Invalidating Therapist?

Hi,

 

Anyone have any advice for getting over the trauma of seeing an invalidating therapist (as far as gender issues) in the past? From being told it's just in your imagination to denying who you think you might be (i.e.: trans), etc. Contributed to many years of denial.

I would urge you to find an experienced gender therapist to help you with this trauma.  You can find referrals through a local LGBT center, or on the resource pages of this website.

My current gender therapist and I have touched on the subject, but they mostly encourage me to focus on the present, which is helpful, but does not resolve the trauma, unfortunately. Perhaps in the long term focusing on the present will compound it's healing power.
