Duck, Cover & Hold--- Cans Of Soda Pop Going Off --

Sunday night I was at a Transgender Community Center over in West Hollywood CA doing support work for the Chorus I belong to.  I love the gang that shows up there, and I really  enjoy doing service for our community by being with them.  This past Sunday, things got a little crazy and I am still chuckling about it.

There had been another event at the center the night before that had involved soda's and a variety of munchey foods.  One of the volunteers there had accidentally put 24 cans of carbonated soda pop and 24 bottles of water into THE FREEZER COMPARTMENT of the new refrigerator used for the munchy stuff and had not seen the mistake at the time.  I had been told that my group was welcome to the sodas and to get them from "Fridge to the left".  There was nothing in the refrigerator, but down the hall way, the person talking to me insisted they were there, so I opened the Freezer part on top, and sure enough the sodas were in it, but frozen carbonated drinks become a problem.  I looked at the MESS and said a few nasty words, and just then, one of the tops of a can of Root Beer blew open with a sound like 38 caliber gunfire that actually scared me until I figured out what it had been.   Before I was finished removing the cans from the freezer 4 more cans exploded loudly and messily.  Several cans had actually exploded before I found them and turned the freezer into an ice cave littered with peeled aluminum bodies.  Two other Trans friends had heard the popping cans and since this was a Trans Center and they had been reading and hearing negative news about H8ers they had been more scared for a minute than I was.  They were greatly relieved to find out what the truth was.  I ended up cleaning up the mess in the freezer after removing the 24 solid water bottles to a tub that had some warmer bottles of water in it and got working on the remaining sticky drink syrup in the Freezer.  It was all clean by the time I left, and the chorus members did get their mid-evening munchy time on time, but some of the things I get myself into.

The person who accidentally had put the stuff in the wrong part of the refrigerator was there and came over and sincerely apologized to me about the incident.  I know them and know some special problems they have with attention spans, and Mama (me)  here had to do that job as well to assure them that they were OK and really had done no wrong at the time and that the community still loved them and wanted them with us.

Vicky,

I'm sorry you had a mess to clean up, however the entire time I was reading this images of Steve Martin's character in the movie, 'The Jerk' came to mind. "Oh no more cans! These cans are defective." So other than the unfortunate mess, I hope that the main event went well.

The entire group is one I have worked with for 9 years by now and it is Chosen Family in addition to my adult children.  Some of the younger ones have been thrown out of their DNA family homes.  The event Sunday was just a rehearsal of the Chorus, the night before though it had been a premier / preview of a film made some local Trans people that I did not get to see, but heard was good.

Oh my.  Sudden banging noises are not cool.  At least you knew what it was.  My husband and GF grew up in a bad place, where gunfire wasn't uncommon.  So 4th of July gets interesting when stupid people set off firecrackers at random.  And I get nervous easily, so when loud things happen I'm not the only one hunting for a place to hide.
