Coming Out To My Sister

so, because my sister is getting married next summer, i have had to start thinking seriously about a time line for coming out to my family...

i just made a coffee date with her for wednesday morning... i'm really not sure how it will go... i mean, she is (almost) as liberal as i am, and she is also bi... i don't expect her to be hateful at all, but i do expect her to be very shocked, expecially because when i was closest to her was when i was going through the phase of trying to be femminine... and we haven't really be close for a few years... so she doesn't really know me anymore...

but, this will probably still be one of the easier coming out situations... i have come out to a bunch of gay kids at my college (most didn't take it well, or didn't care at all), my best friend, my lil sis, and two other friends so far... one of which is like a sister, and i'll be coming out to her brother soon also (he is like a brother to me too... and has many gay, and even one trans friend)...

so... yeah. i guess this just helps me to think it though...

i'm not sure at all what i'm going to do with the rest of the family, not to mention extended family and i don't even want to think about how my parents community is going to react..... *sigh*

so yeah, just putting this out there, to get it out of my head.

Good luck Leigh.

Don't ever anticipate what will happen.

My therapist says that you can't decide for them so why put yourself through all of that trying to guess how each will react.

Love ya,

Sally

Leigh - you are one of the most forthright and brave people on this site. I know you have gitters on this, but as Sally says, why worry - you can't know what will happen.

I came out to two gay guys in my family - they are partners, nice people. They didn't have a clue how to react. Coming out to someone gay is like coming out to someone straight, in my experience - NO different.. So that is a strange thing when you consider we are supposedly the "T" in GLBT.

And good luck to ya - you will be fine!

When i came out to my best friend i kinda thought she was bi from knowing her all these years, plus she's a pretty open person, it went kinda how i thought, i told her i was trans, she thought i was gay but it made no difference, then she told me she was bi. Even though she seemed ok at first it took a couple weeks for her to really come around and we are better friends than before.

Good luck Wednesday, hope my story helps.

so, i did it today..i actually came out to two people.

i had coffee with my sister at 10 am, and we just talked about normal stuff for a bit... and then she asked what it was i wanted to tell her, and i started talking about moving, and her wedding next summer, and said i should warn her about something and she said "why, because you might get surgery?"

lol..no kidding, that's what she said... anyway, so again i guess i didn't realize how much people already know.. but she said it's just cuz she's my sister...

anyway, i just told her i'd probably be on T when i come back for her wedding...and we talked a bit.

but since it went so well, i decided to come out to a good friend (he's like a brother to me). and again...not surprised (though he does have lots of gay and at least one trans friends). yeah...so i think this is the end of the REALLY good reactions...though i might have okay reactions later...

i'm just getting ready for the really bad ones (ie parents, etc...)

so. yeah. went well. :)

Good news Leigh,

I have only come out to my wife and I was terrified for days leading up to it.

It was a relief to get it off my chest and I am thinking of telling my mother and possibly sister next. :o

Hugs
