BLAM. You don't.

Marcus Zuzak is my favorite storyteller. He took something in the book, The Book Thief that was new and exciting and took a different point of view and just made that book incredible.

Tamora Pierce has some pretty amazing characters that never fail to draw you in and seem lifelike and real.

I have other favorites for different reasons, but these are some incredible writers.

I like Orson Scott Card. His book called Lost Boys (no relation to the movie) is still one of my favorites and the ender's game series especially the last three before the spin offs where so moving and thought provoking.

Other favorites include: Neil Gaiman, Terry Pratchett, Isaac Asimov, George Orwell, and Robert Heinlein.

I'm a fan of a lot of those mentioned, specifically the fantasy fiction authors, but my favorite to date is Stephen Erikson for his "Malazan Tale of the Fallen" series. Very adult material (no, I don't mean pornographic), and he REALLY develops his characters, you can tell he cares about them.

Beyond any doubt, J.R.R. Tolkien (The Lord of the Rings, On Fairy Stories, The Silmarillion) goes on top of my list.

Just next would come Margaret Weiss & Tracy Hickman (Dragonlance), and Michael Ende (The Neverending Story, Momo)

Going further, I could add Isaac Asimov, R.A. Salvatore, Clive Barker, and Karen Wynn Fonstad; but these are authors of some of my favorite works, rather than actual favorite authors.

Ethain

Wow. A tad intimidated by all the literature and American novelist lovers. Lol. But pushing that aside, I'll go with my all time fav, Robert Jordan author of the Wheel of Time Series. Yes, I am a convention going, daydreaming, fantasy loving, Lord of the Rings buff as well. Haha. B)
