Good Medieval, Middle Ages, History 'based' Movies

I watched that and thought it was ok. I don't think there was enough hot looking guys for me to really enjoy it, though.

If you want hot guys go back a little further and watch the Gladiator movies of the mid 60s - the Italian studios cranked them out like the Spaghetti Westerns that created Clint Eastwood's career.

Each had an American star - usually Steve Reeves the 1948 Mr. America and Mr. World adding the Mr. Universe title in 1950 who inspired Arnold Schwarzenegger, Lou Ferrigno and Sylvester Stallone to begin body building!

Check out Hercules - played by Reeves, Hercules Unchained and he played Hercules again in Jason and the Argonauts.

He was a bit amazing in appearance as you might have guessed but the young Italian supporting cast were selected for looks, not necessarily any innate acting ability - who cared, they were all going to be dubbed into English anyway.

There was a theater near where I lived and a friend and I would go to the movies on Saturday to the double feature, almost always one was a Gladiator movie - The Colossus of Rhodes was a particular favorite because of the effort to match the English words to the lip movements and the dialog became very stiff.

Not the same time frame, but definately hot guys!

Oh, I also saw 300 (idk if that's even considered medieval...?) I actually didn't care for it cuz the effects seemed too fake to be believable, made it cheesy. but i didn't realize first time around that lena headey was in it so I wanna watch it again Most people I've spoken to liked it though. I'm just weird I guess haha.

I had to read the text that movie is based on for a class two years ago, and that film is actually surprisingly accurate, for a movie. I haven't seen the film in awhile, but my recollection is that it left out the whole Greek alliance thing and just made it seem like Sparta were the only ones fighting the Persians. Obviously, basically anything with the special effects, like all the monsters, were added in by the film people.

I enjoyed the movie both times I saw it, actually, because I saw it before I took the class and then I saw it a couple of months ago. It gets a lot more interesting when you're familiar with the historical context of the film, so if you're interested, you could read the text and then see the movie. The text is in Herodotus' Histories. I forget what book in the Histories it is, though.

I watched "The Last King Of Scotland" it was a pretty serious and dark movie by the end, but I think it was worth watching. Not really a history movie I normally watch..not "Medieval" at all but it sucked me in and I couldn't stop watching. lol

you've probably already seen or at least heard this, 300 is a wonderfully done modern movie based on a true event that was even more impressive(i search out anything i can find on this event). it takes place long before the dark ages, yet echoes through history even louder, happy hunting!

I do not know if any one listed this movie, but I do not think I saw it. Kingdom of Heaven is definitely worth checking out. It has Orlando Bloom it it. Its really good, you probably know of it or have seen it.

For the Crusades, I remember seeing on late night TV, a movie starring Rex Harrison as King Richard in the Third Crusade

King Richard and the Crusaders (1954)

I remember it as being very well costumed. Just don't expect a lot of historical fact in any of these - including Kingdom of Heaven which takes some liberties to make the story seem more appealing. They all take some real history and make it seem a lot more interesting and cleaner and neater than it probably ever was.

Thanks! I've been having problems finding older movies(It seems anything below 1990-1980), so I'll look up these and hopefully most of these aren't too old.
