Even In "Safe Communities" Be Careful And Aware

I get my hair color done by a woman who has a Trans sister who is an entertainer and model here in So. Calif. where we are pretty safe compared to the rest of the world it seems, but even so there are incidents by and to our community to be on the lookout for.  "S" (the sister) was at a Wrap Party for an entertainment event she was in, and had someone slip a drug into the single alcoholic drink she was going to have that night.  Luckily or intentionally, "S" was with friends that know her and love her, and they spotted things happening to her from the effects of the loaded alcohol before the effects became super serious.  One of the friends did carry a legal antidote to drug poisoning that she gave "S" as a First Aid measure, and they were ready to get direct medical aid for her.  The site where this happened is Trans friendly and I go there myself for special parties, often enough that one Bartender knows the lime and tonic water WITHOUT any alcohol in it that I drink (I tip extra for the no hassle service on that) but still someone had nasty ideas of "fun".

18 months ago a Trans man friend was not as lucky and was found passed out wedged between a toilet and the wall with a wound in his chest that required medical attention.  He vaguely remembers drinking with one co-worker whom he suspects of drugging him, but cannot prove at the time.  Again, this was at another Club I have also been in for their music and comedy and is Safe for Trans as a whole.  This one did have a down side to it, in that the ER he was taken to would not do a rape-kit test on "A MAN' which at times might be flattering to a Trans Man in a weird way, and since this was in a heavy Gay area, man on man forcible or rape is not a priority with the local police and when they finally took a report at the station two days later, it did not go far.

Moral of these stories, it is not just the H8 groups that cause trouble for us.  Even in places we can normally be safe, there is someone to take the safety too far the wrong way, and  start looking like a bunch of Cis people acting badly toward us. BE WATCHFUL, have friends around you.  Do it all to be safe wherever you are.

Vicky, it's sad that attack on us even in safe places happen.

360° safety, with a wingperson to watch your back is so important.

I'm relieved to here that your hair dresser's sister is okay, and the safety net around her worked.

Great advice, @VickySGV.  You can never hear it often enough.  Being trans and being around liquor and the party scene is bad for ones health and safety.  I've known several people both here and IRL who had close encounters that they later regretted, or almost so.  This is especially true for trans women who are not yet used to attention from men, and get giddy and lose their common sense as well as their inhibitions when some guy turns on the charm.  What those dudes want is not romance; not even close.  So yes, be vigilant, stay close to good friends, stay away from the bar scene, and don't lose your head.  You could lose more than that.

Good advice.  Never go drinking or partying solo.  Preferably drink from sealed bottles that you open yourself.  Never leave your drink unattended...and better to drink soda than alcohol.  Nothing good happens after midnight.

Actually, its good advice for everyone, not just LGBTQ+ folks.  A safe place can be made very unsafe by the wrong person at the wrong place/time.  I found that out the hard way last year.  I thought I was safe on a quick drive to town on a sunny morning.

And even people you know can turn on you.  My GF was drugged a couple of years ago via a tainted drink given by her own sister.  I guess she was trying to get GF to have fun, but it was without consent and way too much.  We nearly lost her.  So if you're with others, it has to be folks who are proven trustworthy and able to make good decisions.

@LadypcnjI'm sorry. I know the feeling my mom thinks I'm going through a phase too although I didn't come out till April 17, 2023, so it was later in life. I was in denial majority of my life. I would love to hear more about this if you are comfortable sharing more of it.

I love fashion. I have over 100 dresses and 74 pairs of shoes. My walk-in closet is full of other clothes as well. I'm getting more shorts soon. SHEIN is awesome for quality and price. Just when you get a leather coat from them it's just the shell not the liner. Most of my shoes are from Torrid because I wear size 13 women's.

Unfortunately Oklahoma is about as bad as Texas but definitely not as bad as Florida. Especially as a minor!

I'm sorry @Ladypcnj I can only sympathize with you on that. Therapist on the other hand is crazy. I have had 16 in 10 years. It sucks having to have to go over things. I will say though after 6 therapists I didn't have to explain my history they simply read the history.

I don't use it.   One of my daughters gave me a little to experiment with, but I haven't.  My youngest tried to put some on me once, but I din't like it.  The light was pretty bad admittedly. My ex didn't use it, and my daughters didn't use it much either when they were still at home.  (If so it was very subtle) And I don't often notice it on women my age (mid 70's)   I shave every day.  But my beard is not heavy, and essentially grey, so it's not real noticeable unless you get close with good light.  I was starting to look into electrolysis, but the pandemic hit, and I just kinda dropped it.   Sometimes I do wonder about it though.

It's something I'm just learning but I find I actually enjoy the 'craft' of it in addition to how it makes me look. Even after a fresh shave, I have a mild 5'clock shadow. For me, the primary use of makeup is to get rid of that. I'll start with the orange concealer over facial hair areas and a bit under my eyes. Liquid foundation over that and light concealer used judiciously over that (still dialing that part in). Then just a tad of powder to bring color back in certain places. There are a number of Youtube tutorials on that layering process.    I'll also pencil in my eyebrows a bit since they're blonde and otherwise not very visible. Sometimes I'll get adventurous and give mascara a try but that's a delicate skill and usually I mess it up. I don't particularly like lipstick, but just ordered a 'lip pencil' to experiment with. Hoping for a more subtle effect.

Sunday is my weekly ablution day - all of the parts that need occasional shaving get their required attention. The weather is rainy and cool today so after the ablutions and shower, I put on blue jeans, a gray t-shirt and a black front-zip hoodie along with gray sneakers.   And, I did put on make-up, not to impress anyone but just to feel as if I'm looking my best....as good as that can be given this woman is now 69 years old.

There are lots of us here willing to offer support, ideas, a shoulder or just a smile. Working with your therapist and finding your true self can be difficult process...but it will also be filled with wonder and joy as you discover that person who's been waiting inside you to be found.   Just know that you are not alone.

Thank you KayC!  I am just trying to keep breathing. I don't have a huge amount of time in my life for self exploration.  My job and responsibilities have me second guessing all my inner work.  I do have time off in the summer - coming up soon as I am a teacher.  Only a few workshops.  Looking forward ward to some introspection.     :) Mealaini
