This does give me a HMMMMMMM!! moment or six.  I was actually conceived in married student's housing on the campus of West Virginia University back in 1948 when my dad was using his GI Bill for finishing up his BScEng and my mom was a nurse in the Army Nurse Corps working with campus health support for the GI's and families since they were still Military Dependents at that time.  I too have had Cardiovascular and Diabetes II issues, which as recently as two weeks ago are considered to be well under control.  I have not lived my life in West Virginia since both of my parents were from California, (one via Montana) and I was born in this state. 

 

For my own reason, I do see some iffy stuff in this one, the sample size being one of them, the other being a lack of the social environment factors, which as rural are probably fierce since the items studied do go along with addiction to nicotine and food excesses.  The main takeaway really for me it that I fully agree that we need more study of the whole Trans person, one that leads to better community acceptance.

There are all kinds of problems with this study.  The small sample size is one, and the limited geographic area is another.  One can speculate that, if the effect is real, the characteristics of the society in which the person finds themself play a big part in the results.  So it may be that the risk factor is not rural living per se, but living among redneck hillbillies.  Before drawing any conclusions, one would want to study more people in conservative vs. liberal communities.
