Wisconsin Supreme Court Election

Guest

Recommended Posts

Yesterday was going to end up being a groundbreaking and historic day in politics, and not just because Donald Trump was being arrested and arraigned. Yesterday was also election day for the swing seat in the Wisconsin Supreme Court, and the Democratic Party-backed candidate Janet Protasiewicz has soundly won that race.

This is a huge step forward in two ways. First, it will immediately help shore up the basic rights of women, LGBT people, and others in the state of Wisconsin. Second, it means that the votes in Wisconsin will be counted accurately and fairly in the 2024 presidential election, ensuring the Republicans can’t try to steal the state if they end up narrowly losing it.

Can you stand more uplifting news?

"HUGE news! New Jersey Gov. Murphy just signed EO326. This makes it a safe state for trans refugees and providers fleeing other states. NO resources can be used in out of state extradition or investigations. It now joins the safest states for trans people in legal protections."  —Erin Reed  @ErinInTheMorn

One key difference is that Wisconsin's election was statewide, so gerrymandered districts couldn't nullify the urban vote!

What does the victory in Wisconsin mean nationally?
Trump’s turning off independent voters.

"Independents make all the difference. Tuesday’s victory of Judge Janet Protasiewicz — flipping control of the state’s supreme court to liberals for the first time in 15 years — was presumably due to independents who favor abortion rights and oppose the state’s radical gerrymandering. Independents oppose the Republican Party’s stances against abortion, transgender people, gun controls, and the climate. In Wisconsin, where about the same number of voters have registered Democrat as have registered Republican, Trump’s latest rounds of incendiary posts and speeches are reminding independents that he represents everything they most detest about American politics.
"So, as fast as Trump blasts his way to the Republican nomination, he’s turning off independent voters who will be crucial in the general election."
— ROBERT REICH,  APR 6.
